  • my life would be so much easier if i had a tablet

  • Question: do you use a tablet or something, or do you just do it normally?

  • @tredlow He uses his wacom/cintiq

  • Is there a special brush setting your using to get your lines so smooth or is it just you being a bad ass?

  • Is this a regular tablet or a cintiq?

  • JOE SATRIANI RULES!!!

    btw, nice work

  • what software do you use

  • have wacom will ink digitally :-D

  • That was cool! and how tidy the line is using brush, I cant even do that -_- Art is fun!!

wish I can thought that Digital inking is fun..

    cute hat! er.. or head

  • Hey do you like draw a cartoon show? It looks cool and i likes your hat!! Or your head Mr. troll.

  • Agreed, it would be a loss of a great community if those mediums were lost. And, yes that is a very big possibility with the shortages of resources becoming more and more evident :/

  • Ok, so what your saying is that your a mediacentric person. Thats fine, you are perfectly entitled to your own opinion. Each medium has it's advantages and disadvantages. And no, nobody is calling you ignorant. But, let's look at an obvious step that must be taken when observing art mediums from a time frame persp. Yes, it's true Mich. didn't have dig. ink. But he also didnt have a jet to get around. Does that make jet travelers posers int he commuters world? Your perspective is skewed.

  • Founder3,I know you werent calling me ignorant,im not even a profeesional artist by any means..sometimes i draw as a hobby...you guys are the pro's...And what i see here and in ohter you tube videos is very good art work. Digital or Wherever...I can learn how to be better at drawing by watching these videos. Its true i prefer real pens and ink over the computer...Would MichAngelo have used a computer for art? who knows? I guess im kind of worried that digital are will make pens and nk obsolete.

  • Im not saying all you digital inkers and artst arent talented, its not as good as using real ink. Digital painting,Digital inking...that michealangelo guy never needed computers.

  • I wonder what resolution he's working at

  • also willobeen drawing on the computer is actually more efficient than drawing on paper. although this could be argued in some situations.

  • No matter what you need to plan your drawings out if you want to make a good comic. Even if the planning is digital, or purely mental.

  • this is how todd mcfarlane inks spawn now(issue 185) how is this better than real inking?

  • It is much more cost effective, time efficiant, and this method gives the artist the ability to quickly and easily test different types of lining and hatching that otherwise would take hours, if not days to complete.

  • this is what art is all about? cost effective, time efficiant? if your under a deadline sure...but it looks computer generated.

  • Ink!

  • omg cliffs of dover *____* awesome....

  • Wow, I'm not sure which is more awesome - your art or Eric Johnsons guitar playing. Great video, thanks for sharing!

  • What brush do you use because I can never get my lines that smooth in photoshop. The only way I can really get it to look that way is through path tools and such but, they are way to time consuming and less fun.

  • Wouldn't it save time to just do it straight into this program and skip the scanning ur sketches part?? Ur drawings are simple enough.

  • that isn't true at all, drawing directly into the computer is a really stupid thing to do, you need to plan your drawings if you want the scene to look right.

  • if you were actually paying attention to the vid you would have seen that he did plan his drawings out he just made the final decisions on the computer. please pay attention to the videos you're watching before you make ignorant comments.

  • I was paying attention to the vid,He used computer generated inks over his pencil sketch. I think real ink looks better...its onl my opinion i dont think it makes me ignorant.

  • Nobody "here" called you ignorant for your opinion.

  • yeah you stupid mother fucker

  • Very Well.

  • can you draw anything more than stick figures or do you need a computer for that too. Now what you typed WAS an ignorant comment.

  • Point taken faggot

  • Ahahaha, have no life? I'll quote something from you're page shall I? "i love dbz!

as well as pkmon, wolfs rain, dbz,db,dbgt, and darker than black" yes you are actually loser enough to have wrote that. Yes you are an idiot.

  • HAHA, yes mistachinese. and plus, this IS scott kurtz life. it's his job to draw this

  • Actually no, because in photoshop you can make as many mistakes as you want and still be able to erase it all off.

  • doesn't even show the type of brush he uses

  • Lolwut. Do you have any idea of what a tablet is? Or have you ever even had one?

  • wats this song called

  • cliffs of dover

  • Great art, and nice style. I'd love to know how to digitally ink that way. I can't really say I learnt anything from this video though. There isn't a single instruction on HOW you've done any of this - what tools, programs or brushes you've used. I'm afraid this doesn't teach a single thing.

  • Where did you get this version of Cliffs of Dover!? The version I... "found"... isn't very good quality nor does it have the intro.

Yeah, total GH3 nerd, deal with it.

    Also, good video!

  • Awesome.

I would love to see what brushes do you use for your inking. I've try to play with brushes in PS but can never make them work well. I love the effect of real brush (thickness variation) but can't figure out how to make it work with mine.

    I use a wacom tablet.

    Any ideas?

  • Second... =(

  • You have to set your brush settings to pen pressure under the brushes pallete. So that the thickness will correspond with how hard or light your press with your pen.

  • @escorialtube pressure sensitivity?

  • uh?

  • Oh and if anyone here knows, I'd like to know how he made the dirty paper blend in with the white.

  • He didn't, the "dirty paper" is part of the scanned pencils. The pencils are not part of the final comic, only the inks. The pencils are just layed down first, to act as a guide for the inking, but are hidden once the inking is finished.

  • I see. thnx.

  • Awesome! I love his drawings and PvP is super funny too. I am so totally putting a graphics tablet on my Christmas list.

  • woot world of warcraft x

    ahem...nice drawing i have to admit ^^

  • How do you remove that slightly dark scan background thing? (Happens about 00.47) Help appreciated folks

  • Do you use specific brushes? Are you using a wacom pad? Please teach us!

  • he's definitely using a tablet. inks look (and definitely are) so much easier with a Wacom.

  • nice work, but I advice you to use a vector software, it would be much easier to just draw the strokes like using the Path tool in PS, then assign a suitable brush.. the results is a much smaller file with any resolution you like, try using Adobe illustrator, freehand, or Xara...

    Good luck

  • Hahaha. I think its funny you want to tell a guy who does PVP how do his work. I understand what you mean by Illustrator though, but this is probably quicker in the long run.

  • it does not look like PS man.. you sure, what are those icons on the bottom?

  • its PS for Mac....

  • LOL @ "icons on the bottom"

  • These vids are so great! Super informative! It's like peeking over the shoulder's of a professional and watching him work in fast forward! Bravo!!!

  • Thanks for posting these, they are really awsome and informative.

    Spaz! ;P

  • Never ever sing again PLEASE!!!

  • The background music is Cliffs of Dover by Eric Johnson

  • huzzah I'm viewer number 15000

  • that's nice, but I wish you could enlighten us about light wieght. You have a unique style and I was hoping your share your philosphy on those who don't know how to ink properly. A bit of commentary would help. Still, thank you for the video it was nice.

  • OMG!!! I must know what the background music is. I would equate that guitar playing to Stevie Ray Vaughn or Matthew Bellamey. Makes the video that much more fun to watch.

  • The program is photoshop, for those who are asking.

And yeah, some of you are right. It's not exactly a tutorial. But, it is very kind of Mr. Kurtz to take the time to put togther this video. Sometimes it is an education of itself just to watch someone work! (Even if it is in fast forward)

  • whoa eric johnson! i dont think park street would appreciate such shameless copyright infringement hahaha

  • scott, how did you create those panels?

  • It could be just "Skull - Digital inking" because you didn't teach a thing.. But it stills a good sketch and inking.

  • What is the name of this software?

  • what? where's the color?

  • hey, may i ask what hte name of the background music is please? [: ty

  • Hey. This is a great idea! Skull teaches us the trick of the trade! I know im learning!

  • LOL! That's the best doorway EVAR! And at first I thought the quick mask comment said "Rayman Hands" haha.

  • Aha, like the intro. Thanks Scott!

  • Well the music was pretty awesome, but the video didn't actually teach anything other.

  • What program is that you're using?

  • Who's playing the background music?

  • It's a guitarist named Eric Johnson.

  • Scott, you're such a dork *shakes head*

  • Nice touch adding the Eric Johnson music, man! Kewl vid!

  • nice Cliffs of Dover, there. i liked watching your door creation, too.

  • Eric Johnson?! My friend, you ARE a true Texan. That was a delight.

  • Eric Johnson? My friend, you ARE a true Texan. That was a delight.

  • Black eric?

  • Cool Video Scott!! Well Done!!

  • Wow, I never realized so much work goes into inking a strip. I applaud you.

  • YAY!!!!

  • I love the accidental quickmasks and the super-zooms in the video. I can't tell you how many times I've done that, nice to see I'm not the only one.

  • I was totally checking out Kurtz' "dock"

  • Nice opening titles. And ever since Kris posted his tutorial on drawign Starslip Ive wanted to ink with Flash. Thing is, I can never get the brushstrokes as I want them, they always end up jagged or going in the wrong direction. Maybe I shouldnt drink so much before working on the computer...

  • Very cool. I am one of the many that appreciate it when creative people give a lesson on how they do what they do (like New Yankee Workshop... man, thats like powertool porn).

And, uh... are you drunk at the end of the video? Friends dont let friends drink and vlog.

  • Very nicely done scott :D though Id have to maintain that Lar DeSouza is the best. 4/5 stars *thumbsup*

  • Wow...I have got to get me one of those digital pads

man. Seriously! I think I'd finally be able to ink

stuff to my satisfaction (and, as pointed out in the

video, digital inking is eraseable and won't leave

smears! :). Thanks for the art lesson ^_^.

  • it's not inking - it's tracing </kevinsmith>

  • But when you're the original artist, do semantics matter?

  • 'twas but a joke!

  • Cliffs of Dover-Eric Johnson

  • I knew that guitar sounded a little too familiar

  • Looking out the bottom - priceless!

  • Eric Johnson - "Cliffs of Dover" - good video, BTW, scott!

  • nice one. whats that song?

  • Scott, dude, you have GOT to tell us what song that is! It's awesome! Great video too! keep it up "Skull"!

  • I prefer pens :D I CAN erase ink pens :D

  • Great music!

    Is it Eric Johnson?

  • For The Hands

  • Love the "Skull" cap you're not the only one skilled at being punny.

  • Can you see? o_o

    Ah... so this is how the pros do it;

  • Do you freehand all your lines when inking or do you use some tool? Also, what program is that?

  • He uses a Wacom tablet, and the program is photoshop

  • I figured he used a tablet. Though does he just use the brush tool or does he use the pen tool or some other tool?

  • Depends on his personal preference, but by and large you get the best results from using the brush tool (especially the way he was inking).

Most artists (myself included) recommend using the hard round brush for inking (unless you're going for a particular effect) as that's the most versatile, and the hardness means it stays clean.

  • thanks
