The first time I saw this movie I was waiting for something to happen. My movie listings on Mediacom told me it was to be a Chevy Chase movie. So after a half hour I started to realise I'm watching something different, but after that I got hooked on watching the rest. I guess I'm glad in a way because atleast I now know what The Color Purple is about.
What I'm not understanding about this film though is the whole black people owning land bit. This movie takes place in 1900s right?
Let me just say I am soooo glad I wasn't around to watch this movie in the theaters. That would've been too much for public. Good grief this movie is AWESOME! *As tears roll down my cheeks*
@ 1:39 you can see that in his face he thinks he has the power but you can see in his eyes a certain hint of regret in making the sisters become apart.
Absolutely moving and visceral. When Nettie screams out WHY in desperation and the way the scene was shot, it just hits right to the core. I cry every time I see this scene.
@candygirl050792 he had control of Celie and he wanted to ruin both mentally. Nettie was the strongest of the two and he tried but knew he couldn't break her so he put her out to hurt celie and her.
@JendayiFaith I guess I dont understand why Cellie (the sister in the blue) didnt just jump the fence and run away with her.....she should have told him to f*ck himself and then took off..but I guess you could say this moment really guides the direction of the movie....so I can see why from a directors stand point why she couldnt go with Nettie.
Damn, all of this because Nettie rejected his advances. Mister was a cold-hearted bastard. I hated him. Ugh. Nettie and Celie have such a wonderful love that can't be described. If someone ever tried to separate me and my brother, I would kill them. Like Nettie says, "Nothing but death can keep me from it."
It doesn´t matter if the academy didn´t give them the Oscar. It was the best movie ever doesn´t matter how tough you are, doesn´t matter what color you are neither what name you call God, but one thing I can guarantee if you are a human being your eyes will watering after seeing this scene and it will be deep touch your heart the Oscar couldn´t and will never understand it. They are about money only money this taught everyone who had a privilege to watch it.
My God, even now I still cry at this scene. I cannot imagine how emotionally wrenching this had to be for the performers. What an absolute shame and disgrace no awards were awarded to this stellar movie. One of my all time fave movies....no matter how many times I watch it.
@FuturePWilliams between this one and when he slit that dudes throat in the Witness with harrison ford..man he played some mean people before Lethal Weapon.
@DrDementia1000 most likely Stockholm syndrome...the abusee will come to rely on the abuser for food and shelter and even the most meager of things while being too afraid to stand up to the abuser..it happens with hostages and whatnot. you should google it to get more information.
@kristineurie44 No, because Mister would have taken her. Do you not realize that Celie was promised to him?! She was the only one doing chores in the house and takin care of his rotten ass kids. You think he would have just let her go without a fight?! The only reason why he let her go in the end, was because she finally had the inner strength to stand up to him. She had been raped, abused, and run into the ground. She was weak emotionally at the beginning of the movie.
@Mikizzle15 but Mr didnt want Celie, which is why he still had a relationship with Shug. Honestly, if Celie ran out, i doubt Mr would care. He would just find another woman to be his wife.
@kristineurie44 I know Mister didn't want Celie, but Shug wasn't about to take care of that house and those kids. That's all he wanted Celie for was to do the work around that house.
I've read that Danny Glover didn't like doing this scene. I understand why. If you don't remember anything from this movie this scene will always stick out.
@Rosannasfriend bc he tried sleeping/well..raping nettie and she fought him off and that pissed him off. long story short, he got pissed and kicked her off his land.
@EmoKeks09 It's a song that they shared as sisters "You and me, us never part. Mackie Dada. You and me, us have one heart. Mackie Dada. Ain't no ocean, ain't no sea. Mackie Dada. Keep my sister way from me. Mackie Dada.

just to say ahead of time I don't like this scene I LOVE IT This will always be my favorite movie cause well...can't say too painful. The first movie to touce me and relate to.Amen.
One of the most painful things I have ever watched. Truly a picture of love between two people. How many of us can really say we love or have been loved so much that separation is this painful?
Was there one Black Male with any redeeming qualities in this movie whatsoever? Is there anything in this movie that might lead a person to believe that Black Males are either depraved animals, dim wits or any combination thereof? I don't think so.
I'm so GLAD that all the Black Men (including myself) that I grew up around in my family either went to college, or joined the service, don't beat their wives, don't hang out at clubs and take care of their kids.
@MTXSHO9732vV8SHO Actually, the son showed the redeeming qualities. He started off badly, but eventually learned from his errors. I think one of the messages in the movie is redeeming oneself. Although Albert (Mister) is a horrid person throughout the movie, he ends things by doing the right thing by his exwife. I am also a black male, educated and have done well for myself. This is only a scope into the bad that all of us can do. Not just black or white.
@CopyboyVideo Lord, I agree!! Gorillas in the Mist won it that year. I just can't watch that movie because I can't believe The Color Purple didn't win. This movie is just amazing.
One of the most primal and moving scenes ever put to film. The acting is freakishly good. Makes most of the garbage being released these days seem like a waste of time
god the first time i saw this scene back when i was younger, i hated it and still do, the thought of being separated from my sisters like that always made me feel so sad
this part was sooo sad, they ment a lot to each other and his mean stanken perverted self thought hed just tare the apart , glad they got back together in the end!
This is a scene you can never forget. Along with the scene when Celie and Nettie are reunite after 40 years. This is a beautiful movie. Still cant believe it didn't when a single Oscar in 1985. That had to have been the biggest snub in Oscar history. Shame! Out of Africa is a good movie, but not nearly as good as this one. This movie should have won award.
@mattbernabe DEFINITELY agree with you there. i saw out of africa, it is long and dry and easily forgettable. i cannot believe it won over this. people will be talking about this movie for many, many years. i've seen this movie on a few top movie lists, and it ALWAYS has had a higher rating than out of africa, if it even appears at all! thank u for posting that comment!
This is probably the most heartbreaking scene in movie history! It's so powerful and emotional. You cant help but to cry a little. I always wondered at 15 seconds, when Celie is holding on to Nettie's hands and is being dragged down the steps, I wondered if the actress had some pads for the back of her legs, because it looked like she injured the hell out of legs if she didn't. It's a heartbreaking moment, I always hoped if the actress was okay when she did it!
not understanding what part in this scene u found so funny. this is one of the more difficult scenes in the movie to watch, and don't see the hilarity you take from it.
Its funny how Tyler Perry makes fun of this scene all the time in his plays, and makes millions. but if i make fun of it im some kinDa monster, explain that shit to me please?
You're not Tyler Perry, and he may have "millions", but not a penny of it came out of my pocket! it may be "just a movie", but to true fans of the film (and to movies period), a movie is supposed to capture you and involve you - make you forget that it is, in fact, a movie. tragic scenes like this are the reasons why we TRUE film fans temporarily forget that there is a person behind the scenes yelling "cut", having us wonder where you find the humor in it. film major? you show know better.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
sorry, but u cant say im not a true fan. i know for a fact i know know more about the movie and the book than you do.
Anyway its just like when u video somebody falling and breaking their leg. yeah take it seriously at 1st. when the drama all boils over and everything is ok, u can sit back & laugh about the situation.
Now u cant tell me u dont understand what im saying. it happens all the time on youtube & other sites. When things happen, ppl laugh it off later. thats just life.
unfortunately, for someone who supposedly knows more about the film (& the book) more than me, this scene does NOT involve anyone breaking their leg. it doesn't even involve a situation where 1 can "sit back & laugh" about it later. now, i'm not sure what kind of sideways family values u were raised on, but the separating of family members from each other is in no way humorous, even if it is "just a movie". detach yourself from ur parents, then tell me that you'll "laugh it off later"!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
ahh i see now. if u would have read a previous comment of mine, u would know i do not find the separation of Nattie & Celie funny. if u thought that, i agree, that would make me a total Jerk.
Sorry, but i was laughing at when Celie was dragged down the steps @ 0:15. i thought u knew. That was a mistake on the set, but it made it more realistic so they keep it. Lots of ppl find "fallin down steps" funny. What kinda sideways person r u to post a sad video just to make ppl sad?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
ive posted many videos on youtube. some are humorous, some are ment to be taken seriously. Infact, my latest video has the color Purple in it.
Put if i post a video that is sad, its gonna have some meaning behind it. Why post a video just to make ppl sad? so its not shame on me, its shame on u. i dont believe in that. Spread smiles not frowns.
& get ur heart off ur sleeve and back in ur chest wear it belongs
some of the vids i've posted have deep meaning. whether they be happy or sad, i've felt some true feelings b/c of them. i don't intend to make my viewers sad, but if they felt something, then i've succeeded. the color purple is a great movie (and book) with attributes that make ppl feel, think, and wonder. to assume that u know more about them than me w/o evidence is pure ignorance and proves that YOUR heart is on your sleeve.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
u said, "as long as they felt something u succeeded." Well i felt something, & It was humor, tee hee.
anyways sense u know so much about it, ill put u to the test then.
tell me why did it get nominated for 12 academy awards but didn't win? or whats the Irony in Nick name of Sophia's boyfriend Henry?
And who produced the music? i bet u will hit up Wikipedia if u got the balls. oyeah, u dont have the balls, u probably cry at the end of "Driving Miss Daisy" too
there isn't any, actually. He is just trying to prove to the world and to himself that he is a real man. Like: "I eat meat, get drunk, fuck all the bitches, use drugs and love football... get the fuck out of my way..." u know ?? Poor one. thats one of the most emotional scenes from the worldwide cinema of all times.
Esta película la vi hace muchos años, realmente me impacto mucho esta escena, encuentro que hicieron un trabajo extraordinario, esta tan bien trabajada la escena que la sensación se trasmite facilmente, muy emocionante. xD
I never cry at any movie or book whatsoever, but the moment I saw this, a tear rolled down my eye. This is so sad, but it's more sad when you watch the movie from the beginning and get to this part.

MTXSHO9732vV8SHO 1 year ago
@MTXSHO9732vV8SHO Actually, the son showed the redeeming qualities. He started off badly, but eventually learned from his errors. I think one of the messages in the movie is redeeming oneself. Although Albert (Mister) is a horrid person throughout the movie, he ends things by doing the right thing by his exwife. I am also a black male, educated and have done well for myself. This is only a scope into the bad that all of us can do. Not just black or white.
Burke2300 1 year ago
@MTXSHO9732vV8SHO If you read about the Alice Bailey you'd see why the movie was so anti black male. It's bad enough Oprah was involed!

This has got to be the most gut-wrenching scene in the whole history of film. And it didn't win a single Oscar? Really? Ridiculous.
CopyboyVideo 1 year ago
@CopyboyVideo Lord, I agree!! Gorillas in the Mist won it that year. I just can't watch that movie because I can't believe The Color Purple didn't win. This movie is just amazing.
Burke2300 1 year ago 2
@Burke2300 Actually it was "Out Of Africa"...but I agree with you anyway.

@emgodhth You are correct. I didn't know where my head was. Thanks for the correction!

This is too real and heart breaking, this is one of the greates acts i have ever seen. this should have won oscar!

One of the most primal and moving scenes ever put to film. The acting is freakishly good. Makes most of the garbage being released these days seem like a waste of time

Full of sad movie I've looked at because of was my favorite part where Celie and Nettie have not seen in
Giiiuliio 1 year ago
This is a scene you can never forget. Along with the scene when Celie and Nettie are reunite after 40 years. This is a beautiful movie. Still cant believe it didn't when a single Oscar in 1985. That had to have been the biggest snub in Oscar history. Shame! Out of Africa is a good movie, but not nearly as good as this one. This movie should have won award.
mattbernabe 1 year ago 43
@mattbernabe DEFINITELY agree with you there. i saw out of africa, it is long and dry and easily forgettable. i cannot believe it won over this. people will be talking about this movie for many, many years. i've seen this movie on a few top movie lists, and it ALWAYS has had a higher rating than out of africa, if it even appears at all! thank u for posting that comment!
emgodhth 1 year ago 4
@emgodhth I've never even seen "Out of Africa", it always looked boring to me.
ERAUPRCWA 11 months ago
@mattbernabe the oscars and the academy are bs anyway, so it doesn't matter. i'm not just saying that either.

It's a heartbreaking moment, I always hoped if the actress was okay when she did it!

liloboy911808 2 years ago
not understanding what part in this scene u found so funny. this is one of the more difficult scenes in the movie to watch, and don't see the hilarity you take from it.
emgodhth 2 years ago
1st of all, as a film major, i realize its just a movie. Its not based on a true story.
So i look at movies in a creation point of view. I know when they yelded "Cut" inbetween they were laughing about it too"
but we got ppl that cant tell real from make believe. and even in everyday real life, ppl often look back at their trageties and find humor in it.
To be more specificlly, i found it funny at 0:15 when she slides down the steps. beyond that its not funny

Its funny how Tyler Perry makes fun of this scene all the time in his plays, and makes millions. but if i make fun of it im some kinDa monster, explain that shit to me please?
XrisSmiles 2 years ago
You're not Tyler Perry, and he may have "millions", but not a penny of it came out of my pocket! it may be "just a movie", but to true fans of the film (and to movies period), a movie is supposed to capture you and involve you - make you forget that it is, in fact, a movie. tragic scenes like this are the reasons why we TRUE film fans temporarily forget that there is a person behind the scenes yelling "cut", having us wonder where you find the humor in it. film major? you show know better.

sorry, but u cant say im not a true fan. i know for a fact i know know more about the movie and the book than you do.
XrisSmiles 2 years ago
unfortunately, for someone who supposedly knows more about the film (& the book) more than me, this scene does NOT involve anyone breaking their leg. it doesn't even involve a situation where 1 can "sit back & laugh" about it later. now, i'm not sure what kind of sideways family values u were raised on, but the separating of family members from each other is in no way humorous, even if it is "just a movie". detach yourself from ur parents, then tell me that you'll "laugh it off later"!

ahh i see now. if u would have read a previous comment of mine, u would know i do not find the separation of Nattie & Celie funny. if u thought that, i agree, that would make me a total Jerk.
Sorry, but i was laughing at when Celie was dragged down the steps @ 0:15. i thought u knew. That was a mistake on the set, but it made it more realistic so they keep it. Lots of ppl find "fallin down steps" funny. What kinda sideways person r u to post a sad video just to make ppl sad?

ive posted many videos on youtube. some are humorous, some are ment to be taken seriously.
XrisSmiles 2 years ago
some of the vids i've posted have deep meaning. whether they be happy or sad, i've felt some true feelings b/c of them. i don't intend to make my viewers sad, but if they felt something, then i've succeeded. the color purple is a great movie (and book) with attributes that make ppl feel, think, and wonder. to assume that u know more about them than me w/o evidence is pure ignorance and proves that YOUR heart is on your sleeve.

u said, "as long as they felt something u succeeded." Well i felt something, & It was humor, tee hee.
anyways sense u know so much about it, ill put u to the test then.
tell me why did it get nominated for 12 academy awards but didn't win? or whats the Irony in Nick name of Sophia's boyfriend Henry?
And who produced the music? i bet u will hit up Wikipedia if u got the balls. oyeah, u dont have the balls, u probably cry at the end of "Driving Miss Daisy" too

there isn't any, actually. He is just trying to prove to the world and to himself that he is a real man. Like: "I eat meat, get drunk, fuck all the bitches, use drugs and love football... get the fuck out of my way..." u know ?? Poor one. thats one of the most emotional scenes from the worldwide cinema of all times.
