Well, Japan DID have Karakuri back in the 1700s, and this chapter's also known as the "Bakumatsu" chapter. Bakumatsu is the late Edo period, so instead of the entire edo ( 1600s to late 1800s), Wiki says it's from 1853 to 1867.

@MrSquidon Hey now, I'm only here to rescue that one dude. Let's not get crazy. Also if I remember right letting most of the others out and interacting with them just gets you into needless fights.

@MrGeorgeFlorcus Ishikawa Goemon, a folk hero in the same vein as Robin Hood. Due to the folk hero status, not much is truly known about his actual life anymore as there are numerous conflicting stories about his life. Common between them all was his thievery from the wealthy to distribute it to the poor, and his public execution with his son by being boiled alive at the Nazen-ji temple in Kyoto.
@MrGeorgeFlorcus continued from prior. Even the execution at Nanzen-ji is subject, as there are numerous accounts for how and why it happened, most involve some sort of opposition to Hideyoshi. It combined with the other associations of his result in Goemon often being used as something of an anti-authoritarian icon.
