iPad can't measure up to a PADD. Personal Access Display Device or Personal Access Data Device. PADD's in Star Trek have way more function then the iPad could ever hope to have and is not a closed off system like the iPad. Basically having a PADD is like having the freedom of a Fully Functional OS on a Desktop computer in your hand.
Why does Apple and Microsoft focus on making the tablet computers and communication devices from Star Trek? When is someone going to invent a medical scanner that fits in your hands, and a hypo-spray to cure this damn cold I have had for 2 WEEKS?!?!
@TheGreatAfricanGuru - I wish they would. They could do a Star Trek set in the 26th century set onboard the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-J. The ship has already been designed as well.
En la pelicula la maquina del tiempo año 2002 en el futuro el viajero entra en una biblioteca digital pero antes de eso hay unos niños que tienen una tableta digital en sus manos.
actually the ipad in startrek was a beta version a tester ipad didnt go into actual circualtion of design until after star trek nemises when the testing was complete and the bugs were worked out
@lancebasspop The P.A.D.D. that they used on Star Trek was NOT any sort of Apple 'beta'.. it was a prop, upgraded in appearance from the ancient electronic clipboards from the 1960s TOS show - it did absolutely nothing and you can find good images of them online. They did not even include LIGHTED SCREENS until Star Trek: Insurrection! The actual predecessor of the iphone, ipod Touch and ipad was called the Apple Newton, and it was introduced in 1987.
@Mikanojo "they did not even include LIGHTED SCREENS until Star Trek: Insurrection!" The screens were lit even in the regular TNG episodes (starting in 1987). Newton DEVELOPMENT at Apple started in 1987, the first actual sold product is of 1992 (!) so thats a 5 year gap.
@kermitthefragger Incorrect. The 'lighted' screens on the television series was a visual effect added by computer AFTER the taping of the episodes. In fact many of the props used on the set of the series were painted pieces of wood - that includes the PADDS, the weapons, and many other props. Go to Memory Alpha online and read there about the props.
@Mikanojo I've got to let you in on a secret: The ship they are supposedly on, its not real, its a model sitting in a basement and they used special effects to make it look big and create the illusion it was flying in space.
Well DUH! of course the props weren't really working. The point is who came up with the concept.
@kermitthefragger So before you wrote that "The screens were lit even in the regular TNG episodes (starting in 1987). " -which was just plain false- and now you wish to claim that it was only the "concept" of the iPad that Star Trek developed first? The video maker claims it was created 'first' for Star Trek First Contact (1996) The first version of the Apple PDA that would become the iPad was the Apple Newton Messagepad 100, it debuted at Macworld Expo in Boston, August 3, 1993. You lose.
@kermitthefragger It is hard for you to be condescending to me after you have already displayed your lack of knowledge in your own posts. You literally have the internet at your fingertips.. Try doing a bit of research. A better argument would be that the TOS communicator predated the cell phone by many years, or the TOS memory disks predated 3.5 floppies.. but this iPad claim is just ignorant of the facts.
@Mikanojo Following your line of reasoning the communicator and microtapes (they were called MICROTAPES) aren't valid examples either since they are also non working stage props.
Also the concept of microtapes in TOS was by no means revolutionary. Those already existed at that time; the first tape drive is of the 1950's and TOS is of the 1960's. They just made it smaller. If they had hinted that it was an optical storage medium or something, that would have been revolutionary.
@kermitthefragger What is silly is the idea that the PADD was in any way some sort of Apple 'beta'. Or that it was the concept for the iPad, since Apple was already working on it. You changed your argument to concepts - speaking of concepts, what we CAN say is that the communicator concept precedes the cell phone by several years. The microtapes from TOS do indeed precede the old 3.5 floppies.. Floppy disks and tape cassettes are both MAGNETIC storage media! Not optical like CD/DVD etc.
@Mikanojo I never said the PADD was an Apple beta, that was lancebasspop. I only reacted to you stating that the screens of PADD's weren't lit before Insurection, which is wrong because they are also lit in TNG (which is what I posted). I was always talking about concepts. About the microtapes; I the concept is not revolutionary because magnetic storage (tape) was already in actual use at that time in real life.
@kermitthefragger Insurrection is credited as having the first PADD that actually DID light up with its own power - not just a special effect added after. Yes, magnetic tape and even optical disks were in use by 1966 when TOS began.. but the idea of the square thin colored disks instead of reel-to-reel tapes was revolutionary.. and can be compared to the 3.5" floppies. Also at the time when all civilian phones were corded and computers were room size, TOS had communicators and tricorders.
steve jobs didn't invent the ipad. star trek did.

Microsoft used the tablet form factor before Apple did.
If Anything...Star Trek stole the design of the tablet form factor from Microsoft.
