  • Comment removed

  • 5:32 Sounds like king bee's "back by dope demand" but slowed down. Perhaps they sampled it too x3

  • Just realized the drum sample at 5:32 was also used in "Scarlet Begonias" by Sublime. Great sample, great song, great all around. :)

  • 5:32 - bomb sample

  • 4 people aren't funky and can't play drums xD

  • Open up a dictionary. Look up "soul" or "feeling." They will both say: 'see "Funky Drummer" by James Brown.'

  • This tune is a lesson in feel.

  • EEHHN

  • @qpqb Wrong, the Amen Break is the most influential 6 second clip in musical history.

  • @tHickman95 yea sure but im talking about the 5:36 drumming beat DJ's, public enemy,Dr. Dre, even Jay-Z have sampled the beat watch Copyright Criminals

  • @qpqb True, but the Amen Break started an entire subculture, and is continuing to be used prolifically today, as opposed to just being sampled in a few old rap songs.

  • @tHickman95 yea i mean both of them r great beats to sample i mean the amen break was used to make the powerpuff girls theme song and the the funky drummer lots of music schools in america teach that rythem both of the beats r just legendary

  • @qpqb u forgot LL Cool J

and even to this day... it's 'STILL GOOD'

  • The universal BEAT of the century!!!

  • Anyone care to guess who's playing bass on this funk classic?

  • @gmandofgod "Bootsy" collins?

  • @raddicks1 Nope! It's actually "Sweet" Charles Sherrell. Good guess though...

  • @gmandofgod Sweet Charles Jarsherrell?

  • This cut was IT!...My buddy and I called ourselves "Slink and Slank" and we took our JB 45's with us at the parties...it didn't jump until we got there...There was no house party without JB...A teen in the 60s was awesome!!!!

  • @TheeAldeen Somebody needs a hug... haha!

  • Dude. I love this song. The part I love most in this clip is during the 5:34-5:54 mark. Good beat. A beat like that is good for playin' basketball and makin' all the dunk shots. Two thumbs way up on that one!

  • Call the law. Call the LAW! Can't stop it. Too good.

  • 3 clueless idiots should get off the planet!!!

  • James Brown RIP

    True LEGEND!

  • YES JAMES. It is still good. Better than good to say the least.

  • The reason this was sampled so much and Im referencing the drum track it because it was funky and consisitent and the drummer sound like a drum machine. Some funky ass Shut your mouth

  • @miknice59 SHUT YOUR FUNKY ASS UP!!

  • @Dactuck Sorry for my obvious aggression. Enjoy the music. Bring Home the Juice!

  • funk is the shit!

  • On my worst day, this makes me feel great!

  • When James began the countdown at the 5:32, I don't think he nor Clyde and the rest of the band had an idea the impact they would have on a generation and a whole new genre of music. The 5:32 mark is VERY significant.

  • @DarkHalo08 Well said!!!

  • ファンキー! I like the music! Ich liebe der musik! 我愛之楽曲也! from North korea.

  • Even from the beginning you can hear the break coming cause your so familiar with the sound.

  • @itzillmatic I hear you. The fascinating aspect is this was made at least 30 years ago. It hits now!

  • @Dactuck 41 years ago actually...and yes, it hits now as it always did!

  • @quirpco You're right. 1969. Bring Home THE JUICE!

  • lord finesse vs percie p battle

  • the drum break was later used in the powerpuff girls intro

  • james brown give me some drugs i like it make me go weepopbookalee

  • RIP James Brown :)

  • When that drum break hits air drumming is in order.

  • James Brown is the most sampled man in history. The break at 5:35 is FUNKY!

  • Clyde Stubblefield, the funkiest drummer ever;

  • 5:35 "Let Me Ride!"

  • ...aint it funky?

  • @leftinashes YEAAA YEAAAAAH

  • The funky drummer..

  • Infinite respect to Clyde Stubblefield. He's the one responsible for the legendary break. That man REALLY needs to be recognized.

  • The drum break of "Funky Drummer" is very similar to the Winston's "Amen Brother," for those who don't know. These are both historically significant breaks. Whether you like hip-hop, pop, or drum and bass.

  • Fucking hell... That drum break is orgasmic :) AND I'M A METAL DRUMMER lol

  • who is playing guitar on this?

  • @TimboBumaye jimmy nolen

  • were i come from this music isn't popular but i love it . were i come from people be listening to crap like chris brown , Katey perry ,and lady gaga .i sometimes ask strangers' why do you like that type of music. listen to real music like led zeppelin and bob marley .

  • @quagsiremango Chris Brown can at least sing, Lady Gaga is so unique she is excused\ Katey Perry, is a product for profit. This music originated from a people of struggle\ hard times.....artist like James Brown and Bob Marley had not much more than their individual expression as relief from their harsh conditions. I am willing to bet Katey Perry does not spend even a third of the time developing a song as would Brown or Marley. I could be wrong but I bet I am right.

  • Yes, sir. I remember growing up in the Bronx when the DJ's would take two LP's of this groove, and cut back and forth smack dab at that all too funky break and keep that thump magic going for what seemed to be forever while the MC's (now called Rappper's did they thang). This was before someone got the bright idea to go to the studio and record it. They called them "Block Party's back then! Right on people, let it all hang out!!!!! DJ Galaxy where you at?????

  • Classic!

  • 5:30

  • who is da god of hip hop: rakim or james brown?

  • @rakimkoolgrapwutang James is already the godfather of soul. You can only be the godfather of one style of music. haha. Rakim is awesome but I'd have to say Grandmaster Flash probably for the godfather of hip hop.

  • @peakrider74 dj kool herc basicly invented hip hop. wat bout him

  • @rakimkoolgrapwutang There are many godfathers or gods of hip hop. Its all preference I guess. I heard Grandmaster Flash as a kid. He was a groundbreaking dj and he could rhyme like no other.

  • Mr. James Brown has no rival on these fields... he was ages ahead of his time ♪!

  • GET UPP A !!!

  • @sultanhorny stay on the scene

  • I was about to buy the whole LP with this on just for the like 10 second drum break aha

  • James Brown = God.

  • 3 people don't know that history was made at 5:35 !

  • @Ak3r0n You ain't NEVER lied, son...

  • @Ak3r0n- Yes... one of Hip Hop's top three 808 break beats!!! Stetsasonic wore this out on Sally!

  • @Ak3r0n So true!

  • Clyde Stubblefield. The greatest funk drummer on the planet!

  • JESAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSS!!!! What a tune this is!!!!!

  • Madonna "Justify my love2 at 5:35 !!

  • for some reason I REALLY want to eat a pumpkin right now...

  • @TaffyRaphie Wow... I thought I was the first on this thread to post about a pumpkin... haha! you can take the credit! love that part!

  • Maaannn. I got goose bumps @5:35!!! Hip hop made that one of the most popular Break beats of all time!

  • THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS FUNKY GEM!!!!! BUT PLEASE PLEASE GIVE ME THE CORRECT INFO AS TO WHERE I CAN GET THAT PICTURE I MUST MUST HAVE IT, IT DESCRIBES MY FATHER AND MYSELF TO THE "T" "POPPA NOR DAUGHTER DON'T TAKE NO MESS" KEEP IT TIGHT!!!!!!!

  • Prince has done this poise. He pays homage to the Godfather of Soul.

  • far out man im high right. and i was searching for a funcky drummer and i usually like heavy metal -jimi hendrix man. and i gotta says this music blows my mind man

  • amazing ; they were in the studio just messing around and came up with a classic. present day "producers" and "artists" take note

  • Uh. Wow. Let the King speak.

  • Happy 68th birthday to MISTER CLYDE STUBBLEFIELD (ALL CAPS when you spell the man's name). His drumming will live on in perpetuity, especially his "Funky Drummer" loop.

His appearance last month playing with The Roots while backing Chuck D on "Fight The Power" on Jimmy Fallon shows he's as constant as the Northern Star, and as funky a drummer as there ever was!

  • 1000 YEARS FROM NOW JAMES WILL STILL BE 100 YEARS AHEAD OF EVERYBODY soul from a heart beat expressed thru a finger tip... This is RAP music fucx wacka flack

  • classic break 5:35 ! LOVE IT!

  • Clyde Stubblefield's drum solo in this tune was the most sampled drum clip of all times. The guy himself is now 67 and was never credited in any of the productions where his drumming was used. I just read this on a forum...

  • Who had the worlds most sampled drum beat? James Brown's "Funky Drummer" or The Winstons' "Amen, Brother" ?

  • James Brown = one of the exceedingly small number of human beings to have visited this planet about whom it is very difficult to talk about in any meaningful sense -> correctly called the Godfather Of Soul

  • In this recording of 7:02 minutes, the past, present and future of the 21st century

    music can be heard:jazz,soul,hip-hop,blues,funk,everything.

    This is magic.

  • 50 Years later and it's still good.

  • sweet baby jesus, im overdosing on funk just listening to this!

  • The picture defines Badassery

  • Sveriges,,,I would have to agree with you,,,I think its the most famous and used sample in History,,,,something about that break beat that gets to me,,,James Brown get the credit,,but it should go to his drummer,,i bet that mofo broke some dam drumsticks puttin that beat down

  • real funky

  • That one punk who disliked doesn't like true music

  • Clyde Stubblefield made the drum machine necessary. Too good. With all respects to Buddy Rich.

  • Man. I just love this

  • Thanks for posting this stroke of musical genius.

  • Rob Swift took JB to a whole new level - look up Rob if you don't know

  • @lulem400 Whats the name of anything he used sampling james? I hope its drumstep XD

  • the man who invented EVERYTHING.

  • @sayyes2bull Heck no, far from that. He was but one of the first to get enough things together to reach a White audience.

  • @Lioyd1rving you can be in charge of all that. i know what i said, and i was there, baby. there were many, before, and many came after. but, james brown was the most original act i ever saw-black, white, or purple microdot audience.

  • @sayyes2bull Nothing is completely invented in music. Funk has roots in blues, which has roots in rock, which has roots in negro spirituals (actual historical term), and so on. It's undeniable that Brown wasn't the first to put together and fuse things together in such an original way; he was merely the first to achieve success through it.

  • @Lioyd1rving i'm afraid you've confused me with somebody who wanted to have a conversation, just because i made a comment about an artist. he, also, really isn't the 'prime minster of funk' or 'king james' , but i don't see you givin' history lessons to anybody else. relax, whoever you are. you go ahead with all your stats and such. i ain't interested. just so you know, i was being factitious. it's not a world shattering comment.

here...james brown didn't invent ANYTHING. now, you feel better?

  • @sayyes2bull It is merely a remainder not to let coolness get in the way of actually getting it right.

  • @Lioyd1rving listen buddy, i don't need any 'remainders', ok? i'll say whatever in the hell i want to say and i'll say it whenever i want to and i won't ask some troll if it's ok. got it?

  • @sayyes2bull A troll would do it to piss you off for kicks.

  • @Lioyd1rving yeah, and most of them know how to spell reminder. my bad for giving you too much credit. you're probably just an idiot.

  • @sayyes2bull In other news, there is no difference whatsoever between spelling one word wrong and foking ap zi antyer santns.

  • THE PRIME MINISTER OF FUNK

  • King James. Royalty.

  • feel the beat

  • Fuckin LOVE that drum break, just makes me wanna explode....

  • "The name of this song...is the funky Drummer!" :)

  • Favourited!

  • oh god 118 like 1 dislike i could be so rude :PPP na its ok i won't vote :D

  • Clyde Stubblefield is the most sampled and unrewarded drummer of all time.

  • The reason this beat was sampled so much is because it was funky and consistent like a drum machine.........just listen

  • Vote here to replace Little drummer Boy with this as a Christmas song.

  • @faceindawind Lol!

  • James Brown is Gangsta

  • Clyde Stubblefield is still the funky drummer. This is the most sampled beat of all time and he deserves more credit than he's been given.

  • @tbits76 I don't think so. The most sampled beat would be the one in the bridge of The Winstons' "Amen, Brother" It predates this nice beat, also.

  • @haveajerk Meh, either way, they are the roots of Hip Hop. I was just saying how rich these guys would be if they were paid for every track their samples are on. Hundreds if not thousands of songs by now!

  • Song Of The Day.

  • this dude was amazing

  • Funkiest Breakbeat ever!!!!!!

  • Does the CD version have the talking at the beginning?

  • Jesus Crist come n save me, police state got me boiling like im gravey. cc cameras make me feel like im under attack while the central banks bank balance sheet gettin fat. and the poor are gettin leaner ....and the streets are gettin meaner,,,, Lord let it rain... and free me from these bloodclart chains .. cus i wanna be free !
