Maybe it was one of those..."You do what you think you should do" and they let you do it until you realize...OOPS...My chief did it all the time. During basic one night he had us looking for a "reducer" for a good 25 minutes...needless to say...we felt retarded after he walked near it saying "sometimes items are already in use on the truck"...lesson learned. Never will forget!
Women absolutely have their place on an engine. I wouldn't send a 6'5 280 pound guy into a confined space, just as much as I wouldn't send a 5'0 100 lbs woman in to rescue a 400 pound grandma. Each firefighter has strengths and weaknesses and it's up to the officer to be an effective judge of who is best for each task.
@pilot4life why would you not just open the hood? Ultimatley the hood needs to be open, correct? Why waste time and energy embrassing this person in order to teach a step that is useless. Not that I am God's gift to firefighting but the car fire is a pretty standard issue thing where I work and I can never think of a time when this little jive move would do anything but wear you out, because yet again say it does work. Great! Now you still have to open the hood. That is all.
@jflo411 well of course the hood still needs to be open, but this will give them a place to put the water while they try to get the hood open. its actually a very quick easy way to give them enough room to put the nozzel.
Who ever is teaching this "technique" is a fool. I can think of five better ways to open the hood of a car. This is what happens when your officers spend more time reading about being a firemen then actually doing it.
@jflo411 Thats not to actually open the hood. Its to give just enough space to put some water in, then they start working on opening the hood. It is just another technique for the arsenal.
When i instruct any of my students they learn that if something doesn't work in 30 seconds , try a different method. Besides we teach to use the flat of the tool and pry up the front corner of the bonnet. Much more affective
Excuse me sir...I am a woman Firefighter/EMT and I do believe that we women work harder than the men do just to prove ourselves to ya'll ! What do we have to do to make you see that we can do anything that ya'll can do? Note the"probationary" part!
Well there isnt anything wrong with women begin fire fighters. Ive seen many fire fighters and they are very good at it. The thing that was her problem was lack of knowledge and training.
welp see ya later, try the police academy. they love firefighter dropouts and their test is super easy. go figure.

@jflo411 It always seems that the first thing to burn/melt is the hood release cable. But, then, car fires is why God made the piercing nozzel.

it's not so much the lack of technique, it's the lack of strength and endurance that's the problem. she needs to hit the gym, ... a lot.
