  • his voice is just... No other artist has made anything like it.

  • mutherfucking Weazel landlord!.

  • Elliot Smith has inspired Me a lot through My High School days, I wish I could shake his hand but in time I will.

  • i found elliott smith through a version of this song by qotsa. its an ok cover but the original is always gonna be better. now the only two bands i really listen to now are qotsa and elliot smith. this is still my favorite elliott smith song.

  • It's scary how well this guy could capture the flavor of particular depressed state in one song. I recall a Leonard Cohen line "Even damnation is poisoned with rainbows" - hah - seems Elliott knew about that - his music seemed to be mostly about finding the beauty in life, no matter where you are in it. I think that's pretty cool if you're a person who is haunted by darkness a lot. It lets you know that you are not alone in the dark, and what a precious gift that is.

  • christian brothers is a good brandy, pretty sure that's were he got the title

  • Now I know a big inspiration for Coma Cinema.

  • Crispin Glover's gonna take him down.

  • @fryfry377 Now thats humour! -laughs-

  • end the tension and listen to this masterpiece......

  • @LofiCactus86 Thank you.

  • OK, time out. I certainly don't want to tune out the lyrics. I was trying to make a point to someone who doesn't want to listen to Elliott anyway. My mistake.

  • Why would anyone want to "tune out the lyrics"?

If you need to tune out Elliots lyrics, you need to be listening to someone else.

Maybe Celine Dion is more to your tastes.

  • Dude if you have to tune out the lyrics you need to switch over to green day

  • the drumming and the transition at about 3:17 really get me. This song sends shivers down my spine.

  • this song is fucking daaaaaark.

  • Was he related to will smith.... If so what a talented family

  • @elburrogordo are you that big of retard, fuck me

  • @begalthegreat i was kidding you doof, get jiggy with it

  • @elburrogordo really?....REALLY?!

  • The great ones always die young.

  • OK, one last comment.

    He wrote instrumentals, too.

  • Besides, the music is gorgeous. If you must, you can tune out the lyrics and enjoy the music alone.

Then again, try giving Independence Day a shot. It's not smiley-face happy (thank God), but it definitely shows an appreciation for life.

Elliott was a major artist. He understood blackness, but he got a lot of mileage out of the grey areas as well. And as a painting classmate of mine once said, "There are some beautiful greys."

  • @Malocclusiontenfour i used to only wear grey shirts does that make me grey?

  • Elliott's music is dark, but it isn't monochromatic. In the case of this song, the message is more important than any discomfort it causes. There is hope and humor in his songs if you're willing to listen. Many people could be letting their knowledge of his death color their reactions to his work. A lot of people have heard his music before learning he was dead, and that may be the best introduction to him. They had the opportunity to appreciate the music on its own terms.

  • @Malocclusiontenfour much like Kurt Co(cock the barrel)bain.

  • @nworbrelytthefirst Tasteful.

  • @Malocclusiontenfour

Fucking hell, intelligent comments on Youtube. I feel like I owe someone twenty quid.

  • Typo alert-- "an issue in itself and quality varies."

Yes, Virginia, there is catharsis. I personally can go for two years without crying, and that is part of my own illness. When you don't get your feelings out, they stay inside and fester. Freud said that depression is anger turned inward. Any negative feeling that has nowhere to go can turn into depression. Get it out.

  • First of all, I absolutely agree about counselling. Of course, counselling is not always affordable. There are some community programs out there, but the red tape is an issue in itself quality varies. If you can't get a professional, at least try to find a sympathetic friend. Lacking that, write in a journal. The point is to get it out. Huh. I believe this is what they call catharsis.

  • In other words the recordings of the last sighs of a dead person is probably not the most constructive thing to listen to if you're feeling down.

  • not this particular song, but in general, there's a basic worldview, a winter or autumn perspective, shared by romantic period writers, where every moment is a tragedy. It's easy to get lost in this feeling, and music like this while feeling good, doesn't help. There's actually no such thing as catharsis. The more practice you get crying the better you get at crying. If this music speaks to you, make sure you're talking to a counselor about these feelings. LOL PSA TO ELLIOTT SMITH FANS. BE SAFE.

  • people maybe shouldn't cover this music. or listen to it. it's very beautiful but there's something wrong with it on a very deep level. it comes from a very dark place and drags you into it. you can't live your life mourning every second that passes.

  • @bvolsky I appreciate your comment, and you make a valid point. My sister keeps telling me ES is the reason I stay depressed. I say that's my brain chemistry's fault, not his. When you're already in that dark place, Elliott will keep you company when the people around you don't even want to deal with you.

  • @bvolsky Everything is relative, however, and one has to judge for oneself how much one can take. I personally cannot bear to listen to Everything Means Nothing To Me, because it sounds to me like someone deliberately willing himself away from life.

  • @bvolsky I'm not sure this particular song mourns every second that passes. The self-titled album used addiction as a metaphor for relationships, and I can't help but think this song is narrated by a sexual predator. Christian Brothers is a brand of alcohol, but it is also the name of a religious group known for sexual abuse at one of its orphanages in the '80. He himself is tormented, guilty, sorting out fake and real concern... and at the same time is luring someone to "come here by me."

  • @bvolsky I certainly don't want anyone to stop listening to Elliott. He is too important. I know there is a temptation to psychoanalyze everything song-- obviously I am guilty of that myself. I hope he will be remembered primarily for his music, and secondarily because by all accounts he was a decent person. But I also hope biographers will study his life so we all may learn something about child abuse/ depression/ addiction/ suicide and be able to prevent future tragedies.

  • Only Elliott could have written this. Only he could turn so much pain into so much beauty.

  • check this out its a great cover of christian brothers (copy and paste)... Queens of the Stone Age-Christian Brothers (Sick,Sick,Sick)

  • this song is about christian brothers brandy and sled dogs

  • i sure do:) butt u just dont care and have a "gaiest name ever award" winning name sorry for u u didnt know this

  • @equap lsd is a terrible drug kids...

  • Remember y'all that the word emo comes from the word emotional... and this is very emotional but not in the "Mom won't pay for my cell phone bill. Life isn't fair." sense. It's more like a vibe that grabs you by the guts and doesn't let go.

  • I discovered this song 4 years ago, that's the day Elliott became my personal hero. I've been listening to this song at least once a day since then, i can't get tired of it.

  • too bad its true, i mean the guy was emo basically his entire career

  • @bigjohnny12345678 He wasn't "emo". He was mentally distressed. Fuck off, dude.

  • @bigjohnny12345678 You must like it in the butt....

  • @bigjohnny12345678 Art doesnt have to be happy to be beautiful

  • The Cursed Arrows cover of this is pretty rad too, if you want to hear what it'd sound like soaked in 90's grunge.

  • Queens of the Stone Age blows even before they made the shitty cover of this song.

  • yep, nice song, but QOTSA cover is better, still well done to this guy for writing it

  • @bigjohnny12345678 Queens of the stone age butchered this song. They also disrespected him incredibly with wrist cutting gestures and the like.

  • @VincentPrice111 come on dude u dont get the point of Queens of the stone age he did it becäuse little kiddies do things like thät do u wännä be the one who is pro "cutting ur wrist generätion" i dont änd so is josh thäts whi he didi it

my keyboard was broken because like a mirror it felt how ugly u are and just went broke

    get this

  • @VincentPrice111 If you had listened to the studio version of the the Queens cover, you would have realized they didn't butcher the song.

  • @StareLikeAHoodlum Well, they didn't do nearly as well regardless. Disrespectful bastards.

  • @VincentPrice111 They wouldn't cover his song if they didn't respect him.

  • @StareLikeAHoodlum word, queens studio version cover is awesome

  • You people are acting like children. This is a pretty good song, but I heard the OSI cover first, and I happen to prefer that one. I'll just go get fitted for my devil horns, then.

  • @DudemanofAwesome and by "devil horns" you mean your brainless cranium?

  • @cordfluidnevoie Republican.

  • @DudemanofAwesome The Queens of the Stone Age version is the best imo. What is OSI though I'd like to check out another? I also suggest the QotSA one if you've never listened to it.

  • lets all go kill the queens of the stone age.

  • @MrReidLynn WOOHHAA Hooah

  • @cordfluidnevoie we just fuck em up real bad.

  • @MrReidLynn

    Good luck with that ahaha

  • @TheJurneyMan whst is "ahaha"?

  • @MrReidLynn

Good luck having the Queens of the Stone Age killed. If you can get past Josh Homme then all the best to you ;)

  • @TheJurneyMan if that's the thick necked lead singer that made the narrow minded comment about Elliott before he ruined his song, then I should have no problem removing his head from those muscular shoulders. he gels his hair. nobody likes a buff song writer.

  • eek! for me this is new stuff because i didn't get into Elliott Smith until XO. It's great to go back to his earlier stuff. Thanks for posting.

  • Queens of the stone age cover was much better.

  • @lovettodding your opinion is stupid and wrong

  • @FuttBucker667 No, see that comment was stupid. And for the record opinions can't be wrong.

  • @lovettodding there was nothing stupid about my comment. and of course opinions can be wrong. you can have an opinion on the earth being flat, or the QOTSA's cover is better but youre still wrong

  • @FuttBucker667 Because my opinion wasn't the same as yours it was wrong on your standars. Grow the fuck up and get over it, seriously.

  • @lovettodding dude, the queens of the stone age cover sucks, its just fact. jesus. dont have to get all pissy.

  • @FuttBucker667 Nope. It's 10 times better in my opinion. And, "Dude" I don't know how old you are, but i'm 13 and feel more mature than you. Drop-it.

  • @lovettodding queens cover is just a joke.. did you really think that load of crap is better?

  • @cordfluidnevoie Yes, I do think it's better.

  • @cordfluidnevoie wether one likes it better is a matter of opinion. The cover is a nice peace of music, fucktard

  • i think elliot smith knew too much

  • @hiyabuddy69

    yep.

  • Respond to this video... "No Bad Dream Fucker's gonna boss me Around"...hey, this song is really punk... I'd cover it if I were Josh Homme. that's a no-brainer. OK. bye, kids.

  • @hiyabuddy69 yeaaa, see, knowing things like this now, looking back, was dreamworks really following him? and did he really kill himself? yea fucked shit right there lol

  • Josh Homme Interview 2008, now, I want everyone to type that first part into the little search bar at the top. You will then sit down and watch for about 13:00 minutes. You will learn how Joshua Homme feels about guitars, music, and scarred individuals. Thank you come again.

  • I miss you:(

  • @loonypalooza Blasphemy!

  • not gonna lie, I prefer the Queens cover.

  • @loonypalooza Same here

  • @loonypalooza that's the most ridiculous statement ever uttered. The singer from Queens has no falsetto voice and he mocks the song the whole time he sings it. Not only that, but there's no sincerity. Awful cover... if you prefer it maybe you should invest in a hearing aid.

  • @Lawlsrsly My mother is a muffing shooting child molesting dragon from Pluto. Now that is a ridiculous statement. To each his own man. I wasn't bashing Smith at all man, I just prefer the Queens of the Stone Age cover cause it has a bit more instrumental complexity to it. Homme doesn't mock the song, he respects the guy which is the only reason why he covers it in the first place.

  • @loonypalooza He butchered the sound of that song, if you ask me.

Covers are rarely better (if ever) then the original.

One of the few exceptions I've seen, is Elliott Smith's cover of Revolution by the beatles, with the help of Heatmiser.

Having read Lawlsrsly's comment, I detected the same thing from them, Elliott covers fail mostly because no one can beat his voice, the mocking and lack of sincerity I also felt as well.

There's many reasons to do a cover without respecting who did it.

  • @VincentPrice111 I've been referring to the "album version" when it comes to preferring the song. That live version has terrible sound, Also, their is no mocking tone when Homme is singing Christian Brother, it's just him trying to hit those difficult notes man. Come on of course no one is going to "do" Smith better than Smith. I mean, to Elliott Smith, this song meant something. To Homme it's a song by someone who's made music that he respects.

  • @loonypalooza Just a P.S upon reviewing the cover video, one of them makes a wrist cutting gesture, while laughing about it right before performing the cover of this song.

If you think that's sincere then, well, just listen to his mocking tone when he's singing.

  • @VincentPrice111 I still prefer the Queens Version better though. Check out the album version. Also, Elliott Smith died 7 years ago, time to move on. He's dead now and there is nothing that's gonna change that. I love John Bonham, but you don't hear me arguing with people saying "oh that's not very nice, you shouldn't make fun of the fact that he died in a pool of his own vomit". P.S All Along the Watchtower, the Hendrix cover is better than Dylan's; and I fucking love Bob Dylan.

  • @loonypalooza Damn, he's dead. I guess it IS time to move on, guess I should make beyond disrespectful gestures in comments in reference to him.

It's not like Elliott Smith died in demeaning way (Unless he did kill himself which is unlikely given the evidence) unless you count getting murdered to be his own problem.

Also I found it funny they needed two guitarists to play it.

and, Homme doesn't have a voice for that type of song.

I take it you aren't a big smith fan.

  • @VincentPrice111 I can't really say I'm a big fan, but I certainly respect the guy. I love Primus though, nice profile picture. Also, Homme struggles with this song for sure. Though they use two guitars to add complexity to it. Elliott's album version has two guitars in it anyway or at least two tracks if you listen closely. Also, I'm not saying you should make gestures of any sort, doesn't mean you can't do it. No ones ever gonna know what happened to Smith, so choose whatever death you want.

  • @loonypalooza Primus is awesome after all. (Elliott is my favorite solo guy and Primus is my favorite band)

Well, if it's not for sure then one shouldn't act if it is

I guess I choose murder because I'd like to think after all the bad shit he's been through that he actually did become happy and not suicidal, no drugs, refined sugar, no red meat and that he called his friend down to help with a new album, and his suicide note wasn't really something he would write.

  • @VincentPrice111 I agree with you on that, I suppose, it's quite difficult to stab yourself in the twice. Homme's insensitive but so am I so the gesture doesn't bother, plus the coroner's report leaned towards suicide, which is strange. It's a very Kurt Cobain like situation. Anyway dude, it was fun arguing with you, I love a good debate.

  • @loonypalooza As do I, oh well Elliott Smith was known to do some pretty weird/mean things so for all anyone knows he did commit suicide and called friends down to help with his album out of spite or something.

  • Ummm no he wasn't known to do "mean things", actually the opposite, he was known as a kind and self-effacing person. Every interview I've watched with him and everything I've heard anyone say about him can attest to that. Where are you getting your information from exactly?

  • "called friends to help with his album out of spite"

That doesn't sound like something he would do at all

  • @breeeegs I don't know him personally, I don't really think you do either. But he would collapse in front of peoples houses in order to get sympathy, and such. Loved the guy, seemed nice in interviews, but he was pretty eccentric, doing drugs in the back of taxi's and shit.

  • I saw you posted the same comment on another of his videos, where you say that he would collapse in front of people's house. I'm not calling you a liar or anything, but where are you getting this info from exactly? I've never read or heard anyone say that before, and I've done quite alot of research on Elliott Smith since he is one of my all-time favorite musicians, probably the most favorite out of all the music I listen to

  • @breeeegs My brother (Who did much research on him, with the help of something that compiled a lot of information from other internet sources) told me that. He also told me he threatened suicide to get out of a contract or something. Seems like a dick move to be honest.

  • maybe you should do your own research before drawing conclusions

  • @breeeegs I've read the damn sources. Is it so hard to believe that an extremely depressed introverted heroin addict would do things like that? I love his music as much as the next person who claims to be "his biggest fan" but that doesn't mean I'm blind to the fact that he had a lot demons.

  • No it is not hard to believe and I don't think anyone is blind to the fact that he had alot of demons. But you shouldn't just go throwing accusations out there like he was "mean" or using anecdotes without backing it up. That goes for any artist, not just Elliott Smith. I know you love his music and I am sure you have alot of respect for the man, as do I, and I wouldn't dare to question that

  • @breeeegs I don't think he was mean, but when you're as depressed as he was it's hard to care a lot about other things. I'm sure he didn't hurt anybody or do mean spirited things on purpose, if he did them at all.

  • agreed

  • @loonypalooza actually Elliott plays it all on one guitar. Even the solo is on one guitar. Watch a live version if you don't believe me. Regardless, I don't disagree that everyone has their own opinions on music, but the way QotSA performed the song mocked the original in more ways than one. If you want to cover a song that's fine but don't disrespect the song and the person who wrote it.

  • @Lawlsrsly The Album version is not the same as a live version. I'm aware that he plays the main riff on one guitar during live performances, but the album has two guitar tracks. You Elliott fans are so sensitive. Check out the album version, please, just have a listen. I'd link it to you but it's being a cunt, so type it in yourself.

  • @Lawlsrsly It's lucky I don't believe in an afterlife, as I'd hate to think of Smith being able to see the superiority complex much of his fanbase possesses.

  • Amazing song, heard the OSI cover and had to check out the original singer as I'd never heard of him. Bought the first 3 CD's straight away. Simply amazing song.

  • @gusonegusone Elliott Smith is amazing!!!!!

  • this guy sets the bar high.

  • @samesamething way high.

  • one of my favorite elliott songs

  • nice cover one of my favourite album covers

  • @QOTSAPT

    love josh homme

  • Oh my God....
