I have a rescue dog and cat. The dog came from a puppy mill and doing my research I see there are many Port Waterdog rescues across the country. I fear that this dog will become famous... and the puppy mills will start. What a wonderful message Pres. Obama would have made if he got a rescue pup. I fear this will only increase abusive puppy mills

One problem with the president getting a dog was that one of his daughters is allergic, so it limited what kind of dog he could take in.

No matter what kind of dog that became the first dog, even a mutt, probably would have encouraged breeders to duplicate that dog.

Puppy mills will exist even if the president did not appoint a first dog. Puppy mills themselves are the problem and need to be eliminated.
