  • I think The Cure would have been my favorite band if they continued on with this sound and image. This is a lot more appealing to me then their later work.

  • Love the drumming...

  • Smith I love YOU!

  • shit you know, Lol was a decent punk drummer during "killing an Arab", everyone bashed him so bad in the book ten imaginary years, but he's really pretty good on the skins, better than ringo at least

  • I think they were like 12 here

  • Los pelos como escarpias. Gracias por compartir el video en You tube. Es uno de los primeros temas que conocí de los Cure.

    Saludos. )

  • Haha, "Tochurst". Is this the first recorded footage of them?

  • postpunk Cure was awesome.

  • Aha!

  • Sure sounds like, come as you are, by - Nirvana

  • I can't stop listening to this....good shit!!

  • it's funny but three imaginary boys sort of has a grunge sound to it like Nirvana sort of...thumbs up if ya agree!

  • Is it just me, or do they play this version a bit faster ??!

  • @FuckZEduck seems like this version is way better than the studio version for sure probably cause it's faster lol!!!

  • I can hear a similarity to the sound that will develop into the Drowning Man.

Appropriately they play a song that pays homage to the French literary influences.

    Great presentation. Thanks.

  • daaaamn... robert was hot xD

  • J'etais à ce concert, j'avais 17 ans , le choc !!!

  • great guitar playing on killing an arab, they were a pretty tight trio

  • I think this is the first video I've ever seen live where Lol is playing drums, great upload

  • They remind a lot of Wire in this vid. Seems like were much tighter in the early days. This song also comes off a lot better live than in the studio version.

  • Off to see their 'reflections' gig in Sydney in less than 24 hours. Been a fan since these songs were new. Thanks for a great post of a great band in blistering form. Now I'm really bloody excited. Nice one. .

  • So young!!!

  • its weird to see robert smith without his normal look...

  • I saw this many many times but it's the first time I noticed the keyboard sounds during Killing an Arab.

  • The Cure are hilariously clean-cut here in 1979. They just look like normal kids at this point. This must be before MTV ruined music by trying to make musicians into models. Of course, the Cure just adapted and were still great even during all the MTV ridiculousness.

  • omg that bass line on Killing An Arab is soooo great!

  • Great Vid Great track

  • The Cure played a concert at Le Bataclan (Paris) on the 17th of december 1979 BUT this video is taken from their appearance at the Theatre de l'Empire (Paris) for Chorus TV program on the 8th of december 1979.

  • INCREDIBLE

  • Oh how I love this!!! This is so amazing!! I so love seeing early footage of The Cure!! It takes me back for sure!! This song is just such an awesome song!! It just rocks!! The Cure is truly amazing and so very awesome!! A band all their own!! Always loved them, always will!! The Cure forever and always!! :) ♥

  • Great one!

  • Very Nice Find !! THX for posting !!!

  • This video is AWESOME!!!!!

  • It's crazy how early his signature sounding voice developed.

It's like its maturity was established from early on.

  • Whoa! What quality, what a band, Everybody is locked in as usual. Smith at the controls.

  • I LOVE 'Killing an Arab' fast like that!

  • I cant figure out how can Robert Smith fired Laurence (the drummer and then the keyboarder) After all they started the band together!

  • Fantastic classic! Better then the album version :)

  • @Mo0kSylar I started to like this song after I heard the live version from the Concert album... Alive is amazing! This version is even better than the one from Concert!

  • Audio quality is really good. You can tell the cameras with the light and color bleeding were of sub broadcast quality. If it wasn't for the great audio track I would swear I shot this with my old betacam.

  • love the end electric beats there - "pew, pew, pewwww!"

  • simon looks so french. its great.

  • Were they late for dinner or something? It's like in triple time. lol

  • I love it

  • Fuckin' great & supercool!

  • sleep sweet child the moon will change your mind

  • Faaaantastic quality! Thanks for sharing :)

  • This is great , from when the Cure were good.

  • cette chanson m'avait procuré malaise et joie, tour à tour.

  • oh man. thx for this upload. great

  • The Cure- the only band I've been a true "fan" of in my whole life. Their music is the soundtrack of my childhodd and youth.

  • hahaahahhaahhaah ''three imaginary boys toC????hurst dempsey / smith'' ..... major mistake

  • One of my fav songs killing an Arab (from the book the stranger by Camus) one of my fave writers too =) THANKS FOR SHARED THIS VIDEO WITH US!!!

  • Gallup rocks this MFer

  • non male per dei ventenni!!!

  • What kind of guitar is that he´s using? Fender Jaguar?

  • Ohhh.... these guys were one of my fantasy high school crushes!!! This video is so great.

  • ha ha you must be old!

  • early cure is cool!! what CD can you get this stuff on?

  • Try the record three imaginary boys :-)

  • get three imaginary boys Deuluxe edition

  • Three Imaginary Boys or the US version, Boys Don't Cry

  • superb performance & sound

  • This is really great!

  • When I bought their Boys Don't Cry album (didn't buy Three Imaginary Boys as BDC has better songs on it e.g Jumping Someone Else's Train)

I didn't know the original album version of this song but this live one here and thought it was more or less similar. I wasn't disappointed but I thought it was a pity as I really love this Three Imaginary Boys performance, it's my favourite out of all of them!

  • Laurence "Lol" Tolhurst

  • tochurst?

  • Three Imaginary Boys (I was talking about)

  • I Just found this version and it's so much better than the original versions. Way more up-tempo, really addicted to this at the moment... thx for posting!

  • I think that The Cure was really awesome in this era, when they were 3 piece band, and when Bob smith didnt wear his hair long and he looked normal like a dude instead of a dude in drag.

  • Totally agree. The Cure sounded much better in the punk era before they became too commercial. Much prefer the raw punky version of the Cure than the pop version. Their early stuff was ten times better. Robert Smith was far better looking as well.

  • stupenda....

  • It's like travelling back in time. Utterly amazing.

  • AMAZING

  • Love how Rob flails that thing on Killing....this whole thing is CLASSIC!

  • Wow, amazing quality, too bad Simon's bass solo didn't get the cameraman's attention!

  • TALENT

    TALENTO

  • He was just 20 here

  • coooool

  • Brilliant...And GREAT Quality. THANK YOU.

  • so soooooo good.

  • Lot faster than the record . I saw The Cure in 1980 on their first tour of the USA at a club ib NYC called Hurrah's . Mesmerizing .

  • Had the same Fender guitar , too .

  • fuckin A

  • FANTASTIC

The Cure always ment something mysterious and dark to me.. Love it..

  • Cure dans leur meilleur époque, 79/82 : brus, sans comprmois ... superbe

avant les frasques et leur mondialisation/commercialisation

  • its hard to recognize Robert without the makeup and the crazy hairdo..

  • nice vid, very good live, ofcourse a bit faster!

    Thanks for the upload!

  • Much quicker version than the one they started to perform some years afterwards. Robert has turned this song in a more introspective one.

  • Thanks Killerpunk for share, this is really good!!!! I wish The Cure comeback to be what it just to be

  • Aww, he look so sweet n_n <3 <3 <3

  • Thanks killerPunk this is great quality!! I love both of these songs. Just recently I saw a version of Killing an Arab with the words changed to "killing a stranger" In the book "The Stranger" it is largely irrelevant that he kills as arab but given the song is based on the book it is a detail very relevant to the song. HOw will new listeners understand that the song is about Camus?Educate rather than change and hide the lyrics!!!Where they forced to change the lyrics? Can someone explain?

  • because Robert is not the one he used to be. now he has sold himself to a younger -idiot- audience. just go to the official forum and read all the stupid posts there: "how cute is simon", "robert lipstick color", etc pathetic!

the decision to change THAT word is because he doesn;t want problems of any kind. now he is too bland that sucks! their drummer is the worst in rock history and bob stills keeps him in the band. that's unbelievable too. the cure died when boris williams left the band.

  • Political correctness. The song had nothing to do w/ killing actual Arabs/Muslims to begin with, as it was based on Camus' "The Stranger", but in today's PC climate, Robert apparently thought it best to, uh, "soften" the lyrics. Personally, I don't think he should have caved in, but what do I know.

  • I knew discographs told him to do so.

  • Wow! killer punk indeed. Thanks. Loved them back then. First album rocked.

  • What a surprise ! very good video ! good sound ! So funny !

    TXS

  • Smith, Dempsey y Tolhurst , esa fórmula perfecta. Sorprende la calidad del video. De dónde mierda lo sacaron? Graciasssss

  • Great Video! One Of The More Rare Ones, And Its A Good Performance!

  • I've just checked out "The Stranger" by Albert Camus from the Library last night. Hopefully after I'm done reading, I will become an even bigger fan of the song "Killing an Arab".

  • thats simon gallup at bass, not michael dempsey, this might be 1980 or 1981.

  • Nah, the place is the Bataclan in Paris, France and the date is December 17, 1979. Gallup and Hartley officially joined The Cure in November 1979.

  • Sorry -Just checked my old videos and the date is actually November 16, 1979 at the Theatre de l'Empire, a show that was actually set up for French national television. Between 1979 and 1987 France was The Cure's 2nd biggest 'market', they'd do a lot of gigs and promo stuff there.

  • Now if you compare this version of "Killing an Arab" with what they feed us with today... they suck these days. This version is so full of energy and passion!

  • great three imaginary boys

  • Great vid and great quality! Thanks for posting this

  • Does this gig alos exist on CD or LP ?

  • And Rob is so fucking good player

  • yeah,it's hard to believe he was only 21 or so at the time.his musical talent was and still is mind blowing.

  • Totally THE CLASH look !!!

  • Дааа !! Удивительная чистота звука и голоса ! Классный концерт, действительно не скажешь что это 1979 год =)

  • Daaa]!! Surprising cleanliness of sound and voice! Class concert, actually you will not say that this 1979 =)

  • it's hard to believe it was in 1979, they look like they came from the future :D

  • Amazing quality for such an old video! And i love the live versions of the songs. NICE!

  • I especially like their Dark early years!! Great Vid, Thx for posting!!!

Nothing like quality music from the Cure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!mmmmmmmmmm ^.^

  • I agree, great video!!

  • so neat thanks.. I really liked em in the 80', saw robert smith w siouxie in 83 that's it

    great memories dark 80's

  • lol a Simon's outfit... and lol's hair.. but still great

  • HOLY CRAP!!!

  • incredible quality but where is it in Paris .The olympia? The Gibus ?SOON

  • This is incredible quality!, where did you get this?, Is there any dvd with this?, thanks in advance

  • This was caught on TV, a french rock program called "Chorus" made by Antoine De Caunes (the guy who made Rapido later) in 79/80. This channel made a re-broadcasting that time, there's nothing more to see...

  • I love all Cure... but early Cure is the best. :-)

  • Wow, i've never heard early Cure music, this is great! A little pop-punky, not like their later stuff

  • You really should try early Cure, yes ;)

  • Really good music, you can hear the coming style shine through...Im longing back to the youth!! My good where did the years go!!??

  • Still babes in arms here..so young! Amazing, rare, early footage.

  • el del bajo es SIMON

  • Dempsey's bass solo gets missed by the clueless camera man

  • The bass player's is totally missed by laynenmru cos its Gallup

  • any fool can tell that that is SIMON!!
