I may be wrong and someone can correct me but Bonnie is a Scottish term for a girl. I believe same as a 'Lassie'. May also be used in the UK and possible Ireland.

My Dad loved this song.He sang it all the time. He would have been 113 yrs old if he was alive today. He always whistled it or sang it. He has been dead for 28 years and I still remember him singing it like it was yesterday! Thanks for posting this!
