I lived in Tegusigalpa and I wondered how long there would be firewood as the tree line moved further and further from the city. These stoves can made a huge difference and make life so much easier for millions. I knew a man that walked 3 hours a day gathering firewood so his wife could make tortillas to sale.

While I applaud your efforts to help people, the Justa stove design is obviously not very efficient as evidenced by all the smoke pouring out the chimney. That smoke may not harm the family who is cooking, but it is still particulate matter being released into the air as a form of pollution and it still has health and environmental consequences.

Rocket stoves and similar designs re-burn the smoke and gasses so that no chimney is needed, thus protecting both people AND the environment!

There's only smoke at two points in the film. The first is from a house *without* an imrpoved stove. The second is smoke from the chimney of a Justa stove, but just after lighting - this is the only time you get any smoke, once it's going there is little or no smoke.

You mention Rocket stoves - Justa is in fact based on the rocket stove design.

Justa stoves may be based upon the rocket stove design, but both the Prius and the Hummer are based upon the model "T" design, and obviously they have very different efficiencies. Justa stoves are really little more than modified Lorena stoves--they're just adding an insulation chamber around the combustion chamber and filling it with ash.

True rocket stoves produce very little smoke (usually only during the lighting process) and are so efficient and smoke free that a chimney is not needed.

I agree - we've award several Rocket stoves over the years. I think the Justa was still a worthwhile improvement at the time.
