manhattanites ( us born in manhattan) and most new yorkers , when we speak of 'the city' we mean manhattan specifically.

in the eyes of most new yorkers the other boroughs : bronx, brooklyn, queens and staten island are the boroughs.

manhattan is the epi-center.

even those born in the other boroughs..when say they are going 'to the city'...it means they are going into manhattan.
