My aussie is able to express herself perfectly fine by shaking her booty uncontrollably. I wish people would not leave negative comments! You're companions are lovely!
The Aussie's bobbed tail is natural in most merles. As in, they are literally born without tails. The dogs who are solids (the tri-coloreds) are more likely to be born with tails. It's a recessive genetic trait in Aussies. The tails were originally docked by farmers who were worried about cows stepping on their tales as they herded. True, it's not necessary anymore for people to dock Aussies, but not all Aussies with bob tails have been docked and there's no way to tell just from looking.
The Blue Merle with the docked tail has a strong resemblance to our beloved Toby who left us a couple of weeks ago after giving us 14 1/2 years of love and devotion. He was an avid frisbee dog, and I have to say - if given the choice, I would have preferred him with his tail intact. Balance, expression and also doing his business without soiling the fur on his backside would have been benefits if he had a tail - any tail.
I've never seen an Aussie with a long tail. I had a female that came to us as a stray, whose tail was short. She had seven puppies, all with short tails. The one I have now, I bought at six weeks old, from a breeder. Her parents both had short tails, her tail is short, and her puppies tails were short. All the info that I reseach says they have short tails. But here are videos showing long tails. Weird...
@persnickety1022 there are aussies with long tails but people like the one with the bob tail more so there are more of them. in 4 weeks i'm going to buy one with a long tail
so, I went through and read all the comments on here and find it amazing how people say they love the breed, but know nothing about it. I love aussies with ANY length of tail...they are very different in looks from a border collie to me. BC's are more slender. Aussies are more bulky(beautiful bulky!) I just got my 1st aussie about a month or two ago and I love her so much! Shes a blue merle with one blue eye and one brown and a docked tail, but i wouldnt love her any less if it was a full tail(:
OOooooh look at those pretty tails. I wish the breeder hadn't docked the one off my Aussie. If only I'd known about the litter sooner. :( I do love his cute little bear booty, but still. You could have had such a fine tail.
I love my grandma' aussie. the poor thing has a badly docked tail, and we all agree he would have looked better without it.
I agree with the person that was talking about "breed standards" only applying to looks and selling the product, rather than insuring healthy animals. They are wonderful animals, and very loving, they are companions, not fashion accesories. :)
i have one myself and she is a red merle at 5 months age now. We are planning to get another one but we want a blue merle now. there amazing pets and friends!
Yay! I LOVE AUSSIES!!! They are great dogs with a lot of energy. An Aussie at Agility Class named Izzie loves my Golden, Fathom. Really, she just always wants to see him and give him kisses and play. IT"S SO FUNNY!!! Thoses are very pretty dogs, have you seen Marmaduke yet? It has an Aussie in it named "Maisy" Thanks for posting!!!
My aussie is the color of the tan one. Its called chocolate but i think its more of a tan color. We got him yesterday! He is so cute! He is alot fluffier than the tan one in this vid though. i guess its because we gave him a bath! Aussie love!!!!
It's not called chocolate or Tan it's called Red, where the heck did you get him from if they didn't even know the correct term for the colors? I bet the parents didn't have any health tests eather? did they?
@ErinKeechak We got him from a breeder. Well actually we rescued him from a breeder. They abused him and left him in a pen with like 10 other dogs as soon as we got in the car with him we called the ASPCA. I dont trust the breeder and yes the parent did have health tests. They brought out all the papers and stuffl like that. I really dont trust the breeders so we took him to the vet and he is very healthy! I think its a miracle! :)
I really want an Aussie with a tail, but I can't find one anywhere. It seems all the breeders dock the tails, which I don't care for at all. I'd travel a good distance to get one with a tail.
in most of europe the 'tail cutting' is illegal. im sure if you find a breeder and make a deal before they are born on what colors you want and that you will actually buy the puppy you can arrange with the breeder not to cut the tail. but in europe its mostly not done at all, exept in france afaik
They aren't docked, they're born like that. It's an odd trait, but they are born randomly with anything ranging from almost nothing to a full tail. You will see 1/4 1/3 1/2 2/3 3/4 and if there was any real way to measure it, anything inbetween.
So some Aussie's have tails? Mine has a full, fanned tail. I got him from the shelter and have always thought he's a mix. He certainly acts like an Aussie - loves to herd and be in charge.
But geneticaly speaking about 25% of aussies are born with a naturaly bobed tail. The gene for a natural bob is a Dominant lethal gene. Which means the dog needs one copy of the gene to have a natural bob and if the dog gets two copies of the gene it dies as a fetus.
mschnur A friend of mine who lives in Texas some times leaves the tails on her puppies. all her dogs are OFA health certified Hips and eyes CERF and MDR1 tested, and Titled. send me a message if you want to see her swebsite.
i love australian shepeherds there my fave dog breed im going to get one soon i dont know where tho but im going to get one im excited but those 4 aussies were sooo ahdorable they were soo cute but i have never seen a aussie that has only that color brown and white and a black and white one but i think they were one of the cutest dogs i have EVER seen
all aussies can have tails. there are NBT which means natural bob tails and when both parents´are NBTs all the puppies are too, if one is NBT , there's a mixed litter. in germany it is forbidden to breed two NBTs together and also it is forbidden to vut the tails off. in america the most breeder cut the tails of theit aussies or breed NBTs because in 99% they win at shows.
and sorry, but i think you have to know THAT if you have an aussie...
No the tails are actually bred out of them...we live in Australia..and our friend breeds them, no puppies have tails...sometimes one will have a stump slightly longer though..Some places u can still get them with tails.
they ARE supposed to have tails. It's just on some places in America they dont have any, cause some of the American breeders cuts the tail off when the dog is a puppy. In Norway its NOT aloud at all.
Love those Aussies! I have a blue merle--Igby's his name, probably the only Igby that's AWESOME. :) I've never seen a black and white one? Are they common? Or is it a mix of something else (Collie)?
I have an aussie pup, but i want a companion and i love the coloring of ur first aussie in the video. What is that type of coloring called? Is that a red tri? S/he is beautiful!!!!
Aussies have tails if you don't dock them at birth. Many Aussies are born with full or partial tails that must be docked to meet the breed standard. Those are very clearly Aussies not Border Collies.
@kodiaksunet Australian shepherds should have natural "bob tails" but some of them do not, and they then need to be cropped. They should not exceed 4 inches. That is what the breed standard is. But most of them are born with the "bob tails" when they are docked, they then get points taken away in the ring. I deal with the AKC standards and rules, i know them by heart lol.
@kodiaksunet "must be docked"? I can't agree with that. Sure they can be beautiful without tails but you're "just" cutting a way to express themselves, can also be used for balance. Breed standards are just a way of ensuring dogs will look a certain way and thus it would be easier to sell the product. I may be wrong but I don't care. I had a "pure" bred dog and that's what made me learn about genetic diseases. Dog's health should matter more than "breed standards".
At 0:24(one on the right) Looks like my dog, Keelies mom..Shes an Aussie too..V. beautiful..haa. when we hug my brother(orignal owner) and say "Hes mine Keelie, Hes mine!" she jump up on you and kiss you.:P
aussies with short tails have short tails because they were "docked" during eary puppyhood the one my family had when i was a kid had a "bobtail" and her puppies had bobtails as well
Do you mean that Pure-Bred Aussies don't have long tails? Or that the Long-tailed Aussie isn't a pure-bred? Because that Aussie has a "Natural" tail. Aussies can either have a Natural tail, or a Docked Tail which most people are used to seeing on this breed. Some people will Dock their Aussie's tails to make them have Bob-tails, but I happen to like the Natural tail. ^^
He looks quite purebred to me, and has a lovely head. FYI, while some Australian Shepherds are born with natural bob tails, most are born with a natural long tail. Many breeders "dock" long tails, but some are left natural. So there are three types of Aussie tail. Natural long, docked, and natural bob.
They are such beautiful dogs. My Aussie shepherd is 4 years old, his name is Scrappy and he is by far the best dog ive ever had. Cant have too many Aussies
I have two Aussies too,(Sydney and Wedge) great dogs. Mine were both rescured, one had a tail but we had to have it removed because it looked like it was crushed or badly broken somehow, the other was no tail when we got him. Still, they're both awsome dogs. Frisbee dogs at that.

That is definitely not a purebred Aussie. (long Tail)
kaleensfather 4 years ago
Do you mean that Pure-Bred Aussies don't have long tails? Or that the Long-tailed Aussie isn't a pure-bred? Because that Aussie has a "Natural" tail. Aussies can either have a Natural tail, or a Docked Tail which most people are used to seeing on this breed. Some people will Dock their Aussie's tails to make them have Bob-tails, but I happen to like the Natural tail. ^^
HerbertDaFeesh 4 years ago
He looks quite purebred to me, and has a lovely head. FYI, while some Australian Shepherds are born with natural bob tails, most are born with a natural long tail. Many breeders "dock" long tails, but some are left natural. So there are three types of Aussie tail. Natural long, docked, and natural bob.
