  • One thing you don't realize with Kyrie is that any group that has a version of this song usually has a rocking time performing. I had to learn this for my a cappella group's alumni reunion, and I wish I could perform it all over the place. It's catchy as hell, and yet perfect harmonies.

  • The solos are incredible. Amazing harmonies. You guys killed it tonight on The Sing Off!!! Definitely saved yourselves with the judges! I'm impressed!!!

  • They blew my mind with this one tonight on The Sign Off!

  • They should've won at least something. I was shocked when they didnn't win anything

  • I wish OTR had members that were of another ethnicity rather than Caucasian

  • @OSUKT why? do you have something against Caucasians?

  • rofl he went there

  • @OSUKT Well, when they get off their butts and start singing/auditioning, then On The Rocks will. Besides the fact that there are non-Caucasians in the group, OTR has open auditions every year.

  • Well said, Tyler. Well said.

  • By the way, you guys rocked this song!

  • It's dumb how much we fight over who's better or not. OTR and Outspoken both did well, but both also had completely different styles and sets. The judges score based on their opinions of this, but besides first place it doesn't matter anyways. We can talk all day about how this note was flat or this group had more or less choreo and if that makes you feel better go ahead, but in the end it's just a dumb a cappella competition and is it really going to matter who scored more 30 years from now?

  • yeah but OTR also placed higher than outspoken at quarters.. ]

and as far as performing yeah OTR's choreo wasn't very complicated and they didn't do a lot of funny or acrobatic stuff, so i guess in that sense you could say their performance wasn't as good but when it comes to just the sound, compared to other groups, it doesn't make sense. if the iccas is a singing competiton then otr should have placed a lot better.

  • This is true, but groups tend to alter sets and improve between quarters and semis. This is a debate in the a cappella community. I have spoken with Amanda (Grish) Newman several times about the subjective scoring and value of choreo and other aspects. The explanation I was give is that a cappella goes beyond just singing - it is a form of art and entertainment. Even I have some issues regarding this philosophy, but knowing these things you can see a bit more clearly on what the judges look for

  • But I thought you guys sang TEN TIMES BETTER than "Outspoken"

  • Well the judges didn't agree with that biased statement :)

There are more to ICCA competitions than good voices. Everyone knows OTR can sing, but at this particular show their energy was trumped by groups like Fermata Nowhere and dare I say it - Outspoken. Compare both sets on YouTube and then look at Fermata's set. Even over the crappy recordings you can definitely see who is connected to the audience than just singing. Outspoken connected - OTR did not. Both groups thought they did better.

  • It would be a biased statement if I were from Oregon or had seen either of the groups prior to their performance, ever. But this competition was the first time I had seen either.

I felt OTR was more technically accurate with their musicianship. Outspoken, was a better performance. Outspoken over-used their mics though and I had a hard time hearing the "group" over the soloists or the VP. OTR rarely "performed".

But each group definitely deserved to be at this competition.

  • what you just said was biased cause u started outspoken...

  • Its not biased if its validated to be true. Outspoken placed higher than OtR at the semis. I am friends with plenty of OtR guys and Pete Hollens (the founder of OtR) is a buddy of mine so I have nothing against their success. All I am saying is give credit where its due. Besides, I was addressing the statement of the other guy drawing a direct comparison to OS when there were 5-6 other groups competing as well. Of course I want OS to be good, but I am harder on OS then you know.

  • I hated OTR they were mean off stage.

  • OTR is always nice. It's a rule.

  • If thats word play very cute. If its bad phrasing then no I am not biased for Outspoken. I prefer technical (musically) to showmanship. OTR is better techinically.

  • Not to be picky but the soloist brought you guys down a half step about 25 seconds into the song...

  • Somebody always gets robbed at the ICCAs.

  • How did you guys only get 4th Place or whatever? WTF... were the judges high?

  • we didn't even get 4th we got like 7th haha.

  • The only reason I can think of is that the other groups had more choreography/movement/and transitioning. They are worth a lot of points on the score sheets.

  • yeah the whole thing ended up being a choreography competition.

  • Jonah, your voice sounds like a combination of Fergi and Jesus. Awesome job, man! And kudos to Eric, bass sounds tight.

  • Awesome soloist, I love this song!

  • Heck yes. Amaaaaazing soloist much better than on the CD!!!

  • I agree!

  • Jonah... your the man!
