I was turned off by Guerilla's martian aesthetic, in that the world wasn't enticing to me and wasn't much fun to explore. I enjoyed it nonetheless, but ended up enjoying Armageddon much more, since the open-world was irrelevant to me and the addition of the magnet / repair abilities amplified the amount of fun I was having to a ludicrous degree.

I got this game for free when i recieved my pc late, so i can hardly say wheter it was worth the money or not, however i must say, it is extremly enjoyable despite the liniarity, deffinatly a good passtime. 100% reccomend.

Either the franchise is linear, and they made Guerilla an open world because, hey, guerilla warfare, it wouldn't make sense to be linear, or they couldn't find a way to make this game an open world game, so they made it linear.

Ahh, it's a shame that they put the can on the Red Faction series. People hated on this game for not being free-roam like Guerrilla was, and that's a shame. This is a great title, it gave me 15 hours of fun, and I liked it more than Guerrilla.

The open world + destruction engine of the previous Red Faction was what drew me to it. Really loved driving around blowin' up high priority military buildings and bridges the most out of anything and I think that really made the game unique and entertaining. Getting rid of the open world in this one destroys the whole game for me. Major disappointment. Don't think I'll be purchasing this. It's fairly generic now.

I agree, even though it's missing the open world it's still fun, especially because they added what they missed... The ability to repair structures. I think you should at least rent this game for a night where you have the whole day to play it and maybe finish it or get very far because it's still a fun ride :)

@Sabaton999 Dark Messiah was one of the best fps games ever, mostly because of its combat mechanic imho. I don't think that there were that many different routes, but there were many methods of completion as well as lots of secret areas to find. Sadly Dark Messiah fucked up its secrets in that practically every secret item you found would be given to you in the next level along the actual path and that really makes them pointless. They were fun to find but that was it.

I have played all red faction games in the series since 2001, but not this one. I have never spent more time in a game than Red Faction II. I guess i have played it in hundreds of hours. But i never finished singleplayer. I played multiplayer with a friend on splitscreen with PS2. Great games, the destruction of everything makes you really hooked.

I don't get why you wouldn't have a problem with it being linear. All of the good things you mentioned would still be there were it open world.

It's a game where they give you a bunch of awesome tools, but they took away the sandbox to play with them in. RF:G was a great big sandbox. It had issues with the combat and various other things, though.

In this game it seems like they tried to fix some of the issues Guerilla had, fine. But why ditch what made it great and go linear?

Probably because they were short on development time. Or money. Or both. I don't know for sure but I assume making a wide open sandbox takes considerably more effort than a linear game.

The original Red Faction (on PS2) is actually the only Red Faction game I've ever played.

I enjoyed it quite alot at the time, and one of it's shining features was it's destruction engine (Geo-Mod).

The reason you couldn'y free roam becuase there was bugs all on the planet and the teraformer was down.. if they would of kept the teraformer up i wonder if they would let you free roam.. but then the bugs coulldn't survive do to earth like climate. i liked guerilla better. but i like the series; i hope the come out with dlc to play as jake mason.

@MNiTFTW I get the feeling you'd complain about it unless it fits exactly what you wanted. It doesn't try to do that, but it does a lot of other things particularly well. If it's not the kind of game you want to play then don't buy it; no reason to complain about it really. My problem with Red Faction: Armageddon is the combat. They send tons and tons of enemies after you most of the time, usually in big, open areas so there's no cover, and they're very stingy on ammo. Also, why regenerating health? In order for it to regen, you have to be in a safe place where you aren't taking damage, and there really is never a place like that.
