Once you understand that the craft and technology we have attained comes from aliens than it explains that there are both human reverse engineered craft and alien craft in the skies. IMO we see more government craft than alien.

I have often wondered if governments have threatened to sort of punish the people of earth either by accidental nuclear meltdowns, releasing of viral strains, rises of fascism, etc. This might keep caring extra terrestrials away from us as a planet. Or perhaps we are aligned with extra terrestrials that do not have our best interest at heart.
My favorite piece would be that they (both governments and extra terrestrials) are afraid of us and our development. Sad but maybe true.

The reason why people need an outer worldly intelligence for help - is because our governments lust for money, and when they disclose about the alien life, people will ask questions (LOTS) and they will wonder where taxes gone to, etc etc. So they (governments) need to gradually release the information to where the public already knows, so they will not ask so many questions (like tax money) etc. The more smooth, the better. Governments can not be trusted - none of them.

Even then there is a multitude of different 'alien' species. Some disregard these laws. They have been stopping us from destroying ourselves though, we currently do not have any intercontinental nuclear missile operational at the moment, and they will keep it that way.. we have them, but cannot use them.

There is a very tangible risk that their arrival will be like that of Columbus to the Americas; just smallpox and alcohol alone were devastating, and they weren't even intended.
It's possible that just like the Spanish, the aliens will force us to convert to their religion or philosophy "for our own good"

Carl Sagan may have been an awesome astronomer but he had no experience in studying these exeperiences. He looked at no data, did no interviews and examined none of the evidence...Saying something can't be because of a personal bias is no more scientific than someone believing in unicorns because they have a personal bias that way.

@Darpinion Very much so. He was a huge supporter of the Drake Equation hence why its sometimes wrongly called the "Sagan Equation." Look up the Fermi Paradox, applies directly to us as well as other civilizations. Sagan actually wrote the book "Contact" which was later turned into a movie. Nearly every major scientist of our age has agreed that life exists on other planets. But of course, people seem to think we are the apex of the universe, what a joke.

@echorz I love Sagan but all the indications suggest that he was actively engaged in disinformation when it came to UFOs, abductions, and government coverups. "Cosmos" is one of the greatest shows ever made but, for example his analysis of the Betty & Barney Hill abduction is outrageously sloppy. He clearly had an agenda there.

Carl Sagan was a skeptic and he refused to believe any abduction stories regardless of the incredible similarities between them. I believe he was at some point approached by the government and paid to say that he believes certain things so that others would follow in his foot steps and stay off the trail to the real truth...

Studying life throughout the Universe and on one's own planet is part of scientific inquiry and finding the truth to the beginning of life and the cosmos, or at least paints a clearer picture.
