but honestly, most of the stuff iv heard from Africans in America aba akata people or African Americans are 99.99% percent Negative... so definintely some are bound to use the name in a derogatory way even though the real meaning of the word isn derogatory.

Akata doesn mean nigger...i live in the UK but iv got family in the US and theyv always referred to African Americans as akata so I asked them once where the word came from and they said its a Yoruba word for an African American and not a 'nigger'.some people deliberately use it in a derogatory way just to annoy someone who doesn really know wat the term means.

If you go to the websters new world dictionary and search akata, it says derived from the Yoruba people of West Africa and it simply means 'fox'. Hope this helps.

maybe if you ask about the derogatory term kafer or cafer that is used in south africa to describe blacks back in apartheid and even now, then that is the term that is equivalent with the derogatory term of nigger in America but Akata means something else. akata and Nigger are not equivalent words or mean the same thing. My family and me use the word as it's original meaning and have no problem with it

Akata is not and was never a negative word.Black nonafricans were called Akata while whitemen were called Oyibo.It is because AA attitude that made the word akata seem negative.Even in America,if the word "AA male" is spoken near a crime scene,it feels as though the police already have a suspect. Akata means African American, I was born here and my parents call me that all the time.

Its the people who do not know what it mean, tell others its negative. Each culture in Nigeria has a different meaning, so it depends amongst the specific ethnicity within Nigeria.
