I freaked out when I read about this in Popular Science. They just said its purpose was "to cut humans" with various objects. Sounds like a murder-bot.
Collision detection is easy. I have programmed computer-wafer handling robots to do it. (I did however nix a project to use our robot for implanting hair plugs. :-)) I have seen gigantic robots that detect objects with tiny wire whiskers, through torque monitoring on the huge arm's motor.
The trick will be making a robot that will slice a ham, but will not slice a human arm. That would impress me.
This is more important than it looks. Robotic actuators are pretty powerful and future robots that interact with soft-bodied humans are going to need this kind of programming to prevent harm that's unintended.
Imagine robots in some futuristic nursery. They will need to be able interact directly with children without hurting them.
Okay, but if you would only have a knife attached to a robot arm if you wanted it to cut something, right? How would you get the robot to tell the difference between a human limb and, for example, a slab of pork?
What is the point of this?

@authordragonbreath well that's obvious. A human will shout out swearings and a slab of pork will lie there silently.

i guess this makes automated assembly robots safer to work around humans.
It'd still bonk you on the head pretty hard though.
