  • The first time I saw this movie I was waiting for something to happen. My movie listings on Mediacom told me it was to be a Chevy Chase movie. So after a half hour I started to realise I'm watching something different, but after that I got hooked on watching the rest. I guess I'm glad in a way because atleast I now know what The Color Purple is about.

What I'm not understanding about this film though is the whole black people owning land bit. This movie takes place in 1900s right?

  • @VyTeg Some black post-emancipation were able to become wealthy, and their children would inherent land and/or money.

  • I hardly ever cry at films, but this scene made me cry

  • i still love this movie sooo much!! so sad part :(

  • the way the music culminates when they singing their special "Ma Ki Da Da" song really gets to you... :(

  • I never saw the movie, first scene I've seen. Already have tears in my eyes.

  • This makes me cry

  • I sent this to my bestie...she's leaving me all alone on bbm while she goes to the iphone...:(

  • @adorable12341 lyrics are

You and me, Us never part

    Makidada

You and me, Us have one heart

    Makidada

Ain't no ocean, Aint no sea

    Makidada

Keep my sistah way from me

    Makidada

  • just because Nettie didn't give him her virginity :/

  • does anyone know the lyrics

  • Why didn't Celie go with her???

  • Sad moment!!!

  • Wow how could you throw rocks at her after throwing her out. That is..unbelieveable.

  • WORST part of the movie. I wish we could have seen what happened between Nettie running away from Mister and him throwing her out the house.

  • @jerrellknox i know rigght !

  • man...these people can ACT!!! If you dont tear up at least once while watching this movie, You dont have a heart.

  • @RainbowStarMuffin Then I don't have a heart.

And they call caucasian men equal to these nowdays, hah. Animals.

  • how could she go up against him shit mister is 50 and celie is like 12

and nettie like 10 they couldnt fight him

  • Man My mom love this movie, but I get pissed every time I see how Celie let Mister & everybody else Walk all over her.... Uggh

  • most unforgettable line " Nothing but death can keep me from her " makes me cry

  • Ooh such a sad scene gets me everytime especially wen nettie screams "Whhyyyyyyy!"

  • gets me everytime I watch this best scene

  • best scene ever,,,

  • Please write me into the script so that I can systematically beat misters ass.

  • Damn its sadder then what I remember smh

  • Ahaaaa

  • ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!

  • :(

  • Let me just say I am soooo glad I wasn't around to watch this movie in the theaters. That would've been too much for public. Good grief this movie is AWESOME! *As tears roll down my cheeks*

  • So sad..

  • greates movies of all time! the first time i saw this movie i cried sooo much!! and still do, i hated danny glover too!! BEST MOPVIE!!

  • My fave scene in the movie

  • My Favorite Movie Ever!!

  • “Me and you, us never part. Makidada. Me and you, us have one heart. Makidada. Ain’t no ocean, ain’t no sea. Makidada. Keep my sister away from me.”

  • @ 1:39 you can see that in his face he thinks he has the power but you can see in his eyes a certain hint of regret in making the sisters become apart.

  • He can't fuck the sister...so he sabotages and separates them...in the end he ends up with NOTHING.

  • why did he do that?

  • I want to get the movie. There should be English subtitles in this video.

  • so sad it makes me cry all the time

  • Nothin but death can keep me from it - The Power of Love.

  • Seen this scene wayy to many times for it to get me everytime like it does. Especially when she screams, "Why!"

  • why did he want to separate them??

  • I can't stop crying watching it... Why :(

  • Comment removed

  • Ripping 2 sisters apart...esp. 2 sisters who love each other as much as Celie and Nettie...that Albert needs a serious beating!!!! >:-(

  • I remember this being way more heart breaking for when I was 10 years old...

  • ME AND YOU MUST NEVER PART, MAKIDADA..ME AND YOU US HAVE ONE HEART...AINT NOT OCEAN AINT NO SEA....MAKIDADA...KEEP MY SISTER WAY FROM ME MAKIDADA

  • Wow, why did he want to rape nettie so bad?

  • @candygirl050792 he had control of Celie and he wanted to ruin both mentally. Nettie was the strongest of the two and he tried but knew he couldn't break her so he put her out to hurt celie and her.

  • well my heart has just been ripped out

  • Just as heart breaking as when I saw it the very first time!

  • @JendayiFaith I guess I dont understand why Cellie (the sister in the blue) didnt just jump the fence and run away with her.....she should have told him to f*ck himself and then took off..but I guess you could say this moment really guides the direction of the movie....so I can see why from a directors stand point why she couldnt go with Nettie.

  • @JendayiFaith He seperated them because Nettie(the sister in the white) wouldnt let him have his way with her.

  • my friend just created a fan page for this movie on faceboook here , as i can not link it here you can search it on FB

  • Damn, all of this because Nettie rejected his advances. Mister was a cold-hearted bastard. I hated him. Ugh. Nettie and Celie have such a wonderful love that can't be described. If someone ever tried to separate me and my brother, I would kill them. Like Nettie says, "Nothing but death can keep me from it."

  • saddest part of the entire movie no questions asked!

  • It doesn´t matter if the academy didn´t give them the Oscar. It was the best movie ever doesn´t matter how tough you are, doesn´t matter what color you are neither what name you call God, but one thing I can guarantee if you are a human being your eyes will watering after seeing this scene and it will be deep touch your heart the Oscar couldn´t and will never understand it. They are about money only money this taught everyone who had a privilege to watch it.

  • My God, even now I still cry at this scene. I cannot imagine how emotionally wrenching this had to be for the performers. What an absolute shame and disgrace no awards were awarded to this stellar movie. One of my all time fave movies....no matter how many times I watch it.

  • This scene will make you hate Danny Glover

  • @FuturePWilliams between this one and when he slit that dudes throat in the Witness with harrison ford..man he played some mean people before Lethal Weapon.

  • @KeithWasHere1 Perhaps you can answer me this. If Celie hated Mister's gut, then why did she stay with him all those years? I just don't get it.

  • @DrDementia1000 most likely Stockholm syndrome...the abusee will come to rely on the abuser for food and shelter and even the most meager of things while being too afraid to stand up to the abuser..it happens with hostages and whatnot. you should google it to get more information.

  • @DrDementia1000 You should read the book.

  • @FuturePWilliams it proves he's a great actor. :)

  • This scene is still sad to watch all the time

  • now see, all Celie had to do was jump over that fence and run away with Nettie. All of this is just some extra drama. lol

  • @kristineurie44 No, because Mister would have taken her. Do you not realize that Celie was promised to him?! She was the only one doing chores in the house and takin care of his rotten ass kids. You think he would have just let her go without a fight?! The only reason why he let her go in the end, was because she finally had the inner strength to stand up to him. She had been raped, abused, and run into the ground. She was weak emotionally at the beginning of the movie.

  • @Mikizzle15 but Mr didnt want Celie, which is why he still had a relationship with Shug. Honestly, if Celie ran out, i doubt Mr would care. He would just find another woman to be his wife.

  • @kristineurie44 I know Mister didn't want Celie, but Shug wasn't about to take care of that house and those kids. That's all he wanted Celie for was to do the work around that house.

  • @Mikizzle15 lol thats true. Shug was a mess.

  • There's nothing funny about this part of Color Purple...at all!!!

  • I find this scene funnier more than anything...

    :L

  • Was Danny Glover even nominated?

  • WHY..WHY..WHY..LOL

  • Oscaaaar , the academy where are you when celie and Netiie were being seperated ????

  • I always cry when I think about this!!!!!

  • I guess the 3 who disliked this video just were browsing a specific CP scene for fun??? WHACK!

  • I've read that Danny Glover didn't like doing this scene. I understand why. If you don't remember anything from this movie this scene will always stick out.

  • what a powerful movie from start to end,,God has put his finger and annoited this movie..tears every time!

  • The Best Scene ever

I LOVE THIS MOVIE IS MAKING MY CRY ON THIS SCENE :'(

    I LOVE IT

  • when you see lethal weapon, you just love danny glover character

but when you see this you just hate him!!!

    great actor!!!!!!!!!!

  • celie moved on to woodcrest and became a professionnal mexican

  • The only movie that made me cry...the real fun here!..

  • why did he separate them?

  • @Rosannasfriend bc he tried sleeping/well..raping nettie and she fought him off and that pissed him off. long story short, he got pissed and kicked her off his land.

  • @alaiiinalan yes, I watched the scene where he tried to rape her after asking the question. Thanks anyway. :)

  • To the 3 people who voted this thumbs down..YOU SUCK..This is one of the greatest movies of all time.

  • I've never even seen this movie and I'm bawling my eyes out D:

  • im crying :(

  • One of the saddest movie scenes ever.

  • Can somebody tell me: What are they singing? I'm German and I don't understand very clearly. Thx

  • @EmoKeks09 Watch the movie and your know why -_-

  • @EmoKeks09 It's a song that they shared as sisters "You and me, us never part. Mackie Dada. You and me, us have one heart. Mackie Dada. Ain't no ocean, ain't no sea. Mackie Dada. Keep my sister way from me. Mackie Dada.

It 's just something they sang to each other to remind them that nothing is stronger than a sister's love. Hope that helps.

  • @EmoKeks09 its an african chant or rhyme called makidada. you know kinda like miss mary mack or patty cake

  • This was so horrible :( It made me cry

  • Did she call Celie an "it"

  • This movie has some really wonderful actors

  • This is one of my favorite scenes from the movie. Its hard not to laugh or cry at this. I'm just mad they got robbed at the Oscars.

  • @tone1981 Yeah I said it. Laugh, in a dark humor eye this was funny. "Whhhyyyyyyy, whhhyyyyy?"

  • this part is soo sad

  • I've challenged myself sooo many times to get past 1:20 without just completely losing it...but when mister goes to backhand nettie and she cowers, then raises her hands as she sobs "WHY" as she backs away...HOT MESS, every time...

I met danny glover a couple months ago at work, and as everyone else was calling him murtaugh and asking him if he's "too old for this shit" still...I kept staring at him, wanting to tell him how much I hated him growing up because of this scene...

  • The first time i ever saw this i was 6 and i cried like a baby and now after seeing it so many times i laugh, but still it's intense. the boondocks went 10x harder! lol! The book and movie brilliant. everyone who was every nominated for this movie was fucking robbed forever. 11 nominations and no win? like r u really serious.? Cher can win an award and not Oprah? like really? but i still love Cher anyways, she's not a bad actress! lol!

  • omg this is sad

  • Why Why L.M.F.A.O

  • MY FAVORITE MOVIE!!!!

  • boondocks spoof this scene when ruckus apdoted dad mister ( same name from color purple) throw his ass out of the house. i think the boondocks version was more funny, but this one is real intense

  • The majority of the time when ever i see any sad film, no metter how devastating, unfortunate, depressing, ETC. it is i never have it n me 2 cry @ all. But when i watched ths scene from ths film it was so powerful it made me majorly tear up. ths is the very 1st film i've shed tears while wtching.

  • just to say ahead of time I don't like this scene I LOVE IT This will always be my favorite movie cause well...can't say too painful. The first movie to touce me and relate to.Amen.

  • I think I'm in love with Speilberg

  • One of the most painful things I have ever watched. Truly a picture of love between two people. How many of us can really say we love or have been loved so much that separation is this painful?

  • amazing scene.

  • Was there one Black Male with any redeeming qualities in this movie whatsoever? Is there anything in this movie that might lead a person to believe that Black Males are either depraved animals, dim wits or any combination thereof? I don't think so.

I'm so GLAD that all the Black Men (including myself) that I grew up around in my family either went to college, or joined the service, don't beat their wives, don't hang out at clubs and take care of their kids.

  • @MTXSHO9732vV8SHO Actually, the son showed the redeeming qualities. He started off badly, but eventually learned from his errors. I think one of the messages in the movie is redeeming oneself. Although Albert (Mister) is a horrid person throughout the movie, he ends things by doing the right thing by his exwife. I am also a black male, educated and have done well for myself. This is only a scope into the bad that all of us can do. Not just black or white.

  • @MTXSHO9732vV8SHO If you read about the Alice Bailey you'd see why the movie was so anti black male. It's bad enough Oprah was involed!

  • Oh my God,this scene makes me cry every time I see it! :')

  • this scene makes me cry, so sad

  • This has got to be the most gut-wrenching scene in the whole history of film. And it didn't win a single Oscar? Really? Ridiculous.

  • @CopyboyVideo Lord, I agree!! Gorillas in the Mist won it that year. I just can't watch that movie because I can't believe The Color Purple didn't win. This movie is just amazing.

  • @Burke2300 Actually it was "Out Of Africa"...but I agree with you anyway.

  • @emgodhth You are correct. I didn't know where my head was. Thanks for the correction!

  • This is too real and heart breaking, this is one of the greates acts i have ever seen. this should have won oscar!

  • One of the most primal and moving scenes ever put to film. The acting is freakishly good. Makes most of the garbage being released these days seem like a waste of time

  • god the first time i saw this scene back when i was younger, i hated it and still do, the thought of being separated from my sisters like that always made me feel so sad

  • this part was sooo sad, they ment a lot to each other and his mean stanken perverted self thought hed just tare the apart , glad they got back together in the end!

  • i nominate it for the lifetime drama catagory !

  • This movie..brakes my soul into pieces..every time.

  • Full of sad movie I've looked at because of was my favorite part where Celie and Nettie have not seen in

  • This is a scene you can never forget. Along with the scene when Celie and Nettie are reunite after 40 years. This is a beautiful movie. Still cant believe it didn't when a single Oscar in 1985. That had to have been the biggest snub in Oscar history. Shame! Out of Africa is a good movie, but not nearly as good as this one. This movie should have won award.

  • @mattbernabe DEFINITELY agree with you there. i saw out of africa, it is long and dry and easily forgettable. i cannot believe it won over this. people will be talking about this movie for many, many years. i've seen this movie on a few top movie lists, and it ALWAYS has had a higher rating than out of africa, if it even appears at all! thank u for posting that comment!

  • @emgodhth I've never even seen "Out of Africa", it always looked boring to me.

  • @mattbernabe the oscars and the academy are bs anyway, so it doesn't matter. i'm not just saying that either.

  • @mattbernabe "I feel the same way about "Saving Private Ryan" not winning in 1998!"

  • This is probably the most heartbreaking scene in movie history! It's so powerful and emotional. You cant help but to cry a little. I always wondered at 15 seconds, when Celie is holding on to Nettie's hands and is being dragged down the steps, I wondered if the actress had some pads for the back of her legs, because it looked like she injured the hell out of legs if she didn't. It's a heartbreaking moment, I always hoped if the actress was okay when she did it!

  • Celie shouts "Write" and Nettie replies

" Nothing but death will keep me from it"

  • at 1.36 the girl says something but I cant hear clearly .. Not if my dad can keep me from him?

  • Definately the most moving scene I have ever seen in a movie.

  • One of the most moving moments in movie history...this scene is so great...supperb acting!!!

  • Whoo, I really needed that cry watching this scene. 1:17 cut right through me everytime.

  • Hands down...the most powerful scene of any movie I have ever seen.....

  • what happened for him to be kicking her out?

  • Celie's sister, Nettie, wouldn't let him have his way with her. If you haven't watched the movie, I strongly recommend it!

  • i thought that was it,i have seen this many times, but not recently....wanted to be sure.

  • What if this was me and my sister..This wouldnt be funny. I feel so bad.

  • I cant stop crying,

  • que filme gostei muito sou fa de filmes drama

  • this was funny

  • everytime i see this part i start to cry

    T.T

  • not understanding what part in this scene u found so funny. this is one of the more difficult scenes in the movie to watch, and don't see the hilarity you take from it.

  • 1st of all, as a film major, i realize its just a movie. Its not based on a true story.

So i look at movies in a creation point of view. I know when they yelded "Cut" inbetween they were laughing about it too"

but we got ppl that cant tell real from make believe. and even in everyday real life, ppl often look back at their trageties and find humor in it.

To be more specificlly, i found it funny at 0:15 when she slides down the steps. beyond that its not funny

  • @XrisSmiles you have no imagination. you're not human. what the hell is wrong with you? don't you have any empathy?

  • Its funny how Tyler Perry makes fun of this scene all the time in his plays, and makes millions. but if i make fun of it im some kinDa monster, explain that shit to me please?

  • You're not Tyler Perry, and he may have "millions", but not a penny of it came out of my pocket! it may be "just a movie", but to true fans of the film (and to movies period), a movie is supposed to capture you and involve you - make you forget that it is, in fact, a movie. tragic scenes like this are the reasons why we TRUE film fans temporarily forget that there is a person behind the scenes yelling "cut", having us wonder where you find the humor in it. film major? you show know better.

  • unfortunately, for someone who supposedly knows more about the film (& the book) more than me, this scene does NOT involve anyone breaking their leg. it doesn't even involve a situation where 1 can "sit back & laugh" about it later. now, i'm not sure what kind of sideways family values u were raised on, but the separating of family members from each other is in no way humorous, even if it is "just a movie". detach yourself from ur parents, then tell me that you'll "laugh it off later"!

  • some of the vids i've posted have deep meaning. whether they be happy or sad, i've felt some true feelings b/c of them. i don't intend to make my viewers sad, but if they felt something, then i've succeeded. the color purple is a great movie (and book) with attributes that make ppl feel, think, and wonder. to assume that u know more about them than me w/o evidence is pure ignorance and proves that YOUR heart is on your sleeve.

  • there isn't any, actually. He is just trying to prove to the world and to himself that he is a real man. Like: "I eat meat, get drunk, fuck all the bitches, use drugs and love football... get the fuck out of my way..." u know ?? Poor one. thats one of the most emotional scenes from the worldwide cinema of all times.

  • lmao!!! its a Got DAM movie man. like as in fiction, make believe, not real.

im a black man in the south, ive watcheD this movie 100 times, no bs. As kiDs we use to watch it 2 twice a Day. yeah its saD, but its just a movie.

Its funny how Tyler Perry makes fun of this scene all the time in his plays, but if i Do it im some kinDa monster, explain that shit to me please?

  • Lawd I can't watch from work. I can't keep from cryin.'

  • Esta película la vi hace muchos años, realmente me impacto mucho esta escena, encuentro que hicieron un trabajo extraordinario, esta tan bien trabajada la escena que la sensación se trasmite facilmente, muy emocionante. xD

  • great acting

    spell jelly j-e-l-l-y

    ricky who? ricky

dont you got nothing better to do

  • I never cry at any movie or book whatsoever, but the moment I saw this, a tear rolled down my eye. This is so sad, but it's more sad when you watch the movie from the beginning and get to this part.

  • WHYYYYY ? (throws hands up)

    lmaooooo !

buh its a good movie .

  • makidata :(

  • Oh, my. This scene always bring on the water works. Very powerful scene.
