I was using the Canon 24-105mm, and it does not compare to real Macro lens by any means. It is a very nice cheap alternative though. I would get a dedicated Macro if you can afford it, but for $50 US you can try the Tube out and see if it works for you, before you make the investment on a Macro lens. Besides, it's a nice tool to have in the camera bag for other lenses that have limited minimum focus distance!!
thanks this was very informative and I like how you showed us live view so we could see how it looked for ourselves! That is what I was hoping someone would show me, so thanks a lot for your video!
@WhiteTrashSingers No, I believe the Kenko extension tubes still allow for metering and autofocus. I think you are thinking of the 7 dollar cheap ones on eBay. Those are manual only.
Some lenses work, but it's often easier to use manual. I like using the 135mm f/2 with a25mm extension tube and autofocus. Perfect for flowers and stuff. more magnification than that though and the depth of field is paper thin.
Hey man which is better. The Canon EF25 II Extension Tube or the Kenko 12+ 20+ 36mm Tubes????
Im using it for my EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM on a 50d body.
I passed on the Canon MP-E 65mm 1-5x for it is only used for macro photography. I'm looking for a close substitute.I chose a lens that can also shoot telephoto. So i opted for a EF 100mm f/2.8L . I just dont know which lens is better. the Canon or the Kenko ext tubes
@oneyedthing The Canon has a slightly better finish than the Kenko, but I would go with the kenko set of 3!! There is no glass in the tubes, just an empty tube.
Good choice on lens!! Can't go wrong with either, but as you said the EF 100 is alos a killer Prime.
Great response. I already decided to get the Kenko but then I saw the Phottix ext tubes 12 + 21 + 31 which is little cheaper than the kenko ones :\. Whaddya think?
Kool video, i bought a +4 filter by Hoya which helped get closer but no where near as good as your extension tube :( does it auto focus too or do you have to manually focus?
Thank you Thank you at last by watching your video I can now say the £10 i payed for it was well worth it as im now using it, lol only took a year to work out lol
Ummmmm, I'm not sure what you mean by Reverse your lens? Your lens can only mount to the camera 1 way. Same with the extension tube. The only way to get more magnification and/or get closer to your subjects than what the standard lens can do, is by adding extension tubes. That will allow you to both focus closer, and get higher magnification on your Macro subjects.
@worm3245 Reverse mount rings. You can even mount lenses filter thread to filter thread, like a 50mm with a 70-300 mounted on it. I've tried it, but honestly, I prefer a bellows or several extension tubes. It's less cumbersome and you don't have to get the additional back mount to add a filter thread (mostly for protection) to the back of your lens.
@worm3245 I believe to how ever was saying reversing the lens..they make 52mm lens reverse were it attachs to your camera lens mount, then screw the lens on that mount to your filter screw...
Now with these tubes you should get all 3 tubes and you connect them together and get even closer, if you want depth of field in your pictures, get a cheap lens or use a lens that has the aperture ring on it and adjust it manually.. That will make a world of difference..nice video, I shoot Nikon D7000's
Excellent video Jason... I have got a Tamron 90mm macro, however i cannot get closer as much as i would like as it doesnt focus after a certain distance... do you suggest using an extension tube to get closer and get extreme close up??
Thanks :) And Yes I would recommend trying some extions tubes! You will get an even shallower depth of field though, so you most likely need to focus stack. Be sure to check out that video!!
@asiboy29 in macro photography most people just set the required focus distance on the lens (normally right down to the minimum) then move the camera back and forth to get the shot in focus, when you master this technique youl find it far more accurate than trying to rely on auto focus.
Thanks for all the comments everybody !! ;)

Nice video. Q: which option would you recommend for "cheap macro"? The 100mm lens or 50-255mm Canon is good enough? thanks
