I think that octomber 1956 started as a popular uprising due to excesses of Stainism . Imre Nagy was a communist. People wanted good communists insted bad communissts. But, sadly, it degerenerated in a hideus counterrevoilution.

Well since I'm only 40 I didn't have first hand experiance of the 1950's. But my Father and his older brother did. Their Father (my Grandfather) was arrested and beaten because he was trying feed his family and purchased a pig and killed it in the basement. When I was i little kid he was in a wheelchair and shaking from the beatings. He died when I was 8 so I never really had any quality time with him. That is why my Uncle was invalved in the REVOLUTION and fled to the US.

Well I couldn't be with him because of the wheelchair, but I remember he was afraid of any uniformed officer especially Russians. He was beaten by Hungarian Communists that were dressed in AVH uniform that was designed after the Russians. The AVH was the political police organization of the communist party. They were dismembered after 1956. The new organization didn't beat, torture and release, they just imprisoned and executed anybody that didn't agree with communizm.
