what is the best scale(S) for lead on this

@lookylooky2006 If you are playing the 5-1-4 progression in A. Those are all dominant chords. It could be both Amajor or Amin. It all depends on what style you're playing. If its traditional surf rock that you are looking for, then the natural minor scale in A would be my choice to go with. The difference in maj/min is the 3-6-7th steps of the scale. If you were playing 5-1-4 in A major, F# pentatonic would sound best being the relative minor scale to the A major progression.

mainly chord progressions. and that would include key signatures too.

learn it as numbers. all my theory didn't help me for shit, i just started thinking of the frets as numbers and memorized the intervals that sound pleasing, and after a while you'll just kinda naturally jump around and not feel out of place

just pick any given spot on the fretboard and start changing intervals to find ones that'll fit in your progression, then keep looking. eventually your hands'll just kinda jump those gaps naturally without having to give it any real thought.

remember, theory is nice, but most guitarists who know it will admit that once you've learned it it's perfectly alright to simply throw it out the window

How about compressing the hell out of it to get a good "popping" effect from the picking? Then a little reverb and either a balanced tone or a midrange scooped tone.
