I think this closely relates to the food chain. predatory species (man) hunts for food, adapts to environment and becomes adept at getting food from animals and plants. as time progresses, the species becomes dominant eating everything in sight. lack of challenge from other predatory species and ready availability of food leads to longer lives and increased population...until the things mankind eats become extinct or unavailable.
