what about all the other people who were "thriving" here prior to 340 years ago? and isn't it ironic that this is an advertisement for HBC's line of knockoff Cowichan sweaters originating from the aboriginal peoples of Vancouver Island? just a thought...
this is such a romanticized video...the only reason why European settlers survived here is because of Aboriginal people. Also the sweater design at the end is an indigenous Cowichan print... and do you think they got compensated for it? nope!
"we arrived 340 years ago to a land of rock, ice, and snow". Wow HBC you just completely ignored the indigenous peoples of this land, who have been here for thousands of years. But I guess you don't care, because you are that "pioneering" colonialist.
Well if the HBC feels like talking about the HBC, then they'll talk about HBC. It is their commercial and they haven't distorted anything through it. They did get here 340 years ago.
Despite how ugly and racist our past may have been, you have to admit that the Hudson Bay company was part of our beginning, as were the Europeans. They layed the base for the Multicultural and accepting country we are today.
The beginning is rarely beautiful and hardly easy, but it's what you do with it that makes it beautiful. HBC protected the Europeans from the elements so they could make today's Canada beautiful.
The focus of the commercial is on HBC not Canada. The Hudson's Bay company helped bridge relations with European settlers and the native population. The company helped to map out the country and established industry and communities everywhere. The issues that arose between these groups is a result of former Canadian/British government decisions and not the HBC. Both European and native populations benefited through mutual trade in this company and helped to establish Canada as a country.
I am not sure what HBC was thinking when they made this commercial..."we arrived" ??? I can maybe justify this if they are saying "when the HBC arrived", but this advertisement as an afro-carib canadian is very alienating.
Yeah everyone complaining, let me just ask you this - would you rather live in Canada now, or Canada 500 years ago?
And consider things like toilets, showers, indoor heating, refrigerators, shops that sell food and clothing, vaccinations, advanced medical treatment, and fire stations before you answer. Oh and not having to be too worried about being slaughtered by a pack of wolverines.
European settlers did make this nation into what it is - they lay down the infrastructure of progress.
I understand that this song was made for this commercial but I would like to find music similar to this. What genre would i look into? can someone recommend some composers or sites that would help? thanks
i think the song was made JUST for this commerical, which is pretty common...so i don't think there is a full version to it...which sucks...but if anyone does find the name and a full version..can u let me know please :)
This is an original score so I'm pretty sure there's nowhere to get the song. : (

When it says "we" in this ad, I always thought they were talking about the HBC, not Europeans in general.

Oh get over yourself.
If inbred, plague-infected, rat-fucking, incest-lovin', black slave monkey African dick sucking Europeans didn't do it some other nerd would have.

Yeah because heaven knows that before white people came, the land was empty and useless.
If I was a native this commercial would piss me the hell off. Just my opinion.
