  • Oh god... I went to camp this year and had to spend a night alone in the woods (within yelling distance of others), this one scared me so badly... I kept hearing it in the distance and had no idea what it was.

  • I'm so glad I found this. This exactly what I'm hearing all night. And I've seen the owl before. I'm also in NH and I'm almost positive there is a nest right on our property! I'm gonna have to get some footage.

  • I have these in my backyard in NH too. I got a good look at one last night sitting in the tree, and it definitely look like a barred owl.

I thought it was a barn owl from the sounds it was making, but it looks nothing like it.

  • I have found an expert from the NH Audubon. Here is his feedback, "The footage showed a juvenile barred owl doing its raspy fledgling food-begging call. Very common after they leave their nest in June or July."

  • I think this call is because of disturbing them. They are telling the others that danger is near. They think your dangerous. I have barred owls in the woods at my house in Massachusetts. I hear them mainly in October and March. "Who cooks for you, who cooks for youuuuuuu!" is the sound of the barred owl. The female is usually higher pitched. Did you have barred owl nest near your house? If so please post it. I LOVE owls!

  • Thanks JimmyJoeLard. In the past 2 weeks, we have not heard from these adolescents. Think Mom & Dad have kicked them out by now?

  • Yes, they're Barred Owls.

If this were springtime, I'd say the sound is Mom calling from the nest asking for a food delivery from Dad. By now, I guess it's the adolescents, hanging out in the trees, asking Mom and Dad for food. The kids are still learning to hunt, and not yet fully self-sufficient.

  • Pardon the bumpy camera and lighting. The skeeters were in full force!
