Like everyone else, this is a defiant fix. Just take a knife (or precision Flathead screw driver if you have one) and little by little turn the screws to the left. It may not seem like you're turning it but you are. Just keep going, trial and error until it works. 100%.

This is whats call a pots calibration and it work on my open tray error, Go to pothsprojects com and follow the guide it worked. use a digital ohm meter and set it at 20k , factory setting are from 4.0 - 6.4 , I set mind at around 4 works great now. Don't go no lower than 3.0 or you'll blow your laser.

Hey I noticed a problem... I'm working on it right now. When I tweaked it, the game works... BUT apparently it wont play multiplayer and cuts off.. I have tried this with multiple CLEAN games. I did Halo 3, COD Black Ops, And Battlefield Bad Company 2.

Any tips for a idiot who turned both screws i noticed it having more or less power, still didnt help,i have the Phillips drive, Disk spins fine at the beginning but never works just stops at the second laser,its seems to reset it self in the right position,i have cleaned lense, it seems to work it bobs up and down and has laser, i dont know wtf is wrong with it, the worst quality console buildwise i have ever owened

I have a problem. I keep adjusting the screws and what mine does is the disc will spin for about 10 seconds and you can see the red light on the disc then it will stop, spin for a couple seconds then stop and do that about 3 more times then it says open tray. please help

what this does is either raise or lower the resistance. when you lower the resistance, more power gets to the eye meaning it can read better....the drawback(sadly)....is that more juice your eye gets the faster it will die (it's working harder than its supposed to). Your supposed to use a multimeter and measure this resistance. Specs for each drive can be found with research(google). & the recommended value is an important thing to not exceed unless you really dont mind replacing the drive(30$

@rrapapoose tried this on a friends xbox but no success. sometimes i can get it where the disc spins for a few seconds but it still doesn't read it even with really low resistance but the xbox still reads music cd's fine. Any ideas?

@ozi76 . Make sure that its the left potentiometer that your turning counter clockwise. Not both or only the right pot. & you can rent a multimeter from autozone. make sure you don't go lower than 3.4 Ohms.  Lower than that on any drive will fry it in less than two hours.(lol i've done it on old 360's). & if you reached 3.4, and it still won't read retail discs...my friend i'd have to say the things junk.

@stikynote2003 Use a Multimeter and set it to ->+ (that's what it kinda looks like) then adjust the two screw thing's until you get 1000 on the meter and get as close to 1000 as possible but only turn the screws a Micrometer (that means a hair of a turn) ... what your doing is focusing the laser instead of paying $100 for a new one you can do it yourself. good luck :)

@095KiDDo you can buy a multimeter from a hardware store there use's to test voltage and shit, you put the multimeter in the two screw things on the side of the laser, is it say's -???? (negative number's) then touch the screw's with the opposite wire's

Well this actually works but what it does is it decreases the resistance in the power of the lens so that that lens actually takes in more power so it "reads" harder. Ofc this lowers its "life" and it you overdo with the screw you will burn your drive. This must be done ofc with a multimeter if you wan to know exactly the ohm resistance which must never be lower than 3k ohm. Liteon drives need to be turned counter-clockwise,hitachi is clock-wise.  Try to find some extensive guide in the internet

I wasnt going to calibrate my pot because the tut said I needed an electronic micro screwdriver and a multimeter, but since you did it with a fucking knife I tried too, I had to rotate the left one about 45 degrees counter clockwise. And just so you know the left one is the dvd pot, and the right one is the cd pot.

I don't see the knife actually 'turning' anything. It looks like you are only moving the knife up & down with the point in the rivet head. What exactly are you doing here? We have tried 'turning' it to the left and it really doesn't turn! It looks to be a rivet and NOT a screw. If it is a rivet, it will not 'unscrew or screw in. I'm confused about exactly how to manipulate this item!

@udevil7 you should know that if youre going to tamper with the inner workings of your xbox there is a chance it will break. If you look down through the comments you will see that this fix works. It may be that your problem was not the same as the one that this fix fixes. Or maybe you just made mistakes and broke something when doing the fix. @1white999 Yeah actually i burn my lens lol. So first i replace the lens but i figure out that its not smooth. So now i replace the whole dvd rom. There only fix for open trey error is that you change your DVD Rom Thats all.

Maybe your turning your xbox off wrong so that the lazer doesnt have time to revert to its start position? Thats just a guess at what the problem might be. @WatchMeMakeMagic If you cant use the xbox then whats the harm in at least trying to fix it, better then doing nothing at all. If it is still in warrenty tho take it bak to the shop, tghe xbox in this video was more than a year out of warrenty so this was the last resort
