This is the way I interpreted the movie my first time but I wasn't that sure from the way the birds attacked random villagers. The ending scene was magnificent!
I didn't really like the movie the first couple of times I saw it. I kept thinking, "I thought this movie was about birds attacking people. What's all this other stuff? Birds!" But your explanation makes a lot of sense. I might appreciate the movie a lot more if I watch it again with this explanation in mind.

I just came from a horror/Halloween party where The Birds was one of the films showed (along with The Return of the Living Dead and Manos: Hands of Fate) and everyone asked why did they attack? One friend said the ending was symbolic that the Birds won. I'll pass on your views tonight when we meet our friends again
