  • @jameslgunterjr uhh bootleg the video cause i doubt it's anywhere

  • there more dixie rock than anything

  • SHEEET!

  • Country meets funk. As far as musical alchemy went, the Band was unsurpassed.

  • @Stephanjnj

    This is what It was:

Garth - Classical Genius, musical prodigy

    Danko - Soul/Emotion humility

    Robertson - Lyrics/Folk Dimension

Manual - Blues/Jazz technique and character

    Levon - Groove and Country

    how I look at it

  • @Fruscianteistheman levon-blackness

  • A Canadian Band

  • @agrippa9 Levon was american

  • The best country version is Dave Coe. Mandolin, steel, fiddle. Or well this is the best country version but anyway.. She cries over my BON-ne.....sss.

  • She cries over my bones.

  • my favorite version of this song........

  • 2 people have long black hearts

  • woooooowwww

  • you can't listen to this song without blasting it at full volume lol

  • it's a shame robbie gets all the credit over guys like levon and richard

  • @ostynd there was no Band stars, hence Robbie got ideas, they was a band, not "hot & poo" + the band

  • @ostynd I don't think this is true at all..

  • @subg88 dam skippy

  • tres tres bonne/ superbe!!!!!!!!!

  • oh Lord...for the days of real music and lyrics............

  • i used to think this was a johnny cash original; it blew my mind when i found it was the band. i love the harmonies in the chorus. what a great song.

  • @munveer1

Cash released his version before the Band, however, neither is the original. Lefty Frizell released the original version in 1959. Cash, Frizell, the Kingston Trio, Joan Baez and others all recorded this tune prior to the Band.

  • @munveer1 JC did rock this, back in the day bro - much luv

  • God bless 'em all... Doesn't get any better than The Band!

  • yeah it's a Apmeg ABM1 bass. also known as a Scroll bass. indeed very few made... there is a bass builder who makes these basses by the original drawings by ampeg..... u should be able to find it on google

  • The person who didnt like this amazing song did not have an alibi

  • @TheRockMetalDude

The man without an alibi would appreciate this song the most!

  • I Love this man's voice!

  • best version of this song ever. nobody plays bass like ricky

  • awsome! great vid,audio!

  • Can anyone help me as to what the bass is that Rick Danko is using??

  • @SouthBoundSaurez

It's an Ampeg fretless Bass....not too many made, but popular worldwide.

    Hope it helps.....

  • this live version is my favorite version on Long Black Veil I've ever heard.

  • fuckin drunks.

  • yea, theres a story in the band and America, where on the festival express tour,

as they traveled further on the numbers keep getting fewer and fewer so the tour just fell apart, towards the end, so they all flew home.

  • @Lazairus wasn't the Festival Express tour in Canada?

  • What a band!

  • would give my left nut to go back in time and follow that train across Canada.

  • Badass.

  • Bad ass.

  • Love the sustain on the chords on the Telecaster, I just eat that stuff up. Wish they had taken longer on the outro, it didn't have to be over so soon!

  • Man, he sings like he is running out of breath. It's a bit exhausting to listen.

  • This is by FAR the very BEST version of this song ever!!, Rick vocals are far beyond excellent, he was meant to sing this tune!

  • I love how at 35 seconds Levon comes in singing the scaffold was high verse (incorrect verse) and Rick looks at him like "what are ya doin buddy wrong verse"

  • @TheJseiler HAAAHA wow i would've never noticed that! now i laugh everytime!! lol i gotta say, though, Levon got it back together pretty quickly!

  • I just love how he plays the bass and sings he's so cute!

  • Perhaps the best cover of all of this "instant folk song" -- as the songwriters described it.

  • why the hell isn't this on the Festival Express dvd?!

  • Poor Rick was the only member of the Band who couldn't grow a kick-ass beard.

  • @Joshmotron

    my plight as well.

  • Yea that is it..........

  • the very best band ever.................THE BAND !! Living in the UK, I was so lucky to see them at Wembley in ( I think ) the late 70's. CSNY and Joni Mitchell were on the same bill. I nearly cried tears of joy to see my heroes on stage. Thanks fo sharing this wonderful clip.

  • @stratking69er I'd say "The Hawks" were running good competition to "The Band"

  • Not only a great voice, but I've never heard anybody play bass like he did. So unique.

  • love him!

  • Thanks for posting this. Danko very much.

What he does at 1:33 through is so great.

  • What a stunningly awesome performance. The Band is just so fucking awesome.

  • Based on the number of views it appears this is an overlooked performance, yet it is quite extraordinary.

  • Just saw Levon. still doing this song. Its amazing but nothing like this. Danko = Legend. Nobody did it like Dank did. Simply amazing. R.I.P. Those of us who are true fans shed a tear at this.

  • This is about when I saw The Band at Carter Baron in DC

  • This couldn't have been done better

  • danko=god

  • I've seen this song played by a few different people but nobody comes remotely close to this. Danko was the man and he absolutely owned this song. Far and away one of the best musicians of all time.

  • i think mick jagger based his rendition of this song directly off of how rick sang it.

  • Danko man.

  • Rick Danko is the best fretless bas player ever

  • charles mingus.

  • awesome thanks

  • Rick's voice is so amazing.

  • one of the best songs, in a narrative / pop song sense, ever? definitely up there. sup hunt.

  • danko man

  • Whoever wrote the song doesn't matter. What matters is how much the Band rocks this tune!

  • Class rendition - Powerful. Thanks for the link to this SpliffyFloyd and Thanks for posting zreiff1

  • tres stupid!

  • Zep and CSN(&Y) are both awesome.

  • agreed about zep....and YES this is folk rock....lol....they are just ignorant man dont worry....hmmmmm let's see a FOLK song in ROCK style........FOLK ROCK!!!!right on brother...glad to see a true music fan!!!

  • you really don't know what you're talking about. this isn't a johnny cash cover, because Johnny didn't write it, dumbass. maybe you should get a history lesson before you insult people over the internet.

  • Who gave PageandPlant a thumbs down? He's absolutely right. This is not a Cash song, its a Lefty Frizell song. And you shouldn't act like you know shit when you don't. PageandPlant was correct twice in his post.

Mr.Nicolasgers should have a negative 10 for his dumb comment but I guess how bad he made himself look is punishment enough.

  • Lefty Frizzell? Isn't it from Danny Dill and Marijohn Wilkin?

  • yep - Dil and Wilkin.

  • Who gives a fuck what you call it?

  • @PageandPlant4Life I don't care what you call the Band's music. It rocks big time.

  • how is this not folk rock??? i cant wait to hear this.....enlighten me....lol.....

  • "folk music" encompasses so many styles from blues to country and even jazz that its an extremely broad term. yes, the Band did obviously have some folk elements but they certainly did not consider themselves "folk rock". while they did play traditional music on electric instruments that does not classify them in the genre officially known as "folk rock", that is something completely different. the Band called their music "americana" but its more widely referred to as "country rock". understand?

  • im not talking about the band, im talking about folk rock.....understand?...lol.....lay off dude who do you think you are...arlo?....lol.....

  • The Band never agreed to the genre name "Folk rock" it's just what music magizines at the time said. The Band just simply wanted to A BAND and just play music......they really didn't want genre specification. Hell they didn't even come up with the name The Band. It was just a nickname that Bob Dylan gave them and what their neighbors called them. When it came time to release the Big Pink LP and they didn't have a name Capitol called them The Band

  • THATS REAL BAKERSFIELD COUNTRY

  • If this ain't rock'n'roll, I don't wanna know what is.
