  • @AndrthegreiT I was thinking the same thing.

  • tolkien is like the only original writer. now anything fantasy related these days is just a rip off of lord of the rings. well, mostly video game wise anyways.

  • I feel uneasy giving you a criticism based on your achievement of any unknown criteria and can only tell you that I know what I like, and I didn't really like this. I'm sorry, but without negative criticism, we wouldn't improve ourselves. Tolkien's works wouldn't be what they are.

I think you presented very scattered threads of data, and made little or no effort to marry any of them up.

If you didn't like Tolkien, you'd not have picked him as the subject, so I think you should try again.

  • what can you say?this guy is awesome he made my childhood!

  • Alan lee. Not allen :>

  • im with stupid ---> undoproductions

  • Yeah for sure.. and Snow white and the 12 dwarfs

This is another suppostion that a Great work of art, is from a child story.

Heard it already and it tryed to ruin Pink Floyds best Album, The Dark Side of the moon.

There is no connection what so ever.

There are many enemies of the Tolkien societies and this what follows when having this kind of enemies.

  • "The Ring of the Nibelungen" is a great work of art, and Wagner was clearly a man of incredible value. We should not judge men for their beliefs as long as they do not affect the lives of others. Tolkien was indeed inspired by some great works, but they were countless... And he gave to humanity works that address both anthropology and philosophy. I am in no way supporter of any racist perspective, and I personally extracted the idea of the universal fate of humanity.

  • Forget Racism... First of all

The Ring of the Nibelungen was not originally Richard Wagners work.. it's a 12th Century poem.

Secondly.. Do you know that Tolkien has some 20+ books just on Middle Earth? He did not create The Lord of the Rings, he created Middle Earth first with 1100 years of History in it. He Even wrote two Laguages Quenya Sindarin. Countless Characters and Names, battles and stories about each.

  • Look, I don't hate Ron, I'm just trying to inform you of the facts. Middle earth was around at least HUNDREDS of years, perhaps even THOUSANDS of years before Tolkien. It's from Norse myth.

And you are wrong about Wagner's Ring Trilogy. He adapted material from the poem, and then Ron took Wagner's adapted material and made it his own. Do your research!

  • Ok then, lets suppose you are right. Middle Earth was made before tolkien. But, Was Iluvatar? Fingolfin? Maehdros? Turgon? Thingol? Gondolin? Angband? Menegroth? Doriath? Valinor? The House of Hurin and the Sad tale of his Children? of Tour? of beren and Luthien? All the battles??

Read Tolkiens work before you see the movies and judge ;) Tolkien published only 3 books on The Lord of the Rings, some 15 more where just on the History of HIS Middle Earth.

  • Lord of the Rings then was the last great story to put an end to the Evil in Middle Earth.

A WHOLE World which took him all half of his life and you come telling me that J.R.R Tolkien copied it from Wizard of Oz?

Great video there! Keep up! bet that gilgamesh73 was your teacher then :P

  • Wagner himself refered to Ring des Nibelungen as "The Ring Trilogy." Look it up.

  • 'both Rings have a common ancestry and, as ingredients of a mythological setting, have certain symbolic similarities. But it is quite clear that Tolkien's work owes nothing to Der Ring des Nibelungen, and it is impossible to draw comparisons between the two works. The few similarities that there are operate as faint and disparate echoes of one another, coming from a distant and common source'

Essay by Famous Writer David Harvey

google: ring des Nibelungen lord of the rings, 6th link

  • Mr. Harvey makes his life off of Tolkien criticism. Of course he would say that.

  • if any of you wanna know where hes buried its wolvercote cemetery in oxford england. just follow the signs in the verge when entering the cemetery to his grave.

  • 1973 - saddest year to me xD

  • In my personal comment,I believe Tolkien is the best narrator of the world,THE BEST OF THE BESTS .

  • not enough info x]

  • he was a legend he knew more 4 diffrent langs and more or less created his own langue in lord of the rings i think he was the master of writes lol

  • I don't know what the specs were for what you had to do for the project, but I think I can see why you got a bad mark. If you kept with the traditional biography format (starting with birth, ending with death), it would have been less confusing. Also, the titles over the pictures weren't so good. It would have been better if you showed the titles separately or down on the bottom (like a subtitle). I'm not sure if red was the best color choice either.

With time, this could be a great project.

  • J. R. R. Tolkien was sent back because of catching trench fever, not developing PTSD.

  • PTSD was not even recognized as a condition back in WW1 - only when soldiers returned back from the gulf war in the late century with 'Gulf Syndrome', the medical community became more aware of this condition.

  • Was that Treebeard with tolkien in his last photo? I'm just off to finish LOTR now, Im at the fight in the Shire at the very end...

  • Interesting content, but over use of cheesy transitions, much better to stick to dissolves fades and the odd wipe or swipe at a push. Rostrum your photos / artwork and add a few pans or zooms / pull focus to add more depth to your still images. good luck...

  • excellent video!

  • excellent video!

  • Well in words of why you got a bad mark. You skipped around a lot and you could have explained a bit more. Other than that love it

  • ive heard of this battle and that canadian one similar to this both were verry scary

  • I think that J R R Tolkien was one of the most influentual writers of the modern age, and people shold respect his work young and old. Look at what he has caused. A multi-million book and movie series and endless merchandise!

  • I agree 100%!!!!

  • J.R.R Tolkien for ever, one of the best writers

  • Yeah exactly!

  • I would have given you a big fat A.

  • Me too!

  • why are you talking about the war first, and only later about his birth and early life?

  • The reason that you got a low grade is because you really didn't provide any valuable information. All I was able to gather from your video was that there was a man named J.R.R. Tolkien who was born, he fought in World War I, he wrote some books (which ones?), he had a brother, apparently got married to a woman named Edith at some point and then he died.

  • indeed.

if you are attempting to summarise someone's life in a relatively short amount of time (and i imagine it would be someone worth looking at, who has had some profound effect on humanity or people's lives), you really need to consider his achievements (or failures if relevant) in some depth. i mean, there must be some extraordinary reason for you choosing this person over billions of others, so capitalize on that, use the existing information... don't just make a timeline with pictures.

  • You probably got marked down cause you got all your pictures and info from wikipedia. Try reading some books.

  • ok, biographies are not slideshows! The reason you were marked down was because you explained absolutely NOTHING about how he created middle earth. if it was meant to be a biography then it would have been better to include when he worked on his masterpieces and list them. Please don't just talk about LOTR, for he maid various other stories. Less pictures more info!

  • R.I.P. my good Mr Tolkien!

  • Bravo c'est une bien joli vidéo, jen ai appris sur tolkien .. thx for uploading !

  • the pictures by alan lee are amazing

  • yeah... it was succesful

  • Well, it didn't really have a whole lot of information in it. And you didn't cite any sources either. It was an all right video, but it could have been much better.

  • Excelente,just excelent.I like it very much

  • this says nothing about what he did

thats why you got a bad grade

  • Also....was this highschool, or college...? Did people pick on you after you did this video?

  • Well, I agree you must put some more information, but you MADE a video, and others who say it must be better haven't done that. If you know it better, then make a video.

  • I´m sorry, but it is a bit too "rookie". It has a good meaning, but it doesn´t work out. I still do like it, it captures the most important.

  • Actually, Tolkiens father was supposed to come back to England but sadly he died, but Tolkien didn't leave south africa after his dad died.

Nice video, could've have had more imformation, the music was awesome though.

  • Meh, it was ok, I'd give it a B- or a C+.

  • I like this video!

  • very uninformative. worth a bad grade, honestly. just random pictures--and your captions cover the pictures!!

  • loved the song. Evenstar :)

  • very few informations

  • He was born in South Africa Not Africa to be exact.

  • He was British, his parents were British. They moved to SA because his dad got a job there and when his Dad died they returned back home to England. If a dog is born in a barn does it make him a horse?

  • Good effort, there.

  • riveting.

  • Good job. You totally showed your teacher that you can cut and paste pictures off the internet. That's all you should need for a good mark on a project, right?

  • Further more, you haven't got any information about when he did what; Wrote his books, made his languages, got his kids etc. etc. Nor have you got the fact that he was a good friend of CS Lewis, author of the Narnia-series, and the two had many ideas that reflects in the similarities in both their books.

  • It was a school project with certain criteria, i also had a time limit. None of the subjects you pointed out needed to be in there.

  • but the fact that he made up all those languages is quite important! u can tell what a genius he was.. and his friendship with cs lewis was important too.. And the fact that he taugh English Lit at Oxford university, or why he wrote LOTR... (because he was disappointed england had no mythology of its own and decided to make one for her..). if u have included all these in ur video ( it wouldnt take long!) it would have been perfect

  • Agree...

  • Ah well, its too late now, but the written report did include his friendship with C.S. Lewis, so thats why i wasn't really worried

  • Well said. I liked Humphrey Carpenter's "J.R.R. Tolkien a biography."

  • E.g. you don't EVEN mention that he created several languages known as "The Toungues of Arda," such as Quenya - High-elven, Sindarin - Grey-elven, Khûsdûl - dwarves' toungue and Entish - language of the living trees.

  • Nice you've got his stamp at the end, but it really haven't got much to do with Tolkien himself...

  • nice^^
