Disagree. There's less emotional resonance, as far as characters go, if it were Itsuki (who doesn't really have a solid connection with Yuki in Haruhi canon). Kyon fits Kira just fine, especially if you consider his position as series narrator and his (surprisingly high) intelligence level.
