so here's my 2 cents on the song. take the whole batman and joker concept completely out of it. yes, it applies, but there are plenty of other ways to interpret the lyrics. for example, what i get out of this is someone struggling to avoid the spirit of death. maybe im completely off, maybe im dead on, but that's the general vibe that i get from this.

It also talks of batman and jokey twisting him, talking about the regret of his parents dying, as in "can't stand to remember" as in reliving those horrors and "can't stand to forget" as now that is the reason for the batman's very existence, to stop criminal scum. This is the total paranoia that joker constantly plays on.
