  • Knife... sure, gotta have one of those. but what are Americans so scared of that they need to pack around handguns. and dont say to defend yourself from a bear attack, or other wild animals. cause thats a load of shit. dont be stupid when u go in the woods and you wont have to worry about wild animals. nope carrying a gun doesnt make you a man it makes you a scared American

  • Yeah moab!

  • Hi, I'm a city boy, and I know this is a stupid question, but...what's the gun for? Thank you.

  • Gotta agree with all these points here! Been meaning to get a handkerchief since you recommended getting one a while back. I am one of those people that didn't grow up using one. But hey, I don't use my back pockets either, not yet. I don't like the idea of having storage space and not using it so that'll start changing soon.

The ION lamp is awesomely priced and very handy, perfect to throw in a pack that already has too much stuff!

  • I am also a big proponent of the AA because of its ease of availability, but I have begun to adapt my philosophy to making sure I have a light that will run off of what is available. So I carry a small AAA mini light on my keys, a AA light in my pocket and a CR123 light on my belt. This way no matter what I can normally bum or buy a set of batts for one of my lights from anybody I meet. In my edc bag I carry spares for all three lights cause they don't weigh that much...

  • I have an energizer headlamp, and even though I am never without my handheld flashlight I love the headlamp.

  • food

    gunz

    girls

    mancave.

    #lifecomplete

  • For real. The headlamp is quite possibly the most useful tool anyone can own.

  • For cold conditions, try Energizer ultimate lithium AA's and AAA's. Sams Club had a good price on them awhile back, 16 AA for $18- IIRC.

  • what about a good healthy penis?

  • who let this guy have a gun what a fucking idiot

  • @crad505 If you build a building in the wilderness and a big bear suddenly stands in front of you, what you going to do ? Do not be armed with a firearm beacuse then you know what you are, right ? A peace of advice, increase you knowledge in bushlife before typing next time so we do not have to read another stupid comment.

  • Check out the Mammut S-Flex headlamp. Runs off a single AA, so you can interchange batteries with your handheld light, weighs less than a AA battery, has a red light mode and a red blink mode for marking your camp at night. Great little light. BTW, if you have trouble in the cold with AAs, try the lithium AAs.

  • black diamond , xcelnt

  • black diamond , xcelnt

  • What about balls? I think a guy should have balls.

  • What exact knife was that? the action on it seemed amazing. Great video btw, thank you.

  • Could you recommend a knife for edc? I have been researching, but cant figure out what I want.

  • I'm seeing more and more flashlights come out with this little 6v battery and I have steered away from them just because they are not commonly available at this time. Good product review, thanks for sharing.

  • What if you can't carry a gun... I do carry a knife for about year now. Often a flashlight...

  • My proper light source is the sun.

    LOL!

  • A BIC LIGHTER IS A MUST. Even if you don't smoke, you'll find it indespenseable over time. The only thing the hanky is good for is tinder.

  • @yadidimeanmaine The only thing a hanky is good for is tinder? Really? There are 101 uses for handkerchiefs, a few are; tourniquet, compression bandage, toilet paper, headwrap to stay warm, keep sun off head, stage 1 water filter, torn into stripes for cordage, over mouth for air filter. As you can see the uses are only limited to your imagination.

  • Good review. After a lot of thought I finally ordered the Mini Grip. Looking forward to it's arrival.

  • Thanks for the review. I remember a little while back you did a review on the Cold Steel shovel for about $20. What a great buy! It is great little shovel with other capabilities. I will also check out this little light. Thanks Cody! -Tom

  • Why the hanky?

  • @RegularGuyTy There are 101 uses for handkerchiefs, a few are; tourniquet, compression bandage, toilet paper, headwrap to stay warm, keep sun off head, stage 1 water filter, torn into stripes for cordage, over mouth for air filter. As you can see the uses are only limited to your imagination.

  • Hey Cody, I remember a while ago you did a video on open carry within the city. I live in Portland, have a CHL and was just curious what your experience has been with it?

  • I am in construction, so I always wear carpenter jeans , guns in my truck, knife flashlight i.d pencils note pad and keys always on me

  • I prefer a good Multi-tool

  • what about a woman?

  • Good video , I did check on the diamond site ,looks like they did away with free shipping its 5 bucks now , 20 bucks for the lite , anyway I agree on the lite idea ,I'm always needing hands free lighting ,especially when I walk my dogs as one dog has to be on a leash because of an ass hat " neighbour " that is trigger happy , just for the record I do not let my dogs run loose without supervision ! EVER !Keep up the informative videos !

  • I don't carry a handkerchief with me, and at work I am not allowed to carry a firearm, but I'm all on having items available in OS situations. Real men carry as much as women carry in their purses. We're just more tactical about it. ;)

  • Even better the petzl E-lite longer run time more ajustments more lighting opts and it comes with red and white leds faster to turn off and on the better all around....

  • #5 A way to start a fire

  • I think it's fantastic that you decided to wait and wring out that head lamp a bit before the review.

  • If you don't have a tool box and know how to use the tools, how can you call yourself a man?

  • speaking of pipe what was that video of you working with thaat pipe and torch way back what was that all about?

  • im only 20 so no carry yet but i keep

    1. keys with a leatherman micra

    2. wallet

    3. phone

    4. a knife (right now a kershaw skyline)

    5. i have reacently started carrying a fisher spacepen and a moleskin notebook

    6. handkerchief

    7. and a 4sevens preon 1

love the load out and it all really does fade away and use all of it almost every day

  • knife/gun,fire,woman, sometimes beer or weed..... does a man need anything else?

  • I always carry a knife , flashlight, and a bandana, in California we can't open carry anymore :(

  • where can u buy real wool 100%, sock, sweaters etc :)

  • Good information! Thanks.

  • what do you use for your open carry holster?

  • that is a nice vest, looks warm.

  • all very useful just cant carry my pistol. thanks

  • Tried a handkerchief for the first time today. Used it within an hour to clean my nephew's spitup off of my shirt haha.

  • I would have to add a good pen and pad. As always I really enjoyed your thoughts. I could have used a nice little head lamp last night ( I sanded my driveway with a microstream ) I had my LD-10 with headband, but just to bulky. Also I have several headlamps, but certainly don't EDC them.

  • Knife: Check

Flashlight: Kind of. Photon Micro on keychain. A real one in house and car.

Gun: Soon... muahaha. Wasn't necessary where I used to live (suburbs, low crime), necessary where I live now.

    Handkerchief: Never, thats gross.

Also phone, multitool, wallet and decoy wallet(to give away to thugs).

  • What about rechargeable AA lithium batteries?

  • Comment removed

  • Also carry brains and balls.. In that order

  • Hey Cody, Just out of curiosity what do you do for a living?

  • Do you have any type of property tour of where you are now in the works? I sure would like to see it and hear about some of your ideas or plans. Getting off grid still an option?

  • Another item to carry is a fire starting source. I learned a lesson on cold wet fall hunt that made me glad to have a fire starting source, got caught by a freak storm.

  • great flashlight...the 100 lumen storm version might be better for my mining use... but it cost $49...

  • Hey Cody, have you ever thought about doing a pistol review?

  • You mentioned moving away from AA to CR123 Lithium. Have you tried the Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA's and if so how did they perform compared to CR123?

  • Very nice setup, and importantly so those things are very necessary for an EDC

  • $19.99 .....I would say that is a nice price!

  • would you mind doing a short video on your benchmade in this video. I think its the 940? Or maybe a few of your favorite pocket knives?

  • @mustang8582 i agree. i really want to see him review it. i think he is 1 of the best reviewers on youtube

  • I have a list of 3 things. Knife and Hank we have in common, and the third is a lighter. I don't smoke, but you can quickly make friends who those who do if you have a light.

I do carry a light with me everywhere, actually 2, but they aren't proper, they are bike lights, since I cycle everywhere.

  • You said the AA does not perform well in your environment and you need to use CR123. What about lithium AA? I have a Surefire that takes a CR123 and it is awesome, but I also have one that takes a single AA and is almost as good but half the price and uses cheaper batteries.

  • nice. i'll check out that headlamp when i get the chance. i've been carrying at least 1 light source (often 2) since i began watching these videos a little over a year ago.

i rate what i carry based on how often i use it and i must say, out of my entire kit, the torch has been the single most important thing i've ever carried, more useful than a pocket knife (though i always carry at least one of those as well!).

  • Another thing to add to my favorites folder. I have a mini Griptilion after watching your knife video. I have always carried a knife I carry mine in a sheath just easier for me. The head band head light looks interesting will keep that in mind.

  • @Graveltrucking Great knife

  • @wranglerstar Works well for me better than the Gerber I used to carry. Started with Buck then to Gerber now Benchmade and probably will stick with Benchmade. Never knew about Benchmade knives till your video.

  • @wranglerstar i agree with gun, knife, some kind of light source maybe not spare mag so much since you're odds of needing to reload during self defense are almost non existent the average shots required is 3 or less meaning even a snubbie revolver is plenty also what's what the handkerchief?

  • Cody - well done as always! I really enjoy your perspective on things and your desire to share tips / information. I agree 100% with your 4 items as a solid EDC foundation. I am glad you mentioned the headlamp. I have noticed that on your previous vids and was hoping you would mention it in the future. Rock on and be safe!

  • 2:30 but don't the other preppers make fun of you for wearing a light on your head and call you names like "3 eyes"?.... :)

  • @penguinistas that is why the gun is included in this EDC

  • @wranglerstar good point.

  • Good review

Prefer something a bit more robust (Fenix HP10), but for light duty use .... if your standing by it - may look into it. Don't recall if it was in the video but what was avg bat life ?

  • the link to purchase is in the description box

  • Your experiences with AA batteries (ie: poor performance in cold weather) may be based more upon the battery chemistry (ie: Alkaline, NiMH, or LiPo/LiIon) versus the size of the battery (ie: AA, AAA, C, etc). In cold weather climates, NiMH batteries, as a rechargeable solution, would be your best bet and should be able to achieve specifications, regardless of climate. That is, assuming you're not purposely freezing them. However, you will sacrifice battery energy density and product weight.

  • @deefdeefdeef You are blinding me with Science all I know is AA is no good in cold weather.

  • @wranglerstar

My apologies. Long story short, here's a rule of thumb: Avoid Lithium based batteries in cold temperatures. They will not perform until the battery is at body-temperature. If you need to use a battery in the cold, use NiMH or Lead Acid. Keep up the great work, Cody. Love the videos.

  • @wranglerstar As a photographer, I learned long ago that in cold weather, if you keep a second set of flash batteries warm inside your pocket, you can swap battery set back and forth as one set gets cold and slow, the other set will have warmed and come back to life.

  • @deefdeefdeef

Correct. Battery chemistry is the most important thing in cold weather conditions. However in my own personal opinion eneloops will work great in any but the most extreme conditions if stored upon your person to keep them 'warm'.

  • Nutnfancy has done a review on the knife that I would be hard pressed to rival

  • @wranglerstar nutnfancy..... yeesh

  • ★★★★★

  • Looks like a cool little light, does it come with a battery?

  • @rchopp yes it comes with battery

  • Cody,

If you have any favorite brand/syle of gloves for being outdoors in cold weather I would enjoy hearing a review. Recent gloves I have gotten make my hands sweat and then they get cold.

    Thanks.

    Rod

  • @boat6868 If you are doing heavy work like cutting wood leather is the best. I get mine at Costco. You can get a three pack for less than $20. For lighter duty like snowshoeing, skiing The very best is Outdoor Research. I have two pair that I purchased when I used to work ski patrol. I have had them for over 15 years with no issues under heavy use.

  • @wranglerstar Thanks for the quick response. I will look into the Outdoor Research brand.

  • My dad was always big about handkerchiefs and always ragged on me for never having one and wiping snot on my shirtsleeve as a kid.

  • can you show us what that knife is and do a reviw on it. i could tell its a benchmade but thats about it. it looks heavily used

  • @xxbryan715xx Yes you are correct its a benchmade 940 Osborne Axis. Its the only knife I own that can put up with the abuse I dish out.

  • @wranglerstar so do you think we could see a review?

  • I wish we were allowed to have hand guns in Norway.

Wranglerstar: Could you shed some light on what happened to your off grid project?

  • @Alamo2k I did a 15 minute video explaining the whole thing. Check the archive

  • I agree any law abiding citizen should be able to carry a pistol. Whether it be concealed or open carry. Unfortunatley, you may as well recommend some of us carry a bazooka as in if you are from New Jersey like i am, the powers than be consider them almost as illegal.

I really enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work. Looking forward to seeing more of the Off Grid Homested Project.

  • Hi cody. Always nice to hear from you. If you were not aware, energizer does AA lithium's and they perform very well especially in the cold. I run them in all my high quality flashlights.

  • I agree with everything you said, with the exception of the handkerchief. I have never had the need of one. I think even more important than the handkerchief is a pen. In the military, we always had to have a pen on us, and it carried over into civilian life for me.

  • @m081779 You should try it. Many of the modern clothes we wear are synthetic so its nice to have a soft piece of cotton to clean glasses. That is one of many reasons to carry.

  • @wranglerstar I am not against trying it, but I can't think of a single occasion where I thought "man, a handkerchief would be handy". The only thing I might use it for would be to blow my nose, and I'm not too keen on carrying around a snot rag in my back pocket. What else do you use them for, since I don't wear glasses?

  • @m081779 There are 101 uses for handkerchiefs, a few are; tourniquet, compression bandage, toilet paper, headwrap to stay warm, keep sun off head, stage 1 water filter, torn into stripes for cordage, over mouth for air filter. As you can see the uses are only limited to your imagination. @wranglerstar, a lighter is a must in your EDC!

  • @m081779 i thought it was stupid too. then i tried it. i use it more than i use a pen and i carry both. i use it to wipe off my glasses, wipe moisture off of car mirrors from snow, wipe off your hands if paper towell is out in a public bathroom, clean off your knife, stop bleeding, or signal if you are lost. i carry high vis. ones like yellow, orange and red. i have used the high vis to signal other hunters on my property and mark lost blod trails etc. it is an indespensible tool

  • @xxbryan715xx You are a man who gets it!

  • @xxbryan715xx That's fair enough. I may give it a shot. Heck, I didn't think I would use a flashlight or tweezers very often till I started having them on hand all the time. Now I don't know what I would do without them. I carry a lot of stuff EDC. I really want to rock a fanny pack, but don't want the accompanying divorce.
