Oh god, I HATE being left behind! The arab I ride jumps like a goat. :P anyway, about the barrel jump... I understand the frustration, still not an excuse. however, you can slow your horse down by squeezing with your knees right behind the shoulder-- it is gentler too. nice jumps at the end.

forgot to say 2 months ago i braught my horse in from spelling and decied ill try jump wine barrels LOL bad choice !! didnt count him into the jump and he took it like 1 meter 20 higher and i got left behind .. ended up going to hospital after nearly braking my hip...
it all depends on how hard the horses mouth is.. if you have to saw to get the horse to stop or slow down then try getting a harder bit... like my mare was ridden in a grade showjumping for 10 years with a gag i now use a straight bar phellam which i find works better but when going out for a gallop i need the gag as she is very head strong but i love her...
Okay I guess that makes sense...my horse does have problems stopping but I tend to learn to take care of that. 4-H can teach you some very important methods I guess....don't really enjoy it.

I do believe in a good swat on the flank when the horse runs out, but not slamming the bit down on the sensitive bars of the horse's mouth... just thinking about it sounds painful.

These riders have good positions. Look at the title-What NOT To do When Jumping. This is a mistake video. Many of the clips where the riders get left behind show how well these people ride. I know many many others who would of fallen off.

My friend says sawing at the horses mouth gets em to stop easier but I never saw on my horses mouth to stop him. Pressure release is my motto.
