Are you using american version, if so, i had an annoying struggle with working it out too. It seems as tho when you go into a battle with it on, switch pokemon TOO the 1 you want to get the super EXP then when the enemy pokemon faints, hold R. (post back if you have any luck, hope it works 4 yu)
