Il 76 is military transport plane. It has designed capability to land on soil run ways. Like dirt, ice and so on. It used to deliver tanks and company of rifles behind the enemy line. Carring supplies to expedition in Antarctice is easy task for that plane.
@emiratesA380NCL They fly in from Punta Arenas in Chile. It's a four and a half hour flight and you're sitting on a little fold down seat inside the fuselage with earplugs in.
How much runway does it need when landing on level ice and how much does it need on an incline? (or is that an optical illusion in the first landing?)
@darksergent they use the power of the engines and point the thrust in the opposite direction. Its called reverse thrust and you can clearly see the shell looking peice of metal behind the outboard engines
@Airshow2010 Is because the runways. The touchdown has to be positive zero flare in order to break the snow and allow the wheels to spin in the hard part of the ice that is how to avoid an aqua landing
@tsaarmartijn Not true, C-130, C-141, C-5, C-17, even Airbus A320 can do this. It's impressive yes, but Russia does not stand alone in Antarctic aircraft operations.
@docrw Americans also copy many projects of Soviet period F-35 from Jak-141 if to tell more that all engineering specifications and drawings the USA after disorder USSR.Il-76 a good birdie have been sold many years...)))
I have a question for anyone who's very familiar with the IL-76 and like-mission aircraft. How does the IL-76 not swerve on the ice when landing? Are their special tires? Do the spoilers create such a down-force that the plane literally digs in the ice?
@DaveFromBrooklyn I'am not a pilot but i guess that in a low speed (when you are not able to use rudder) you can adjust direction of plane by increasing throttle while on reverse. Generally the idea would be while one engine would thrust forward and the other on oposite side would be reversed the plane should start rotating. =P
@MisekD2 Actually the rudder in almost all planes is the first thing to have effectiveness, like in a takeoff roll, and the last thing to lose effectiveness, like in a landing run. But yeah, varying engine thrust in a plane like this will change it's direction whether it's in normal forward (100%) thrust or reverse (40%) thrust.
@DaveFromBrooklyn Actually, all it ever does, is slide. It slides on the ice and uses the reverse trust to brake and the rudder to keep going straight. If you were axpecting it to slide sideways, it won't because their isn't a force trying to spin it sideways. It is not like a car, because the tires aren't providing the forward motion. The engines are. The only forces that can make it go side ways are: wind, uneven engine trust and rudder. Wind can be countered by the rudder.
@odinandme This is probably a little too far inland for there to be penguins. That is of course assuming the penguins haven't been imported for silly filming of aircraft landing on an ice strip far inland.
Then pilots send this info to IBIS (ICAO Bird Strike Information System), to notice other pilots abot this kind of hazard. But, obviously in case of IL-76 only navigator mus afraid and anly from tall penguins. There is no risk for winscreen or engine damage due to impact with that kind of birdy! :)))

They will not use their brakes on ice. At 1:24 you see the thrust reversers on the turbines. These are turbine parts deflect the beam to the front.
The Il-76T was powered by Soloviev D-30KP turbofans providing a maximum thrust of 117.7 kN (12,000 kgp / 26,455 lbf) and fitted with bucket-type thrust reversers; normally only the thrust reversers on the outboard engines were used.
That is beautiful. I am a big fan of the mighty 76, and have spent some time flying her, but only in Europe. However it comes as no surprise to see her get in and out of an ice runway at the south pole! Like Patroni said about the 707 in the movie Airport (in answer to a junior mechanic who says, "The book says that can't be done"): "The 707 can do anything except read!" Likewise the 76.
well il-76 are amazing workhorses and they have good record of being one of the most robust aircrafts existing, we indians love these monsters. They are extremely powerful and there structure is very strong.
Gives some great views of the landing. The runway is 2.8km of blue ice, blown clear by the wind (which is why the pilot can't brake!). I landed at Patriot Hills in this aircraft last November. The thing that makes it even more exciting(?) is that you are sitting on a fold down seat inside the fuselage, with no view outside and plugs in your ears to tame the extraordinary noise. Stepping out onto the ice of Antarctica makes it all worthwhile!

Why do IL-76 land with almost 0 degrees pitch up all the time? I find that all other jets land about 5 degrees pitch up except in extreme winds.

I'm guessing it won't make THAT much difference if they use reverse thrust to come to a stop. Ice doesn't affect its ability to slow the airplane.
If they mainly use the brakes...well then, good luck... :P
