  • I have definitely heard better bodhrans, but I wouldn't call the playing bad. It seemed to me to be a pretty good demonstration of what an moderatly skilled noobie could do with a little practice. Not bad, not innovative, but entertaining and informative. As far as the bodhran goes, they are not selling a professional-level bodhran, so it's not going to sound like a professional bodhran. The company is, after all, called "Mid-East," not "Ireland".

  • Bad bodhran being played badly.

Why has this video got so many hits???!!!

  • @Cryptoenigma because this was one of the best bodhran players of his time. no soundengineers then. can you do any better? I can. Can you make your own Bodhran? I can. Welcome to Irish Trad.

  • Bad bodhran being played badly.

  • caraca! o Jaiminho tocando o bodhran! Deve ser pra evitar a fadiga!

  • JM&J that is some fine playing.

  • Jesus that beater is like a baseball bat hahaha

  • Played in a most traditional way.

  • SHIT this is why bodhran has a bad name

  • thats amazing!!!

  • Que paia __ __ ''

  • very good player

  • chuck norris's dad!!!!!!

  • :D *blown away*

  • uncle matrix ftw!! ^^

  • Why do people dislike videos? I mean if they're outrageously bad but funny you should like them right???? And if they're insanely amazing you would also like them. I don't get it.

  • This drum is well, to put it bluntly, crap, at least as is.

I got one of these as a gift, and is the drum I have been learning on. Sand the head, remove the crossbar and tape it, it becomes decent, especially for a beginner.

  • @canadiandrummer54 The particular drum the man is playing is not very subtle. A bodhrán finds its place in certain kinds of music. Irish rhythmic folk music, like a lot of western European folk music, has a strong regular pulse which is carried primarily in the melody. A bodhrán works well with that kind of music.

And bagpipes are awesome apart from Maltese bagpipes which are excruciating for the first few hours of listening.

  • It's an Irish drum. Saying it is "celtic" is meaningless.

  • @fartybraindeath thanks FartyBrainDeath. i hope you come out with a children educational program on BBC called Don't Look at the Sun, With Dr. FartyBrainDeath

  • @Alphabex8 I shall do it on S4C or BBC Alba and present it in the Celtic language.

  • @fartybraindeath your show has the potential to be the next Wonder Showzen.

  • @canadiandrummer54 This particular demo sounds like shit, probably because it's a cheap drum made in Pakistan rather than a decent one made by a craftsman, and because of the quality of the recording. But to those of us who like Irish traditional music, a good bodhran in the hands of a good player sounds awesome. There are some good examples on this site. The pipes are a longer story, but some of us love them too. It helps to have Scottish roots. It also helps to have a few pints or drams.

  • REALLY NICE SOUND

  • The bodhrán sounds paper-y and a tiny bit ping-y to me. There's no butter or creaminess in the sound at all. The bass is too weak in relation to the higher sounds, which themselves aren't that interesting. The overtones are well controlled, however.

That said, I wouldn't buy this particular drum. Some cheap drums you can tweak, but this one doesn't even show that potential.

  • @canadiandrummer54 or calico with john joe kelly on bodhran

  • @canadiandrummer54 he isn't doin much with it here in this vid listen to more stuff then, whirily reel comes to mind and hear the stuff he does with the bodhran in that.

  • @canadiandrummer54 you are quite wrong.

  • Take a look on Tiago Conall, from Café Irlanda. Here on youtube!

  • @canadiandrummer54 I think you have to have an ear for Celtic music to appreciate this instrument. Some people just don't enjoy it.

  • Fantastic! A pro at his craft.

  • playing isn't that bad on your wrist.. no more than being bored, 13 yr old and full of hormones is.

All you do is stretch your arms, fingers, exercise your wrist by making playing motions and I even use a phone book with my tipper to mock play and just work my wrist more. it's all about technique really. if your style is wrong, not only will the drum sound like total crap, but you can hurt yourself

  • that can't be good for your wrist

  • @MrRyanGC from what ive experianced it doesnt hurt your wrist to play it much, after a while it does make your arm in general ache though, but then again so does alot of things

  • Same with a drum kit, but it can give you really bad arthritis long-term, not that i'm saying I don't love the sound of the Bodhran

  • I like it.

  • Pretty good

  • ta se ag cainth cac bo

  • Is that Gaelic??? Coool...you wouldn't happen to know if it's hard to learn, would you?

  • This is pretty simple........I've been playing off and on for 5 years. Its a cheap investment.

  • @th1nkman gaelic can be hard to learn, but it all depends on how determined you are to learn it. I think rosetta stone offers gaelic, but is best learned when you can have conversations with someone in gaelic so they can correct you. Go gcuire Dia an t-ádh ort!

  • no they dont already checked them lol

  • I know scottish gaelic but not Irish although the words and structure and so similar it is unreal

I can almost speakt o an irish person in scottish gaelic and they understand so do I.

Alba agus Eirinn saor a-nis saor gu brath.

Scotland and Eire free now free till judgement.

  • @th1nkman im learning to play it at the moment, its not very difficult once you get the hang of it :)

  • WOW!! his wirst looks crazy :D

  • i have a mid east bodhran. its pretty nice and its tunable.

  • As my ancestors would say... Póg ma thoin

    This guy is good!

  • isn't it written as Póh mo thon ? ( i read it somewhere else) and no.. im not going to kiss your ass

  • It should be "Póg mo thóin" if you want to know, so the American lad was pretty close to being right. Anois, focáil ort amadán Ollannach.

  • Given the back and forth about this video, it's pretty funny. This isn't a tunable bodhran, it's pegged. Perhaps it's skin, perhaps vinyl. Either way this is a cheap drum. As it goes, the instrument IS flat, but it doesn't matter because there is no way to tune it other than move to the desert

  • ya thus you TUNE it to your ear. It's not like a timpani kettle.

  • you cannot tune a bodhran, only loosen or tighten the skin according to your own preferences for sound.

  • Go on boy!!

  • this bodhrán is tuned correctly, whoever said its not is wrong, sorry.

    Good Player.

  • @neilhosey can a drum be out of tune? how the hell would you tell a drum was out of tune, for that matter how would you tune a drum?

  • @wolfbrother0 Measure the pitch at each point of tension (tension hooks, tacks etc) and adjust so they're all even and provide the drum with it's greatest tone.

  • @wolfbrother0 If the tension of the skin is not spread equally, you'll get distorted overtones when you strike the drum. These are annoying to hear.

  • bravissimo

  • haste to the wedding

  • man he's good

  • Thank you, congratulations and greetings from Galiza.

  • Sounds like a plastic membrane, not skin... love the solo, and the artificial sound of it... sounds so... electro. :)

  • Nice!

  • well done....but the sound is a little bit such pac pac pac pac....i like pom pom pom:-)

  • Where the fuk is the teaching module?

  • its demo. not an exhibition.

  • Have you tried to play that thing?

That is a damn good player and a half!

  • shut up u stupid yank u dont know what your even talkin about

  • Comment removed

  • oh your fuking clever i think YOU deserve a fukin medal

first everybody says u when they mean you

your just sayin that to make yourself look really smart.

It would be true to say that i dont really like americans because generally you seem to act as though you know everyting.

I do however have many american friends who unlike yourself are not ignorant and know about other cultures.

No i probably dont know as much about drums as you do but i dont think you even knew what a bodhrán was.

  • And I will also admit that this video is not very good compared to other bodhrán performances that I have seen

  • I should take back what I said about the americans being supid because not all americans are ignorant like you lol

  • Comment removed

  • its called a bodhrán and it is part of my culture and irish culture so this comment is funny because you are clearly just showing your ignorance of irish culture

  • Comment removed

  • oh come on i was startin to enjoy myself and its called a fada not a fukin apostraphe

  • in the matter of tuning i think its just personal preference man.

  • Comment removed

  • ok don't go saying yanks are completely ignorant, some are different though. stereotyping a country by its worst members is not a good stereotype. don't get me wrong though, many americans are absolutely pig-headed and literally pig-like in their size; however, that does not give you cause to say that most are that way or that we are "generally" like that. And come on, it would take a brit to say his english is the proper one and you know that. Wherever you come from you should know that.

  • I assume you're English?

Can I just say, just because it's done all the time DOESN'T MAKE IT RIGHT.

    Accurate grammar costs nothing.

How can you have a go at an American for having bad grammar, when your own is just as bad.

You, sire, are one of the biggest hippocrites alive.

  • my grammar is terrible for two reasons. a. because i have dislexia and b. because i dont care about spelling and such on the internet.

    and no im not english.

  • Nice work. but again, like I see on alot of vids, where's the dynamics and change in pitch? I dunno, maybe I just play more with my left hand, but a single pitch or 2 gets boring after a while.

But I gotta give credit, the rimshots were nice and the fact you play with a Larger ended beater is pretty impressive. I actually stay away from the heavy beaters so seeing this was a really nice change!

  • he is DA MAN!!!

  • awsome. whos the old man?

  • patrick t.reilly
