  • this whole scene was improvised...it wasnt supposed to go this long....not that is great acting

  • That aside take shows who De Niro and Keitel were all about, the best before Damon and Affleck would do something as personal alike 25 years later. And only a Harvey Keitel role would go through all the BS from his buddy and still "gimme the money" before he ran out of gas at his tie... and then split the chicks and some dough for them.

  • fuk we told that two a kid at school and u got in a big fight

  • My favourite scene probably. Just a bit of a shame you missed out the bit at the end where they say "my left or your left" - I love seeing Keitel trying to suppress a smile after the Joey Clams/Joey Scala thing (I've always thought it was Scala, but was it Scallops then?)

  • I think it's so funny how Johnny boy goes; "Yeah I paid him last week. What did he say I didn't pay him? He's a fucking liar where is he?" And then Charlie goes; "He's out front." and then Johnny's like "So what do I care?" and totally goes back on his threat haha.

    Comedy gold.

  • That's fucked up how he just slaps him.

  • I read that this scene was loosely scripted... mostly ad libbed, very well done...

it's not what Johnny boy says, but HOW he said it... brilliance..

  • De niro's best role.

  • "Q: I got the feeling of improvisation from Mean Streets also.

MS: Yes, there's some improvisation there. Of course the scene where Bob De Niro and Harvey Keitel are in the back room arguing over money was totally improvised."

  • de niro's face at 4:10 after he snatches the money is brilliant!!!

  • Does anyone know what the "mano" expression means literally? Johnny says it twice in reference to the two girls and I understand the use of the expression in this context but not what it literally means..

  • @mwacker3

He is saying "Ma-donna" which is a means of showing excitement or surprise among Italian people. It actually means "The Madonna" or the Blessed Mother Mary

  • @mwacker3 the first is mano, a expression of the Neuyoricans, from "hermano" (brother) like bro, a short form. And the second is a reminder that one of the chicks is "a maadohl", a model.

  • Does anyone know what the "mano" expression means literally? Johnny says it twice in reference to the two girls and I understand the use of the expression in this context but not what it literally means..

  • this is music. you don't get many scenes like this in the movies especially in nowadays cinema. keitel and deniro were truly dancing here. and theyve been dancing ever since. beautiful to watch these guys on the screen.

  • I watched this high. De Niro is the best

  • @Dilly5 haha So did i! and yes De Niro is the best!!!

  • I love that brooklyn accent! fugget about it!

  • That COULD be my favorite scene in Deniro history because I remember when I first saw it and my jaw dropped literally and the person I was watching it with and I just kept looking at each other then back at the screen then back at each other and at the end we were like "That is why deniro is a genius- always has been and always will be!"

P.S. I live keitels reactions in this scene- priceless!

  • I love how Charlie slaps Johnny but Johnny's like "eh, whatevea" lol

  • a great pair up in both Mean Streets and Taxi Driver, its too bad these guys didnt make more movies together

  • lol at tjis scene. DeNiro is amazing !

  • DeNiro has so much karisma.

  • luv this scene...

  • De Niro is brilliant. Simply brilliant.

  • I have a friend that I grew up with that is just like Johnny Boy. I used to get into conversations like this one with him all the time since he was my best friend. Keitel does a great job going along listening to him. I think Keitel trumped DeNiro in this movie. I know aot of people are going to disagree but I always felt that way. Bottom line: they are both great. PS: I saw this movie when it came out. My friends mother took us and we were like 12 years old. Pretty hip when I think back on it.

  • @rjplamf61 Not even in a thousand years, De Niro was by far better than Keitel.

  • @makilovi66 you can only say that because harvey dosent have that many lead roles!

  • madonna mia very handsome

  • this movie is tha same as pope of greenwich village

  • @34HourzDAiLYmedia scorsese and vincent patrick were both from downtown nyc. same characters in real life. but they butchered the movie `pope of greenwich village`..the book blows it away

  • It's too bad Keitel gets pushed back to pity supporting roles these days. Scorsese and Tarantino used Keitel's talents the best.

  • @Maryjaneslave,

Not to mention Keitel and DeNiro have excellent chemistry together, and are still best friends to this day.

  • why iz it wise guys repeat and pete

    whos on 1st?

  • this is what happens when an actor gets in the head of his character, pure genius.

  • what's that song going in the background at 3:17 ?

  • This is me with my banker.

  • "i'm gonna payhim, im gonna PAYEEEEEEM!"

  • @joeyscallops been saying this shit all day haha

  • just love 2.12, haha great acting by de niro.

  • Only the greatest actors can improv like that.

  • You can tell their both fantastic actors beacause they both played COMPLETELY different roles in Taxi Driver.

  • I love the way these guys talk, ayyyy, what chu talkin bout? Whats da matter wid you?

    Yeah, I'm gonna pay uum!

  • "hey...ey..eyh!" hahaha "i'm gonna payy'eeem" lol <3 keitel and de niro really go great together in this movie.

  • simply marvelous. I usually use this scene to 'reset' my brain after occassional shocks it gets, due to crappy acting in some other movies. :)

  • The Weintraub broad was Scorsese's girlfriend at the time. This is where I think De Niro has the edge over Brando. Brando couldn't make you laugh if you were at a Richard Pryor special. De Niro on the other hand is a riot, at least on screen.

  • i fucking love this movie

  • Watt? He said I didnt pay em....... He's a fuckin liar. Where is e?

    LMAO!!!

  • Ayyyyyy. Jimmy Mook!

  • skunts

  • When did this movie come out guys?

  • 1973

  • Johnny Boy: Y'know Joey Clams... Charlie: Yeah. Johnny Boy: ...Joey Scallops, yeah. Charlie: I know him too, yeah. Johnny Boy: ...yeah. No. No, Joey Scallops is Joey Clams. Charlie: Right. Johnny Boy: Right. Charlie: ...they're the same person! Johnny Boy: Yeah! Charlie: 'ey! Johnny Boy: 'ey... fuckin classic!!!
  • @Packiekav Joey Scala nor Scallops dumbass!

  • @J1schwartz its says that was the name on a quotes page i checked k :P

  • @Packiekav that's the best ever

  • a considerable portion of this was improvised which makes it all the more stellar. the natural flow and interplay between these two behemoths is more or less without peer. Superlatives are a must in the arena of giants of cinema.

  • "I wanted to kill this fxxxxx kid..I mean I wanna....GNNNNNNNNN. I wanted to kill this fxxxx kid!"

    2:08

  • jimmy sparks,fk jimmy sparks,..lol and joey clams,u know the same guy,yeah

  • love the accent

  • the italian american accent or NY style ?

Hey I got a good one about this. Since I watch a lot of movies with italian americans, I can't help taking their accents in english courses. The teacher says "where this way of talking comes from :p ?" :)

  • "I'm gonna paYUUUUM!"

  • "I wanna kill this kid!"

  • then you know frankie bones then the kid says it's a false alarm then i see johhny clams de niro has the funniest then i's ever

  • and jumping jack flash in the background is that not so cool...

  • An amazing perfomance, an amazing movie.

  • Completely improvised, from what i've heard. Incredible.

  • Wow.

  • funny without even trying

  • Deniro = genius

  • @cuchoguitar Not lately...

  • one of my favorite scenes from this movie

  • you paid him?

    yeeeeeeaaaaa(gggg)aaaa!

  • haha, i liked this scene.

  • Great scene!

I think the teen from "A Bronx Tale" (Lillo Brancato) looks just like DeNiro in this movie!

  • the kid was a professional de niro impersonator on some beach, they picked him for that exact reason.

  • true mostly in comparison to his role in Raging Bull
