This was a test, it was RC. They were trying a new fuel additive that was suppose to reduce the dangers of an fuel explosion in the event of a crash landing. Unfortunately the additive failed the test, as demonstrated here the plane still caught fire in a huge fireball. They also had plastic dummies with cameras inside to capture the effects. There were NO people aboard this aircraft at the time this test was conducted, as stated it was flown remotely.

He is offered a mission like this; and if he survives, he gets his wings. I once knew a pilot for United Airlines who survived a mission like this. He wasn't the best pilot, but he was heroic beyond measure, and because of that they deemed him worthy of advancement..

Sometimes grit and determination are more desirable qualities, and these kinds of tests are perfect for determining such qualities.
