I caught the end of thie movie on the HUB last night, and it was the UK ending. If that's the case then the beginning of the film must have had this opening .
This Stars Wars like scrolling credits are a bonus feature on the US version of this movie: The 25th years of Transformers G1 Movie DVD. ( 1986 US version )
@thirdimpact While I can't speak for the UK version, I have an Australian DVD that does retain the "The year is 2005" narration, which immediately follows this text scroll/voiceover. It also features additional narration at the ending, promising further adventures for The Transformers, and the return of Optimus Prime.
I think that may ahve worked better before the opening credits. I always thought that the title sequence in the American version with the metal arrangement of the Transformers theme was awesome.

But with this intro we don't learn that the events of the movie took place deep in the future of 5 years ago...

@starschwar Optimus does return, but in a zombie-like form. My hat is off to you for noticing the difference. You, sir, are more than meets the eye.
