If only she would have hit this at worlds!! She could have won the gold in event finals. Just think she was US champion. Rebecca Bross had the highest floor score at Worlds and Allie finished fourth in EF finals. Maddie way outscored both of them at Nationals. Stunning dance + Beautiful choreography= great performance:)
I agree with the hair comment. I was a high performance gymnast (olympic level) for canada and I never had hair like that. My coach would have killed me.
wel i know some girls who if they have their hia rin a pony tail when they tumblr or d bars it doesnt stay in, so sometimes they put it in a bun., that can be messy
I love Mattie! (Especially on floor) She is a graceful and beautiful dancer and is a powerful tumbler! Did you see her first pass??? I take her as such a bad ass and there is NOTHING wrong with that. I also find that Chellsie Memmel and Alicia Sacramone are pretty bad ass well. I love her style, her music, and her hair. Her style is so unorthodox and is a good change from the cookie cutter gymnast. Wonderful exercise.
I get tired of people responding to criticism by saying "well let's see if YOU could do this routine!" - that's a weak argument. If something is crap, you don't have to be a professional athlete to call it crap. (Not that I feel this routine was crap, of course) I just wish people would quit saying that.
wow she's brilliant. I wish i could be so good like her. Living in Germany, wow, which amazing performence. Wow, respect. I hope I coul become like her. Pretty and fantastic!
I really like her style...once she gets some experience she can be a powerhouse...I just don't like this music for her...Im not sure why..just don't like it but she can do some great stuff
@whatupblaisex3 Completely agree with that. I coach gymnastics and my last team girls would come to a meet and they looked like they just crawled out of bed!
Maybe her dance isn't the best ever, but it certainly is the best in the US right now. Her execution was almost perfect and her tumbling was great, not at the cost of her dance. I think she's wonderful.
personally , I think she needs more flexibility . you see it when she does the split on the floor she can barely bend back . if she had that amazing flexibility like we see in Nastia combined with her amazing dance and tumbling ability we'd be looking at a threat to Rebecca Bross in my opinion because the main thing lacking here is leaps for me
...which is not to reduce anything from Mattie. I'll admit this is one of the few FX routines that doesn't make me want to skip through to just the tumbling passes. Excellent choreo. Same tumbling level we've been seeing since ca. 2000, but completed very well.
XXJules44x is totally correct. It's funny how many times we've seen this, with gymnasts like Courtney McCool, who are overtly over-scored simply because their routines are so comparatively exceptional (when it comes to dance & presentation) in a domestic competition.
I also laugh every time Elfi uses her good ole euphemism to describe the situation: "She has an international style! The judges love it!"...tacitly recognizing that the American style is synonymous with bad dance.
I am kind of with you KV..it has just been a while since fans and even the NBC announcers have seen a routine like Mattie's so people think it is better than it actually is. American gymnasts are not particularly graceful so when one comes along that is it's a BIG DEAL..that being said, in my opinion the routine is good, not spectacular, and she should do well at worlds with it.
@xxjules44xx I definatley see where your coming from, since definatley since Nastia we haven't seen anything graceful from any of the American's...I think it will do well in Worlds for the US too. I definatley appreciate your reasonable, and understandable explanation.
@bandrunner86 Oh and when did I ever criticize anybody in this conversation. I haven't even criticized you, I just wanted to voice my opinion about the routine and share thoughts with other fans and maybe they disagree with my opinion and I guess that's ok. Oh and I won't shut up under your command, sorry. I never said Mattie Larson has no talent whatsoever, I'm just saying I actually didn't like the routine compared to most people. What a randomly harsh reaction.
@bandrunner86 I never said I could go out there and do it could I I'm just tired of NBC saying that her floor routine is like the best floor routine ever. Did you also not get my last comment where I said she was "Ok" She's just not my favorite. Quote "Everyone is entitled to their own personal beliefs, that's what makes gymnastics such a wonderful sport." (bandrunner86). Sounds a bit ironic that in the next sentence you said to stop criticizing other gymnasts and their fans. Hmmm...
Mattie's floor routine is beautiful..but it only stands out among the other top US gymnasts because most of them (Bross, Hunter, Raisman) have no dance ability whatsoever. I am excited to see how Mattie's routine will fare at World's against other gymnasts who have graceful dance and difficult tumbling.
@puggle09 I know! She has a double layout ok then 3 iffy tumbles...the US judges are very biased, they give Kytra who I'm pretty sure has a much higher start value then Larson a 14.8...and is it just me or was this one of the most boring routines of gymnastics.
@sqekcx I know people that was a stupid question...but compared to alot of other gymnast I personally thought it was the most boring routine of today's gymnastics
@sqekcx You asked for it...Well in at least the U.S. Kytra Hunter's, Bridget Sloan's and possibly even Rebecca's all out Italian routine. In Europe (since I haven't been keeping track of China), Ksenia Semenova's by far, Anna Myzdrikova's, Aliya Mustafina's routine, Ksenia Afanasyeva's, Ariella Kaeslin, Beth Tweddle (and I nearly hate her), Youna Dufournet's, Vanessa Ferrari's, and maybe even in Brazil Jade Barbosa's. I'm sure there's more but I'm only allowed so many characters.
@sqekcx Well don't get me wrong on the Double Layout that was great, but the Triple was sloppy, and the double pike was low. But the real scary thing was the 2.5 to front layout she saved it extremley well because it looked like she could've gone down on the 2.5 let alone do a front layout out of it. I mostly like the Russian's floor routines and just mentioned a few other gymnast with cool routines.
well I can't see how her triple twist was sloppy. It was high, clean, the landing was precise. Myzdrikova's and Afanasyeva's triples are WAY more sloppier. And the double pike here wasn't low at all, and she stuck it.
@sqekcx Ok her Triple is better then Afanasyeva's and Myzdrikova has a Back Tuck to worry about. But on her double pike she landed with her chest down. I guess it's my personal preference of not having a way to classical routine. I think Mustafina's NEW routine is extremley boring as well.
@KVHolland3 Viktoria Komova and Chellsie Memmel in 2008 Olympic Trials no how to stick a double pike. It's hard to land a double pike with the chest not down but Mattie had it a bit to much.
That was her score on bars --- which was totally deserved. If you have high difficulty then bars is the easiest event to score high on. Beths was 6.8.
@TwisterFlipp95 Ok I'm sorry I completley got the scores wrong...I just remembered watching on TV that MAttie Larson scored way higher then Kytra. Tweddle got 14.825 at euros in floor. I personally thought that Larson's was boring compared to everyone else. (Which is saying a lot.) I guess I haven't liked most US gymnast since the end of the Olympics. I just got tired of my own countries reporters putting down all the other international gymnast. I guess Larson had an ok routine.
THAT FULL WAS EPIC!!!

I think that she's an unique gymnast. The hair shouldn't matter, it makes her stand out. Cookie cutter gymnasts aren't always what's ideal.
