He is still too fat? am I wrong?About 60 years ago, some one gave me a great advice:
Quit smoke! you should belive the health news!(Thanks God!...)
Isaac Stern, once San Francisco Chronicle critic wrote:a pumpkin shape on the stage...and Tenor Mario Lanza and Soprano Deborah Voigt and many many stars
they are severe on diet...When you hear a good advice, first that you feel discomfort
or angry...or...Here,I say:"Stage manners is for every artists!"
I don't usually listen to classical music, but Kavakos and this amazing piece by Erich Wolfgang Korngold that I saw on pbs not too long ago has made me particularly interested.
Wow i was just watching this again and I've noticed something: Is it just me or is Kavakos capable of using half the normal amount of bow and somehow be able to create a much larger and resonant sound?
The way I see it, the trifecta of bow speed/length, distance of the bow with respect to the bridge, and pressure applied. So when you're sacrificing bowing length/bowing speed, you have to make up for it by playing closer to the bridge and with greater pressure to produce a greater tone.
But iono, I've felt Kavakos has always had a very sweet tone.
You have made an excellent observation, Kavakos just like Heifetz or Ferras uses a violin technique that is becoming distinct. Can you see how unusual his bowhold is? That is of course not all but his technique is the most natural way to play the violin, therefore he is able to put constantly the entire weight of his arm on the string thus creating a "larger more reasonant sound".
I think this guy is an outstanding violinist who understands music in addition to being a technical beast. This piece I should say is very difficult from an orchestral standpoint. Violinist here gets an A while the Orchestra gets a C+.
holy shit, this was a great performance..Heifetz's is still no.1 but this performance is really 1st rate..he's one of the most important violinists of our generation.
Good performance. His chops are at the top. I had not heard him before, and think he belongs among the elite of our time. Heifetz still the king, but this guy is good. The video was horrible. The constant cutting from shot to shot make me seasick. Who directs these things? How about just letting us watch the performer?
The conductor's name is Hugh Wolff, not Hugo Wolff. I am generally quite tired of people who upload videos, without including all the (correct) information.
just because someone expresses an opinion that favors another violinist, doesn't mean it's not a legitimate opinion. just because you're on a kavakos page doesn't mean this is a shrine to him.. come on. are you hurt when you hear praise for another violinist? kavakos is great, but there are plenty of great artists these days and in the recent past, and let's not forget that.
I have heard this recording of Ulf Hoelscher made sometime in the 1960,s. Great playing, and in some ways equal to that of Heifetz. I believe this recording is no longer commercially available.
I think the tempo is perfect. Its Allegro Assai vivace. If its played too slow (like Hahn) its getting boring. And besides he plays so clean tha t you hear not just some of the notes, but all of them.
Sorry to disagree, but I found his playing far too frenzied. I didn't find the Hahn version at all boring - the fact that she played it more slowly allowed me to see how cleverly Korngold had scored it.
There ya go - we all have different ears and different opinions.
It sounds like Hilary's trying to just play all the notes. Personally, I'd rather not hear that. Are you saying you prefer Hilary's over Heifetz's because he plays it as fast as Kavakos?
wow. That was awesome. It is a great work. This is one of the only concertos I know of where you can be lulled to sleep, made to cry, and propelled out of your seat in the same work!
One of the things that drives me crazy about this piece is that the orchestra can't back up what the soloist plays (I'm looking at you, La Mirada Symphonic!), but this orchestra does a fantastic job. Kavakos's job is amazing - he plays it so briskly and tight, it just works. He probably could get a better tonal quality if he relaxed a bit and dropped his shoulders, though.
I have a great memory of this concerto played by the great Nikolaj Znaider. Kavakos is excellent for this concerto also. I think the Korngold Violin Concerto has its renessaince, for e. Gil Shaham also recorded it, many top violinist perform it nowadays.
Hey man go to practice the Sibelius concerto for next month and stop replying to your funs. There are some spots you have problem. The G string passage and the thirds in the last movemment. Go and practice slowly.
You have to check his right hand, he holds the bow much closer to the way that Elman and Heifetz did instead of Oistrakh and that is something really strange to find nowadays.
The most funny thing is when the concertmaster is playing the solo. He sounds like a student in comparison with Kavakos although he is an amazing violinist.
Excellent performance, my favourite of this concerto (I have this DVD) <3

Wow.
First, I completely agree with calloffthedogs, Kavakos is superb and the orchestra so-so.
This is a lot faster than Hahn's interp, but i enjoyed both greatly. That's what I love about artists; they always surprise you! :]

nicely said, although i could say kavakos's tempo suits the piece much better cause its dancelike music.
