  • Master Marshall Gilkes, I'm really impressed you are an exceptional trombone player with a great level of improvisation, if you ever come to Spain to play I would go and see and if possible take a master class with you, congratulations to you and also for the drummer and bassist.

  • Is anyone else's right ear lonely?

  • I bought my first trombone today. What an inspiration you are for the possibilities. Jazz, big band, spiritual, limitless.

  • Drummer: "I got my eyes on you, ride cymbal."

  • Trombone is the most funny instrument to play because you can create new notes when and where you want!! I love it

  • Holy crap he's playing an Edwards trombone!

  • no tengo palabras ..... esto es demasiado buenO

  • that's positively amazing. hope I can be that good someday.

  • So the look Marshall gave the drummer at 3:25 ... was it "yeah man!" or was it "get the F*** off of my hemiola!!" ?

  • @trombonepenguin it was "this is the end of my solo, you're next"

  • Lol the drummer was rly getting into it.

  • what mic was used for this?

  • @ngarcia25 Audio Technica ribbon.

  • Amazing! I didn't hear a missed note in the whole piece. That's an accomplishment in its own.

  • What the HELL is the drummer looking at??

  • @josiah916 he meant what brand

  • Fantastisch!

  • He is the baddest cat on the planet!

  • Excellent! Thank you!!

  • anyone know what horn he is using?

  • drummer's haveing a music-gasm :D

  • exelente

  • i would do anything to get my hands on this music

  • woah, he has a ridiculous range

  • do you have the music does anyone know were i can find it

  • Awesome boning. If Marshall put a little more bite in the backbeat of those runs he would have been my new favorite. Having said that, it was incredible.

  • exelente!

    grandioso!

  • Sounds Great!

  • didn't give a chance to bass...

  • His range is ridiculous!!

  • Wow I think I now believe its not butter :D

  • j.j. johnson could never sustain a ballard!! after 8 bars

it was sleepy time! yes, he had a great 8th note line, but he had no heart for a ballard; that's why he said frank was a TOWERING GENIUS because FRANK played from the heart!

  • @thefreeworldofmusic

In that case, how about you post a video of you playing? And if you did, link it in these comments.

  • very nice sound :D like

  • 10 bucks says hes wearin touch of gray

  • hehe, he's making farting noises.

  • @thefreeworldofmusic

My comment was clearly remarking on his TONE, not his melodic interpretation. I agree that there is some reflection of the late Mr. Rosalino there, but I'd hesitate to call HIM a "corny motherf" as you have done to this man and to Eliot Mason. I doubt seriously that those around you bow to your deluded sense of artistic judgement. If you ever wonder why you don't get more gigs, it's because you're an asshole and people just don't like you. I'm sure JJ would agree.

  • @thefreeworldofmusic

Wow. Such an offensive, condescending tone to someone you don't know at all. You don't know my background, as a trombonist, as a teacher...nothing. I compliment a trombonist for his tone and you attack me. Nice.

  • hey marshall i really love this piece! do you have a score that i can get or look at?

  • I didn't know Tim Tebow played the drums

  • what is this piece called?

  • Thumbs up if your a Trombone Player!!!

  • who else started practicing after watching this?

  • Any trombone players out there that can tell me if the low accented bass notes in the beginning are named something, and if they have special notation?

  • @metsoforte Pedal tones

  • @metsoforte Bb :3 I tried playing this on my double-rotor bass... My slide's nowhere near fast enough, nor is it responsive to get those nice lip slurs...

  • what kind of mouthpiece is that?

  • @MasterJone1 Dennis Wick I'm pretty sure

  • Is any transcription available?

  • jesus lord. im gonna practice everyday for the rest of my life

  • geez the way he's jumping up and down from the pedals is ridiculous

  • He probably has the phattest pedals of any jazz trombonist i've ever heard on a small bore horn

  • Don't you guys just love that drummer?!?!

  • how does he get those perfect pedal tones out on that small ass mouthpiece!?!

  • @mrben772 i don't know but he looks like he's playing on a trumpet mouthpiece!

  • @mrben772 mouthpiece size just helps with your notes.. the instrument is yourself not the equipment. it just amplifies for ya. =)

  • No F key...

  • Who possibly didn't like this!?

  • I <3 g's in a sharp second

  • @TheRoZySaYzWaH1 me too :D.

  • what kind of bass is that? really unusual shape.

  • @damodrummer1 It's a David Gage "Czech-Ease" Bass, made for easier travelling.

  • marshall i just put these pants on!

  • @connerkins439 That is funny

  • @connerkins439 That is funny the crazy thing is that he is reading the entire lick

  • WOW i just startded band this year for trombone this makes my want to be a tromboneist for LIFE

  • unreal!!!!!

  • wow awesome

  • Holy crap, that's all I have to say.

  • Perfect.

  • The drummer looks like he's mad at his ride cymbal haha.

  • muy buenisosomo maestro de maestros

  • Seems like you hardly ever see trombone in a combo setting. Anyone know any other good jazz trombonists who do combo work?

  • @Nireves33 andy martin, j.j. johnson, kai winding, slide hampton, frank rosolino, carl fontana, robin eubanks

  • Note the ribbon mic on the t-bone; audio is out of sync with video.

  • Phenomenal technique. Great tone. What can I say---I wish I could do that.

  • Holy Balllssssssssss

  • dis is wat i talkin bout man i love 2 hear a trombonist with a great tone... well done :D

  • Look at Marshall's eyes at 4:07 :-D

  • Very good guys!

  • two people are woodwind...

  • Comment removed

  • @xusepul Hahahahahaha, probably :-D Woodwinds are awesome, but brass is superior by far :-D

  • AWESOME !!!!!! His range on this piece is amazing, it seems almost effortless.

  • that was awesome! such a shame that the drummer was pushing the tempo the whole way and just being too busy...

  • Wonderfull!!!! what a sound!!!!

  • Do you think he wrote all that down or do you just think he wrote down the main melodic line and improved all the fillers?

  • Awesome playing... one take done!!

  • this is music....

  • amazing, I wish I could play like that

  • Wow.

  • i only wish they would play his part out a little more

  • Does anybody have the TAB for this :-)

  • Oh man, he's killin' it! Awesome job man. :)

Nice Edwards trombone, I can't make out the mouthpiece though...anybody know what kind? It looks a little like a Dennis Wick.

  • @SadieAtCollege looks like a wick 6 bs

  • This performance deserves to be on a CD.

  • trombone volume is low.

  • the drummer has no excuse to make faces hahahaha

  • @Quibbleify lol he was in his own world the whole time

  • I'm simply in awe. I'm left speechless.

  • incredible...

  • holy crap...

  • Anybody know what horn he's using?

  • @TheMadKing527 He's on an Edwards T302 . Check out the full specs on his horn at the Edwards website.

  • Great tone!

It's great to see trombonists moving toward JJ and away from the squeaky, airy tone so many "hot" jazzers have. This makes me feel like practicing!

  • @oldfartcycling

It sounds like that because those trombones that hot jazz musicians have have snares.

  • @oldfartcycling

Why have a perfect tone where it's not needed anyway? lol Adding a little dirt and grime to the tone is what adds that swingy careless feel.

  • @Scariestkiller

Oh, you're right, he just doesn't sound good because his tone is clear.... What's wrong with him?

  • Comment removed

  • @trumpetysu

I don't believe I ever said there was anything wrong with him.

  • Thank you for posting this, there is not enought Marshall on YouTube.

What a trombonist !!!!!!! Simply heaven.

  • amazing! great tone!

  • amazing! great tone!

  • nice nice nice!!

  • Nel!!!!

  • Great tonal range, his mouthpiece looks like a Denis Wick 7BS?

  • @sliderman7 If I'm not mistaken he plays on a 6BS.

  • @lmalewic Thanks for that, I do have a 6BL, if you ever find out for sure....

  • Comment removed

  • @sliderman7 He does play on a 6BS for sure.
