Hi! I have a question about separating Zabu and Cameron during the surgery. I am wondering if you worried about the possibility that they would forget each other and then be aggressive and hostile toward each other once they were reunited? I saw an episode of some cheetahs who had been raised together and a female was separated in order to have some dental work. By the time they were reunited, they had forgotten her.
I really enjoy your Cameron and Zabu videos, Thank you!
@abejita We believe they have been living together for their whole life and certainly have since they've lived at the sanctuary, this was never a big concern for use, we knew how close they were :)
These two are really close! I could see the expressions on Cameron's face: From worried, to relieved -- very quickly!! It's nice to know that they have each other for company!!
we are going to Florida on a trip in a few years. I was wondering if I could come and visit the BCR. All your cats look healthy and are not always going back and forth in their cages. none of the family wears fur or has wild cats as pets. we have a short haired fixed ginger tabby and a little dog. I love what you guys do keep it up only if we had something like this in Canada.
@denisesfeathers Hi, yes of course! We are open to the public daily, we are only closed on thursdays, we offer a variety of different tours for everyone 10+ yrs old and kid's tours on sat and sunday mornings, if you visit our website BigCatRescue*org you will find all the info you need. hope you can make it to the sanctuary ! :)
They must have been raised together from a young age, they were living together in the roadside zoo we rescued them from and we kept them together as they enjoy each others company. However Zabu was spayed as you know and Cameron was given a vasectomy so there's no chance of them breeding :) But you're right if we were to introduce two mature cats they would fight!
I know that Cameron and Zabu are very closed "friends", but when it comes to food sharing, Cameron tends to steal from Zabu. I don't blame him as that's animal nature.
That's a good question and one we get all the time on our tours. The reason is that thye have lived together their whole live so they don't know any better, of course you're right if we tried putting a mature lion in the same enclosure as a mature tiger they would fight to the death. But we wanted to keep the two together so they could hava a better quality of life.
Cameron and Zabu were rescued from a roadside zoo in new england where we believe they were trying to breed a white liger. We do not breed at Big Cat Rescue so Zabu as been spayed and cameron as had a vasectomy.
NaturalHit, very true about white tigers! Barbary lions do have extremely dark manes. there are so very few Barbary lions in the world and as of yet there is not a plan to save them. Cameron is a rescue lion and there is no way for us to know his lineage. DNA testing would be the only way to tell.
BJthePumpkinGuy, if you visit our main website there are come cute pix of Carmeron and Zabu on there. There are even some free desktop wallpapers and screensavers of them, too, also free.
I completely agree with you about the breeding of white tigers - genetic deformities, brain abnormalities - it's just not good because they are the result of inbreeding - and I feel the same about cross breeds (ligers, tigons, leoleps - yes someone in FL sucessfully bred lions & leopards ) not good at all and does nothing for the conservation of species
result of inbreeding?? white tigers are originally from siberia.. "white siberian tigers"... They are white because siberia is snowy and cold.. wtf is wrong with you people. It's called evolution. They adjusted to the environment.. they aren't white because of inbreeding.. wtf is wrong with you? Seriously.
Your statement is the most ignorant thing I have heard someone say about tigers in a very long time. Check your facts before making such statements. Excuse me, but I /really/ think you need to learn a thing or two about tigers. I have worked around big cats, and studied them for the past 10 years. White tigers are of the sub-species Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) Don't believe me? Then do some real research, maybe you'll learn something.
Ruredy2rok, actually white tigers are Bengal tigers and they come from the jungles and not from snowy regions. Siberian tigers are not from the jungles and do live in snowy regions and are not white. Do you know which of those two tiger sub-species is the largest of the remaining 5 sub-species of tiger?
AQuinault, correct you are. I about fell off my chair laughing at your comment. Do you by chance have a photo or video of you cat doing the 'filet mignon'? If so PLEASE PLEASE post it on ChatBigCats*com. That is NOT a chat room. Check it out.
My my, that lion certainly is an older fellow isn't he? Isn't it the bigger the mane the older? And that thing, scratching at the ground with his hindpaws. Isn't that some sort of territorial show?
That all aside, it looks like there was no ending aggression. It's nice to see animals that have had such a difficult life living together in a good place now.
Space4english, Cameron and Zabu arrived at the sanctuary together in 2004. It was our understanding they had been raised together. During their quarantine period they were separated. Poor Cameron would call to her over and over. He paced and paced. It was completely obvious how much he missed Zabu. He was extremely happy and content when they were reunited. So yeah, I guess you could say he is in love with her.

How can a lion and a tiger be placed in the same encounters, with each other, without fighting or killing one another?

Cameron is a big boy but most of his size is mad up of his mane that is really impressive he probably only weighs around 250lbs!
BigCatRescue 3 years ago
is it the max (250lbs) lions can get?
akasmarty2003 3 years ago
African lions can get to twice that weight!

It's true about White Tigers being deform. Majority of them are.
Lion's mane usually gets thicker in cooler climates and it stretches all the way down to their belly. This one resembles the babary Lion.

asiaticruffle 5 years ago
The hind paw scraping is a territorial thing, yes, part of marking. They'll do that while they scent mark. I've seen tigers do the same thing.
Mane size has little to do with age, except that a lions' mane won't become full until he matures, about 3-4 years of age or so.
