The KLR 650 is my 3rd favorite bike I've ever owned. 2nd. was an 87 GSX-R 1100 & my all time favorite bike ever was a KTM 450 EXC. After rideing off road on the KLR, the KTM made me feel like a super hero. I'm sure this is an awesome bike but, if money is an issue, it's hard to beat the KLR.
The KLR is heavy, but I use it for transport as well as off road, and probably hit 90% pavement 10% off road, so the weight of it feels good at highway speeds.
And the price is great, and reliability and simplicity are also strong points.
I have not yet tried the KTM, looks a lot more offroad then onroad

I haven't tried a KTM yet, but I would like to, the 09 690 felt uncomfortable sitting on it, and super tall, my feet couldn't touch the ground at all! This didn't seem normal to me.

Actually my first choice would be something in between to be honest (specifically the Honda XR650L). Its a bit heavier than the 690 enduro, but not nearly as heavy as the Kawasaki. It is less maintenance intensive than the KTM. And I believe it is more reliable than both. I've heard of guys logging 80k miles on their 650L's!

as for the last baja 500 i read ktm went out there n placed 3 overall. great feat! but they still have to deal with hondas riders----the best in the world- honda a-team. If you want to see what baja is about you have to watch DUST TO GLORY.... what a great movie!! but eventually i think ktm will take over the dirt and dual sporting.
i rode the the 625sxc last year. this year im riding the xr650r. comparing THOSE two bikes i think the xr takes the cake! of course the xr is old tec so its discontinued. but i think its also the more reliable, bullit proof and better performer. my next bike i think will be a 530 xc-wR (247lb) put a baja kit on it and i think it will beat all the competition. the dry weight of the xr is 278lb and you feel it. the new 690 is over 300lb but u dont feel it, (with e-start)!ktm is awesome!

I,m a ktm man but I have riden a HRC kitted xr650 and yes it went hard but these 690 are balanced, suspended, and the 60 horses are usable. Did I mention the ktm looks hot with the electric start.

The only place was tight trails and even then they never left me. I've ridden them all save for the 690, I heard the motor is awesome but the bike sucks ass for off road. I'd like to try the factor 690!
No it has about 50hp. However it has 45 ft/lbs of torque. The new 450X that still beat the 690 only has 29ft/lbs and 41hp stock. Its rider dudes and race team support. Get off the net and go ride!

The 690 KTM hasn't even beaten the 450X in Baja so the 650 will eat the 450x. I don't know about some people and there internet shit talking. I have never seen a KTM that could keep with my XR680. The only place was tight trails and even then they never left me. I've ridden them all save for the 690, I heard the motor is awesome but the bike sucks ass for off road. I'd like to try the factor 690!
