  • Nellie has more talent in her pinky finger than Adele has on her whole body.

  • i remember thinking she was a bit overrated back when she came out. still do

  • imagine how confused these chicks would be if she sung Mother of Pearl.

  • Wasn't she 22 when Get Away From Me was released?

  • One of the funnier things I've seen lately.

  • Ha! The ironing is delicious.

  • Under the word "Irony" in the New American Dictionary ... just a picture of Nellie Mckay.

  • what the hell was JOY-less bitching about?

  • "you guys are getting a copy!!!"... Dumb ass!.

  • Man, those four non-contributing zeros are awfully close to Nellie's piano. Back off bitches, give a genius some space!

  • OMG 19!! She is an old spirit :)

  • I think it's probably safe for me to assume that this was her first and last appearance on The (ignorant) View.

  • @acerbicvoice anti-social is socially destructive; an anti-social person is one who would beat the pulp out of somebody and laugh or someone who would burn down somebody's house for no reason.

  • She's terrifically talented. In her attitude there's something complex that I can never quite pin down: she combines shyness and aggression, sweetness and bitterness, in ways that suggest that a lot is going on her mind.

  • <3 Nellie

  • Honestly when I saw her and saw that she was dressed like the girls on The View I almost peed. And then I thought maybe it has something to do with the song. Then I thought maybe it has something to do with all of it, and the song choice and the dress and everything was all a stab! I love it!! :)

  • Oops, 5 people accidentally clicked dislike..Be careful!!

  • (Start this at 2:21 if you don't want to scream.) This lady is fantastic!

  • So.... People think this song is too subtle for married women to get the humor? Not everyone becomes outraged when a complete stranger pokes fun at them. Just because they're smiling doesn't mean they're thinking, "Awww... She wants to bake cakes, too!? We'll exchange recipes backstage, and maybe I'll give her my nephew's number! She'll make a him a fine wife!"

  • Kinda like Colbert performing for President Bush. I don't think they understand she's making fun of them.

(Woops - I didn't notice someone else had made the same comparison. Great minds).

  • i dont see anything to indicate that the hosts didnt get her schtick. do you really think theyd let her on without knowing what she was gonna play beforehand?????

  • what year was this?? 2001 ish?

  • @LoveForPhysics Get Away from Me came out in 2004 so it'd be 04-05 I guess.

  • @LoveForPhysics I think they got her age wrong, because Get Away From Me was released in 2004...

  • @SensationallyRad She lied about her age and said she was like 3 years younger. I don't know why she did. Maybe to make herself look more mature for her age. I don't know when she gave her real age. I just remember reading that somewhere.

  • I wanna get married too. A blonde genius.

  • pwnage

  • Love it, the sarcasm is perfect.

  • could it be more obvious that none of those hosts have listened to a single second of her music?

  • i LOVE how the one's like funny ur album names get away from me but the songs i wanna get married just not understanding xD

  • seriously, i think i was almost more amused by there bemused reactions...it was so obvious they did NOT know what to make of it ;)

  • She fooled the shit out of those girls on the View.

  • This is a moment of perfection on so many levels that the remaining 430 characters could not begin to sum up its genius. I mean, come on she is singing "i want to get married" to millions of housewives across The U.S. On the effing View. For God sakes that's on the the level of having Steven Colbert perform at the White House Correspondent's Dinner for the Republican party.

  • This is irony in action, if i was nellie i would have jumped at the chance to perform this fantastic tune! Shes not complicated, shes very straight up......pure brilliance

  • Nellie to Terry Gross: [This song] is a lament.... I wanted to get married, but I realize no matter what you want, it's kind of a fantasy... TG: So this wasn't a critique of [musical 'old standards']? NM: You can criticize something you strive for, and you can avoid something you dream about.

Nellie is funny, but complicated, like all of us. Not surprising that The View didn't really get her. "Getting" people takes a lot of intent listening, which is hard work for all of us, not just The View.

  • I love how sweet she seems in interview, but I know she could easily eat any of these women for breakfast. She's so witty live. She must have been gagging at the thought of performing on The View. But you know what they say, anything for publicity. We love you Nellie. :)

  • LOL, I love the line 'read Danielle Steele', hilarious.

  • I think it's hilarious that through most of the song, the ladies of the view are all "la la la, marriage, weee!" all smiling and stuff, and they seem to not realize that the song is completely tongue in cheek, and that Nellie, a pretty ardent feminist, is pretty much knocking the institution of marriage. You can kind of sense when they catch on, when their smiles fade and the one crosses her arms.

  • haha, i was wondering what was going on with all the obliviousness. i remember listening to this song mad long ago. and i'm like "why are these ladies so chipper, wasn't this song sarcastic?". lol. got 'em!

  • @bearza1030 actually the one who crosses her arms (joy behar) has been living with her boyfriend for almost three decades without getting married

  • Interesting, I did not know!

  • She's a lot smarter than the hosts of the show.

  • No you don't you want a little dog!!!

  • She is quite funny.

  • This is a really good performance.

  • possibly one of the most ironic events in recent history

  • @saiksia yes

  • magic singer, she has all the qualities of a super-star. Her voice and intelligent are one of the best qualities of her which are brulliant.

  • she is soooo beyond the worn out nag bitches that host the view. especially the repulican/nazy young blond host tart bich.

  • Elizabeth Hasselback isn't 1/10 as bad as Rosie O'Donnell was. In fact she has mellowed out since Rosie left.

  • God god I cant stand the bitches on the View, McKay is the bomb diggity on the other hand.

  • :) this is song is fantastic

    she's fantastic.

  • I just saw her for the first time on the TED TALKS site. What a beautiful voice, reminiscent of the great 1`940's torch song singers but with a wonderful sense of humor!! I love her!

  • It's so obvious that Star Jones didn't listen to the song before interviewing Nelli. Stupid!

  • shes so talented,!!.. even though star jones always emphasizes shes a lawyer! and educated,>>>>,God i want to barf every time i see her fuckn face!!!!!! shes a fuckn idiot>( i hope her staples break, so she gets fat again!!!!,,,,, nellie is so talented , she shines.. her talent so much.. look at all of them,.. they wish they could be talented as she is ,, their vaginas are in a rut.. because of jelousy!!

  • very good pizzatarian, !and whats on the menu tonite! IM HUNGY

  • amygdala3290 are you bipolar?

  • very much soo..protectboy!

  • After listening to this song, Star Jones got married to the gay guy.

  • UGH. That is the only thing I can say to properly express my absolute disdain for these stupid women on The View. The beginning to this video was possibly the most cringe-worthy thing I have ever watched. Also, the end was just too much for me. These women shouting "SO GOOD, SO GREAT" was just absolutely awful.

  • correct

  • agreed

  • She looks so old for her age....not to say she isn't beautful but she does look mature for her age.

  • Nellie is a first class satirist - even her look is part of her satire.

  • Nellie is amazing...such a great song!

  • hilarious that she'd play this song on the view. absolutely hilarious

  • Here's the thing... In an interview with NPR, Nellie said that she means just want she says, in that she's not trying to make a statement, just say that something things should be simple..

  • FUCK THE MOTHERFUNKIN' VIEW...all those bitches are stupid.and this song?they took it so literally that you can't even help but notice the lyrics and the message are completely OVER the hosts' heads! "i wanna get married, does she?!". you're completely ignorant.she's addressing the fact that society since well, forever, has pre-conditioned women into believing that wife=submission

  • Joy obviously got the satire and seemed to relish it - watch her expression at the end of the song.

  • She got it, but I don't think she was relishing it. She was embarrassed and was attempting to distance herself from the other hosts. But she PERSONALLY felt Nellie barb too.

  • someone BOMB the view

star jones is a doornail ahhhhhhhhhhhhh married you dumb hoe

  • genius yet attractive!!!

  • LOOK! FAT STAR JONES! ten points.

  • Is this 2009 or 1939? It will be interesting to see where Nellie's talent takes her. Is there a place for her in this century?

  • You should hear some of her other songs...they are more "pop" sounding. She has ecclectic stlyes of songs

  • What a collection of fucking idiot women. Jesus.......poor Nellie having to deal with them. Man, you can just watch her get more uncomfortable with each question these dopey broads ask her.

  • You are totally TOTALLY missing the point. She joked about not getting naked to earn 5 stars from Rolling Stone b/c image means more to RS than music. C'mon...that's been an obvious fact for years now. And her reaction to the Nora comment was perfect. What a dumb, retarded question to ask, 'does your album title have to do with Nora Jones album title?'. WTF?! Why would Nellie's career choices revolve around Nora f'ing Jones. Nellie's jabbing at that dumb women for asking a dumb question.

  • Ditto on all of that, except for the album title - I did read somewhere that it was a play on the Norah Jones title, and it would fall in line with her sense of humor perfectly, I would say it's quite plausible that it was intentional atleast in part.

  • nellie mckay is a badass

  • Nellie is great, and her interview on Fresh Air is wicked awesome

  • shes only 19

  • she's 25

  • sorry

  • this also makes me think of the french and saunders skit where Jennifer Saunders does Doris Day. Check it out!

  • French and Saunder rule!

  • Duh! Isnt that song "I wanna get married totally sarcastic"? Star jones is such a dumbass! LOL!

  • those 4 broads don't get it

  • She's amazing, i love her,

Totally natural, i understand her song, it's like a 'sometimes' XD

  • lol.... idiots.... Nellie's great

  • Yeah, that was totally lost on them.

  • I like the Norah, who?

They don't seem to understand the satire.

  • awesome performance, especially since shes pretty much laughing at all those women through the lyrics of that song and everyone claps. Nellie is awesome.

  • The fact that she winds up on a show like this in the first place is the strangest irony of all. No wonder she is not a star. You think the target audience of the show are going to buy the album?

  • So true.

  • The entire song is so tongue in cheek. I was surprised that anyone wouldn`t see the irony.

  • OMG I can't stop loving this...

  • I think I read somewhere that this song wasn't ironic, and that everyone thought she was being really sarcastic, and she just genuinely wanted to get married!

  • I like how she's being obnoxious but she's sort of embarrassed about it at the same time. And it's hilarious how they assume the song is sincere.

She makes me feel horrible about myself; I'm 19 and I can't imagine being as badass as she is in ten years, let alone now.

  • This wonderful girl has a sense of irony that far surpasses her young age!

  • stupid shoes...

  • She does look like the First Lady, but I think that she is being somewhat ironic about the whole thing! ;-) Something that the interviewers only really get by the time she sings "my shallow life"!

  • I don't understand why she looks like she came straight of the 90's?

  • i love how shes making fun of all these women and yet they continue to smile and clap...except Joy...she fcking gets it

    priceless

  • I love how the smile is wiped off of star's face. priceless.

  • life is fucking hilarious.

  • You obviously don't listen to Suzanne Vega at all, because she sounds nothing like this girl.

  • I love this song. I had my first dance as husband and wife to this song. Its very special to us.. obviously...

  • They should have let her sing " Mother of Pearl"

  • yeah, she is obviously brighter than the mile-a-minute-show-biz-women that clearly love her but unfortunately misinterpret the song a little.

  • 1) joy definitely understood it. i knew she would, joy never lets me down...

    and 2?

GET. those sneakers. off. of that beautiful piano. O. M. G. i don't care how clean they are!

  • She is so much smarter than those women interviewing her......

    awesome stuff.

  • She's amazing :)

  • oh the irony!!! i love this.

  • This has to be the funniest clip I've seen on Youtube yet. Lol.

Makes me love Nellie even more than I already do :)

  • These women must be pretty damn embarrassed at not listening to the song before they asked if she wants to get hitched. Oopsies.

  • let loose you miserable bitches. she's funny. i wet myself.

  • the video blips out/skips the word "you" when she says a "sugar cake for you to take to work in the morning" thus messing up (censoring?) one of the most sarcastic lines. And sissyduck is right - how totally awkward to have to sing with them in her face like that.

  • I go to the school she graduated!!! and my teachers had her aswell

  • What the hell are you talking about?

  • what a weird set up. how awkward.

  • Nellie Mckay is like the anti-hasselbeck.

  • whos that black dude

  • I wish she would have sung Mother of Pearl.

  • She hadn't written it yet. This clip is from 2004.

  • The clip was from 1999.

  • Elizabeth Hasselback wasn't on the View until 2003, and Nellie's album came out in 2004. Can't be from 1999.

  • Well, going by the fact that she was 19 and is 27 now so...8 years ago, around 2001? Maybe it will remain a mystery.

  • Not a "Fact". Wikipedia says she's 27 but that is a less than reliable source. An article on NPR, a more reliable source, says she was 19 as of Feb 26, 2004 which makes her 24-25 now. That makes this video from 2004.

  • Don't assume i obtained this information from wikipedia. What i stated is what IMDB said; considering how they obtain their information, i would say their information is quiet accurate. Upon further reading into, she is 25 according to yahoo music, whichever one is more accurate.

  • A little more research reveals she was born Eleanora Marie on Apr 13, 1984 in London England but she grew up in New York City. That combined with the fact her first album was released in 2004 when she as, as stated in the video, 19, I believe that, without a doubt, she is not 27 but 25. Case closed.

  • So the same thing her yahoo biography states on her age and origin ^^

  • she looks so nervous

  • I love Nellie!!!!

  • fucking great, but fucking gay how those four unintelligent uber-cunts are sitting beside the motherfucking piano the whole time!

  • Nellie's amazing (artistically, politically...).

Bought all of her CDs & gonna buy the next. Thanks for posting.

  • Is this the show they parodied on The Simpsons in that episode where all the black woman would say is "I'm talking downtown!" (The episode was Jaws Wired Shut)

  • Yes, yes it is

  • 1984

  • Actually she was born 1967 and she's half black....or half Japanese????

  • both

  • she was born in 1982 . . . so I think that makes her 25 now, right? This must have been awhile ago.

  • Except that she was born April 13, 1984.

    So, 25? Not so much.

  • Doing a Google search for her "Nellie McKay birthday" (without quotation marks" returns several results saying her birthday is April 13, 1982. That would make her 25.

  • So, I guess no one went to her official website, then, eh? 'Cause according to the site, it's 1984... Anyway, I'm not arguing about this anymore. Do your homework!

  • It is well exposed that she lied about her age. Her father and the british government confirmed she was born in 1982. She herself responded to the accusation by saying you should always lie about your age! Anyway, does it matter how old she is?

  • I think the record label also encouraged her to say she was a teenager. Makes for a better PR campaign ... new teen sensation.

  • The funny thing is that everyone thinks that she is being ironic with this song but when Terry Gross asked her about it on Fresh Air she said that she wrote because she genuinely wanted to get married. I guess as Terry said on A Prairie Home Companion recently, "Irony is dead. Sincerity is the new irony."

  • People see and hear what they want to see and hear. And sometimes they even know they're doing it. They do it on purpose just to be that way. Insanity.

  • This girl is so charming and beautiful. The women on the View are so stupid though. Just grinning like idiots.

  • It's positively devlish the way she laughs "with" these ladies from the beginning. They're so clueless... Wow - very smart, funny and lovely all at once. She's great!

  • Man, she's SOOOOOOOO talented! Love her!!!

  • I'm sorry, but she is not allowed to be popular. She actually sings. She does not merely shout. She does not shout angrily. She does not sound like she is in a domestic dispute. She does not pass off "ultra-loud vibrato" as "singing". There aren't obnoxiously loud war drums in the back ground. She doesn't act girlish. She's not trying to sell cd's by wearing a miniskirt and showing off her legs. She is an enemy of the state. This must be stopped.

  • so you should listen to all the bitches like beyoncé or rihanna.

    nellie mckay is the best.

she's a so incredible lovely young woman.

  • Lol, no kidding... waitaminnit, I got a thumbs down. Somebody is humour/reading comprehension impaired.

  • haha! I think we all know you were being sarcastic. I agree whole heartily with you!

  • lmao you are awesome

  • beautiful

  • They probably were only "prepped" (on paper) prior to the show-taping ONLY of the song-title-- either chosen off the 'track-listing' on the back of the CD, by any one of the four "co-hosts" or by Nelly herself? Interesting to ponder haha

  • what's edited at the 3:54 mark? (after the "sugar cake" line in the song? I don't have this double CD yet)

  • it's so obvious that none of them have ever bothered listening to her album... that's professionalism for you

  • I know.. and hats off to her for managing to perform with them all sat right next to her grinning inanely.. seriously they never stop 0_o

  • they have no idea what this song is about

  • listen to the NPR interview of Nellie Mckay with Terry Gross. it is amazing, it was on 11/23/07
