@zackorourke The M40 series uses a short action and the M24 series uses a long action. M40s are worked by Marines at Quantico while M24s come straight from Remington.
Get your facts straight before you go talking about someone else who doesn't know their stuff.
@speedfreak247 Sweet dude way to reply to my comment from over a year ago.... Honestly haha all you guys arguing over it are fucking armchair warriors. I'm glad your so knowledgeable sorry I was wrong, maybe you should spend less time looking through comments and more time being productive with your life. All that matters is I know a .308 ballistic chart from a 20" barrel and MOA and Mil calculations by heart.
@speedfreak247 Hey mate I know you done this post ages ago, but can you please tell me the difference between long action and short. I cant get my head around it, to me the action has to be as long as the cartridge somming out of it
@KnivesAndFireArmsUK Thanks fro clearing that up the way some ppl say it it sounds as though theres a long and short action for the same cartridge i.e. a long action .308 and a short action .308
@KnivesAndFireArmsUK Nah Im happy with my Kimbers but a friend of mine has the 700 police and he loves it. Mind you Im hearing alot of negative reviews on the 770 alot of guys saying the 700 is deffinately the way to go with Rem
@MrDip02 7.62x51mm, slightly shorter than a .308, same bullet though. M24s can be converted to use longer cartridges though as they use the long action. They were designed to shoot .30-06 but after NATO adopted the 7.62x51 they decided not to switch the action. As a result there are some M24s today that have been converted to fire the .338 Lapua magnum and .300 Winchester magnum. The M24 has been discontinued and is being replaced with the XM2010/M24E1 system.
@nblax41 it's apposite i think and you can convert almost anything to those calibers and i doubt it's being discontinued maybe not issued has commonly as it was but not discontinued
@zackorourke Wrong sir, the M40 is a short action, It is the M24 that uses the long action, because it was originally going to be a 30-06, or rumor has it, but they used .308 instead.
@happy543210 Search youtube for 15qj032UJ1I , and see if you still think that after watching that video. Its a myth. You only get more velocity from a longer barrel, a short barrel is definitely more accurate, in the same contour as the long barrel.
@happy543210 Rofl. Do some research please, and you will know. Velocity doesn't necessarily mean more accuracy. As you said, it just means less drop. It also has nothing to do with the spin, what so ever (lol). There is plenty of tests people have done that take a 24" rifle and cut it to 16" in 2" increments and test each one, and there is no accuracy loss at all, only about 350fps on 300 win mag. So it goes down to 30.06 velocity, While still shooting sub 1/2 moa accuracy to 1100 yards.
Dude, a spinning projectile will have a straighter trajectory--that's one of the principles of ballistics. Hell, that's the reason for rifling a barrel in the first place.
@happy543210 Wow. You're amazing. So you are telling me, that my 1911 .45 pistol that has a 1:12" twist 5" barrel, and my .308 with 1:12 twist 24" barrel are going to spin the bullets at different speeds? Please oh great one, explain that feat of physics to me. Every barrel is rifled. 1:12" means it spins the bullet one rotation in every 12" of distance traveled, weather the barrel is 2" or 32". I will say again- DO SOME RESEARCH. search "is a long barrel more accurate then a short one"
You're wrong again, sir: 1 in 12" twist means that the groves inside the barrel make a complete circle (360 degrees) in 12 inches. The more time a bullet spends inside a rifle, the more spin is gonna be imparted on the bullet as it travels through the grooves.
@happy543210 Haha. Cool story bro. So you think the bullet isn't going to spin at the same rate as the rifling? Really? Thats awesome. What do you think its doing just deforming straight through the bore until the rifling grabs it or what??? Go read a book. Or better yet go cut a rifle and re crown it and find out for yourself instead of just assuming, and pulling shit out of your ass.
@happy543210 I'm not sure it is going to have more spin because the barrel is longer, all things considered, if it is 1:12 then it is 1:12. A longer barrel is going to allow more time for the pressure to increase thus creating more bullet speed thus increasing the range. Some schools of thought believe that a 20" barrel is optimal for a .308 accuracy but results in a slightly slower bullet. 1000 yards for a LTR is completely doable. Just have to punch in the dope on the scope.
By the way, if I do a search on, "is a long barrel more accurate than a short one?", all I'm gonna get is the ignorant opinion of a bunch of high-school dropouts, who after joining the Marine Corps and taking a 3-5 day course on firearms, think they know everything there is to know about the science of ballistics.
@happy543210 Ya keep assuming everything through your whole life, and you will never learn anything. Search "What Makes a Rifle Barrel Accurate" and the first one in google will be an article by Dan Lilja, maker of some of the best barrels in the world (far from a dropout). Read that, and the other barrel making article on Rigidity of bench-rest barrels, and you will learn a lot. There are also a lot more articles you could probably learn from. Happy reading.
@happy543210 On the other hand if you were to take a .308 and cut it to 16" You wouldn't have enough velocity to stay supersonic to 1000 yards, which would obviously mean less LONG RANGE accuracy. It will still shoot fine as long as the bullet can stay supersonic. These days most high end rifles can shoot sub 3/8 moa accuracy weather they have a 26" or 18" barrel. Hell most are guaranteed to.
@happy543210 Also, the only reason people think that is with a longer barrel, with open sights, you get a longer sight radius, which can be much more accurate to a point. None of that matters with a scope.
would the "patrol rifle" set-up with the aimpoint be a .223 LTR or .308 version? i like the idea of the short-midrange bolt gun, but wouldnt the .308 be out of place in that role? and then, utilizing the .223 round, would the LTR bolt gun be similar to a semi-auto ar-15/etc .223 weapon, ballistically at least?
@De908 why choose 223 when you can have 308? The purpose of a rifle like this is making few and well aimed shots. You might as well go for the extra power and penetration of .308. A 20" barrel semi or full auto rifle in .223 should have similar ballistics to the 20" LTR in .223.
what caliber is it? function good, or bad? MOA groups? weight?
I don't like the trend of weapons being built with cops in mind. I support law enforcement(at this time) . But one day , regular gun owners will be classified as criminals.
I have a question about fixed power scopes. I see real military rifles being fitted with something like a 10x fixed power scope. How much range would one of those give you? Shooting with a 308 for example? Could you still pick off targets at 800-1000 yards with this smaller magnification? Thanks
@lobzdik that the military uses it doesnt mean its good. with a 10x u might be able to hit a person at 800 yds but its gonna b very unconfortable. and also, i hope u wont be shooting ppl, and u wouldnt be able to c a steel or paper at 800 yds with 10x. ive also heard that now theyre switching to variable power scopes. if ur gonna be shooting past 300 u might as well buy a variable scope with a bunch of power.
Could you envision a smith'ed :-) mauser or enfield design light tactical rifle. I'm a big fan of early century rifles for their speed and accuracy. Most of them pack a decent caliber and are quick handling, what do you think? How difficult would it be to fix a rail to their thick receivers or convert the floors over to accept a detachable mag? Thanks for the web blast.
It would have been nice for you to tell us a little detail about the LTR, like what caliber it is. And why that caliber is best for the situation you are describing.
motogpracer87, He's not necessarily upset about longer barrels, he notes that many people use larger, heavier, and longer rifles for short range purposes (within 100 yards). So he deems the high upgrades ultimately useless when all you need (according to his standards) for short-range shots are rifles with shorter barrels and smaller scopes (he calls them 'glasses') such as the first rifle he was holding.
hell yeah i got the sps in .308 and i super love it . it feels great in your hands the stock is very comfy all u gotta dois add a scope and bipod and u havethe best rifle ever
I can't afford it but I'm making a few sacrifices for the little extra it costs on top of the SPS - I just want that aluminium bedding and shorter, fluted barrel. Worth it I think. P.s cant afford it yet because Im putting a Nightforce NXS 3.5-15x56mm on it !
Nice vid! Sorry, quick question.. What's the deal with firearm laws in Alberta Canada? I've heard you don't need a lisence for hunting/recreational guns, especially .22's. Is that true?
Unfortunately, if you want a different bolt knob, you'll either have to cut off your old knob and thread the stump, weld on a new threaded handle, or replace the bolt and reheadspace.
Midway usa sells a pretty nice bolt knob from badger ordnance. All you need to do is find a reasonable gunsmith to do it or take on the task of doing it yourself.
It really doesn't. In fact, shorter barrels (to a point, of course) aid in accuracy by limiting the effects barrel vibration on the projectile. With the .308 from a 20" barrel you will lose some velocity however. That will be detrimental to accuray at very long range as keeping the bullet supersonic to the target will be difficult.
did he say glass for scope? anyway, i like the second one, the camo one, looks amazing. haha, big knob for his arthuritis, not laughing that he has arthuritis, but a nice touch
You guys this is Clint Smith. He's not an auctioneer. He's one of the best firearm instructor out there these days ......he's also got a very good lookin' wife & she can shoot very well. And she is also an firearms instructor!
I really like the idea of the dot scope on the first rifle. Great video. Thank you, sir.

bodinbro 2 years ago
It really doesn't. In fact, shorter barrels (to a point, of course) aid in accuracy by limiting the effects barrel vibration on the projectile. With the .308 from a 20" barrel you will lose some velocity however. That will be detrimental to accuray at very long range as keeping the bullet supersonic to the target will be difficult.

interesting... but length and barrel weight are a factor to accuracy... as are many other things... he prob shoulden't have said that

Wonder how tight grouping is at 100 yards for .308? What type of ammo and weight?

You guys this is Clint Smith. He's not an auctioneer. He's one of the best firearm instructor out there these days ......he's also got a very good lookin' wife & she can shoot very well. And she is also an firearms instructor!

I looked up the LTR, and it's only mentioned on the Remington LE website, anyone have an idea why?
Pillowpants1019 3 years ago
Because is made for LE only, in some places you can get them, but Remington will not sell them directly to civilians
