In the early 70's I watched the bow and stern sail into Erie Harbor. They were built in Mississippi and sailed as a single unit up the Saint Lawrence Seaway.
In Erie they were separated and attached to the "hauling" section of the ship which was built at the Litton Shipyard here in Erie.
At 1000 feet in length, the Presque Isle is unable to travel down stream through the Welland Canal's locks.
I believe you are thinking of the Stewart J. Cort, the 1st 1000 footer on the lakes. bow and stern were welded together, and were sailed to Erie, where they were cut apart and welded to the main body.
As per another vid of this monstrosity: Boy oh boy is she ugly, and smart. I remember a watch in the Ford's wheelhouse when the mate and I were regretting that soon there would be no more greatlakers and they would all be replaced by composites.. and that the sitdown dining rooms would be replaced by a tugboatmans meal; visions of a sardine tin with a crushed cigarette in it at the tiller.
these ships r monsters i have seen many from north pier at presque isle from like 30 feet away it was sweet
