The OPEN act is somewhat better, but still stupid and based one assumptions that are hard to prove. First of all there is of course the thing with downloading things you wouldn't afford normally as you stated. And there's also genre's that benefit from piracy, for example I don't know how many friends I have that download games before buying them simply because there isn't playable demo's out for them that give you a good overview of how the game is.

Yes, like someone else said, ACTA, is yet ANOTHER thing that has all been planned behind closed doors. Ugh! Why can't they just give up already. They simply can't win in the long run!
Yep. There's already another stupid piece of international legislation being proposed too. Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA). Check it out. It pissed me right off.
Its true. I've purchased music from many artists I knew little about until I downloaded some of their music without paying for. Music I never ended up buying after the fact, I never would have purchased in the first place.
Also, sorry about Lamar Smith sponsoring this bill. He's my congressman but I didn't vote for him.
Lamar Smith is one of the most ignorant and anoying people I have ever heard about... and suprise.. he is on of those "God bless America" type of guys. That first line alone hurts like a thousand needles stuck into your eyeball, how can anybody say such a thing and be serious about it >_<
also what the guys says in the article is bullsh*t - he says it costs the ppl thouzands of jobs - they are wrong - u dont need more workers to print more CDs - and there are only so many ppl u can put to work on games and movies.
the money would go to the 1% who own all of it and have the copyrights.
You just pretty much some up my exact feelings about the matter there. Thank you. You're so right about supporting artists. There are many albums on (for example) DFTBA Records that I would love to buy if I could afford them currently. I'm sure I could pirate them but I'd really rather give the token of my appreciation of the artists and their music by supporting them.
@grnlfe01 See, I wouldn't have a problem with you listening to a copied version of my stuff if you couldn't afford it. That's reality. We all need to deal with it.
It's rubbish when people say it's only small artists against these bills. I had a chat with an artist on facebook and he was so glad one of this albums had been ripped of the internet because of copyright he couldn't sell it anymore but he could link people to versions of it that had been put on youtube. Equally he and many other big artists receive great joy from having people cutting clips together to make fan music videos. Its a further example of many, of how wrong they have got it
I could have had your album Home for free. I listened to it for free as I recall. I bought 4 physical copies after hearing it. Just because I can get something for nothing doesn't mean I won't/don't support the creator of the material.
@FesterWerks Thanks a lot for that :-) I love to own stuff I actually like, because I know I'm supporting the person who's making it. I think that's a natural mechanism that needs no enforcement (which copyright is).
The TED talk that was about SOPA and PIPA was pretty informative if you haven't already seen it. The title is "Defend our freedom to share (or why SOPA is a bad idea)"

I've discovered so much stuff through finding it for free.
But the stuff I LOVE, I have gone on to spend money to get the actual copies of things, to go to live performances and so on.
I've never pirated from DFTBA artists, either. I've always bought these albums straight up.
