Fantastic overview of the 8 Voice from the mystical past of synthesiser mythology. This makes a good video tutorial too. Tom's new Son Of Four looks even more tempting. There is just something about the imperfections between voices on these older machines that adds an X Factor into the character of the sounds.
Thanks for sharing your engaging look at this rare beast. I owned a 4-voice until several years ago and listening to your stacks brought back all the things I loved about it. I really liked the layered track at the end, your 'live' sequencing another layer of analogue in itself.
Man herbie Hancock back in the 70s to early 80s use to make some complex difficult out of this world, spacey deep scary wonderful beautiful tears of joy, taking many breaths away type of sound on the oberheim poly 8 voice. I remember his sounds on the sunlight albums and others, he had the white beast synth in there with the multi sound brass patch that was panned individually. Still this day I want one, now I can get tom oberheim new on (son of 4 voice) and stack an extra for 8!!!! Great demo
I used to own a 4 voice and it was obvious playing it as a polyphonic synth with all the SEM's exactly the same was missing the point, yes the modulations options are very limited, but because you can program each SEM individually you can create sounds not possible on any other polysynth, and the multimode filters are fantastic, the overall sound is probably the best or one of the best I have heard along with the CS80 & PS3200 which both have 12dB filters.
11:45 rules the cosmos. Awesome demo, thanks so much. Whoa...14:10 too... One thing I've always like about the SEM based synths was the plain black and white color scheme. Very cool swell at 17:13.
Absolutely Superb presentation of this amazing instrument. This and an ARP 2600 changed my course in music and sound. Thank You for putting this together. Inspiring!
I absolutely love these old synthesizers, for the very reasons that you have just described. And it frustrates me to no end when people don't understand the point of old synthesizers is to not have a "perfect" sound, but to embrace the imperfections and use those imperfections to make some truly interesting sounds.
Massive! By now the most enjoyable 17:23 min of the year. Only playing the real thing can better this.

Is a 8vs a 4vs with an expansion module or is the keyboard section different?

Very good and informative video. Too many synth videos are pointless noodling without always having very good sounds nether.

Really surprising how powerful this old dinosaur is, and still how alive. Now if I only had $10,000 lying around...

The sound on 8:22 really blew my mind!!!!! I really love this synth. With this synth you can do things you couldn't do on other synth's.

Great video. In the days of minimal presets, I used to do synth programming at studios for the 4-voice, CS80 and Prophet 5.

Another very famous user of this synth was Joe Zawinul.
Listen to Heavy Weather by Weather Report, or type in Weather Report Rockpalast.
