Do we know that there weren't powder burns on him or was that just made up? How well documented was this story before broadcast? Also supposed confession about a cover up do we know that is legit or a wild story? What about other fingerprints on the gun wouldn't the police check that?
Chances are great that it was manslaughter. I don't think Lenore meant to kill him on purpose, she just wanted to scare him into going down to join the party. They struggled over the gun and it went off. This is what my dad told me and he's a huge George Reeve fan. He's read many books about the man and knows him much better than the average person.
George was about to be married to a beautiful lady (Lemmon), and was getting a nice raise for a renewal of his Superman series. There is no way he committed suicide! Get a clue! His jilted lover Toni Mannix paid for so much of his stuff, and was jealous he was getting married and putting Lenore in his will instead of Toni. When George died Toni got everything from his will. Toni probably told Ed Mannix George was just a gay friend, or something. Ed got suspicious when George engaged Lenore.

She also took 40 minutes to call the police, which anyone would do within 1 minute about someone they cared about. My theory was the George said the wedding was off. He was about to have a big show with a boxing champ, and needed his sleep. His fiancee did not care. So wedding was off. Lenore got mad and shot him. Hollywood coroner and detectives failed.

physically Reeves seemed fine, mentally was another story. It's possible that he was showing the gun off to someone in the bedroom, shooting it once at the floor and either through a dare or being drunk pointed the gun at his head and fired it having forgotten the gun was still loaded, it's possible he survived the inital gunshot but bleed to death because someone thought he was playing a joke and then paniced when they realized he wasn't thinking they'd be blamed for the shooting
I have always thought Toni Mannix was responsible. I also believe Lenore was a low life who robbed him blind before they even finished the so called investigation. Toni had the means. Eddie Mannix was the MGM version of a mob boss and he and Strickling covered up so many things that this would have been easy. The crimes those two covered up successfully is scary..

When I was a kid I was shocked when I heard George Reeves killed himself. I was really little and couldn't understand why or how Superman would take his own life. I wondered if it was a kryptonite overdose.
What I always thought was a bit hard to believe was this theory or suggestion that he began to suffer from delusions in thinking that he really was Superman and so he shot himself to prove that he was "the man of steel", this contradicts the fact that he wanted to actually get away from the role at that time, had it been the case that he was sacked from it and wanted the role back then this would have made more sense so I reckon there was a cover up, someone somewhere must know the real truth.

The conclusion they came to, and the one most people accept as the real one, is that Toni Mannix hired someone to kill George Reeves. Her husband was connected to former mobster Mickey Cohen, and Eddie and Mickey both knew lots of people who could be contracted for such a murder. Eddie and his associates at MGM had the means to cover up a murder and get it classified by authorities as a suicide.

To be fair George Reeves was superman. I can't imagine anyone who could have played that roled better than him or as well as him for that time. That is trap. Were there is greatness and strength there is also weakness. High rests on low. It lacks the spiritual view and achievement and success is overvalued in werstern society.

If Reeves were just an actor and not an early TV icon, no one would think otherwise. However, the fact he was involved with a MGM executive's wife creates reasonable doubt about suicide. Affleck nearly did a good job too except they had him cussing and swearing and taking his pants off with the women in the scene outtakes, etc. I don't think Reeves would've done a lot of that.
Seems to me that forensics could have made this case open-and-shut for suicide -- if that's what it was. And not rocket-science forensics, either -- just basic fingerprints and power burns and bullet-trajectory stuff. The real shooter may have moved stuff around in the hr. B4 the cops were called, staged the gun in Reeves's hand, or what have you. Can anybody produce the autopsy report, complete w/photos and measurements they would have taken? These things were routine even in the '50s.

Lenore was an evil gold digging alcoholic witch. Reeves was not going to marry her he was getting back with Toni. Toni's husband Eddie was dying at this time as well. I believe Lenore killed him, he did not commit sucide.
One thing I liked about the casting, oddly enough, is that he was mostly a normal sized guy. I can appreciate the $ appeal of hugely built superheroes, but imo Superman is different. In the comics he got his strength from our yellow sun. To me, that is very different than strength a bodybuilder gets. It isn't huge muscles because he repeatedly lifts cars, it's because of the sun. Anyway just my opinion.

Firstly, Leonore Lemmon wasn't an "actress", she was a spoiled NYC socialite who was notorious for getting drunk and causing scenes in nightclubs (the Paris Hilton of the 1940s). Secondly, Gig Young and Alan Ladd barely knew Reeves. If you want the story behind his murder, read "Hollywood Kryptonite". The angle here with Leonore Lemmon murdering George is patently ridiculous.

physically Reeves seemed fine, mentally was another story. It's possible that he was showing the gun off to someone in the bedroom, shooting it once at the floor and either through a dare or being drunk pointed the gun at his head and fired it having forgotten the gun was still loaded, it's possible he survived the inital gunshot but bleed to death because someone thought he was playing a joke and then paniced when they realized he wasn't thinking they'd be blamed for the shooting

What I always thought was a bit hard to believe was this theory or suggestion that he began to suffer from delusions in thinking that he really was Superman and so he shot himself to prove that he was "the man of steel", this contradicts the fact that he wanted to actually get away from the role at that time, had it been the case that he was sacked from it and wanted the role back then this would have made more sense so I reckon there was a cover up, someone somewhere must know the real truth.

The conclusion they came to, and the one most people accept as the real one, is that Toni Mannix hired someone to kill George Reeves. Her husband was connected to former mobster Mickey Cohen, and Eddie and Mickey both knew lots of people who could be contracted for such a murder. Eddie and his associates at MGM had the means to cover up a murder and get it classified by authorities as a suicide.

To be fair George Reeves was superman. I can't imagine anyone who could have played that roled better than him or as well as him for that time. That is trap. Were there is greatness and strength there is also weakness. High rests on low. If Reeves were just an actor and not an early TV icon, no one would think otherwise. However, the fact he was involved with a MGM executive's wife creates reasonable doubt about suicide. Could he have done it? Yeah, sure but the fact that he was in the house with several people and that one of them or anyone could have gone up and shot him. I used to see this show-pretty cheesy.

I wish Hollywoodland could've been made better. Adrien Brody's character was a complete waste of time (a fictitious "composite" character that takes up the plot of the entire movie).
Affleck nearly did a good job too except they had him cussing and swearing and taking his pants off with the women in the scene outtakes, etc. I don't think Reeves would've done a lot of that.

Seems to me that forensics could have made this case open-and-shut for suicide -- if that's what it was. And not rocket-science forensics, either -- just basic fingerprints and power burns and bullet-trajectory stuff. The real shooter may have moved stuff around in the hr. B4 the cops were called, staged the gun in Reeves's hand, or what have you. Can anybody produce the autopsy report, complete w/photos and measurements they would have taken? These things were routine even in the '50s.

One thing I liked about the casting, oddly enough, is that he was mostly a normal sized guy. I can appreciate the $ appeal of hugely built superheroes, but imo Superman is different. In the comics he got his strength from our yellow sun. To me, that is very different than strength a bodybuilder gets. It isn't huge muscles because he repeatedly lifts cars, it's because of the sun. Anyway just my opinion.

I all so believe he was murdered, the people in the house at the party know what happen..but like all cowards they wouldn't confess to it...

Thought it was the 50th anniversery. man, growing up,what preposterous bilge was said in the schools about his death.Next to Buddy Holly, Reeves personified the 1950's.His supes was such a happy, fun supes,as well as his Clark kent.

Wow, I never knew all of this before. I can't remember how old I was when I became aware of the Superman show, probably around 6 yrs old and I was told that it was suicide.
Guess I was 3 when it happened.

The picture of George in costume on the front page of the New York Post is still etched in my memory. It was a sad afternoon for me.
I'm too old for hero worshiping, but somehow those feelings of an eight year old boy from 50 years ago are frozen in time.

The more I see the more I think Mrs Mannix had him murdered. There are interviews especially with a man that lived with Mrs Mannix. He claimed she prayed all the time and asked forgiveness. I havent heard of Hollywood Babylon but I know Hollywood. Ive lived there and Im moving back. Its a place with so many mysteries. You never know whats true and what isnt. Look at the Hollywood sign murder? I LOVE La. Its like stepping back in time with the history and mystery!
