Never buy from walmart. When ever you biy a fish you make room for another one. If you buy a fiah from them they think people want there fish then get even more. Just dont buy cuz your not saving them.theyre always diseased and thwy add more fish to the stock and they die. Its so sad and pathetic.
I have bought fish from Walmart and Petco. Petco looks cleaner, no corpses floating in every tank to be eaten by the others. Maybe one or two every once in a while. However, my goldfish I bought from Walmart live years longer than the ones from Petco which all had parasites and died within 3 months of buying them.
Walmart is so disgusting when it comes to thier fish tanks. Most of the time there is like 5 dead fish at the bottom and i guess they dont feed the fish so the fish eat the dead ones.
Walmart sees this as just another department. They don't treat these as living animals. A general rule is if it is a chain store, DO NOT BUY YOUR FISH THERE! You are encouraging them to keep getting more fish. This includes petsmart. (I have a video on my profile that makes this look like a resort. Not plugging, just saying.) Find a small, local aquarium shop. 2 minutes on google is all it takes.
The really cool thing about buying fish from Walmart is that their 90 day return policy applies to the fish also... So, if your fish dies, go to customer service and ask for your money back. I offered to bring the dead fish back once, but they were too disgusted, and just gave me my money back:)
Once I was at Walmart or some other store, there was a fish with no eye, scales coming off, he was black(he was SUPPOSED to be BROWN), and he was swimming around in circles.
i think the point is to stop buying fish from wal-mart altogether so that you're not supporting their "pets" department so eventually they'll shut it down (the pets department not wal-mart)and they'll stop abusing them. Regardless if your bought a fish from them one time and it just so happened to live a little while...
If I worked at walmart I'd go straight for the fish section and clean and balance their water. I'd probably get fired, but it would drive me nuts working there and seeing that all the time. Probably why they hire slumballs in the first place.
o~O *shudders* that is so disturbing. and your guys' "buying the fish saves its life" yeah...it probably does....but its just keeping them "supply and demand." Its like buying puppies from a puppy mill...*shudders* >,<
I just bought a goldfish from there because every fish was dead in the tank. So, I begged my mom for one and got one. Prob saved its life. Its name it Teety Tucker. :)
what walmart in bumfucked egypt do you go to. No store that i have ever been to looks like that. yeah actually all my fish are from walmart and are VERY healthy. i have 11 and 12 in oscars that i got there when they were like 1 in long. in america we clean our tanks
I work at walmart and work in the pets department and I know alot about fish..the only thing is I am not allowed to do anything but sell fish to customers the zone manager is "suposed to clean tanks daily remove dead fish feed them and treat them for ich or any other diseases but the zone manager has so many other responsibiltys to keep his or her job that caring for the fish often comes last and walmart would never pay somone to just care for the fish. So yea I agree its a sad life for a fish
I got a fish from walmart on my birthday, 2 days later it died from not eating, probaly fin rot too. :'( We had a funeral for him instead of flushing him. RIP ALPHA
that is discusting the poor fish, i went to walmart the other day to buy a fish and there were dead fish everywhere and the two guppies i bought ended up dieing about a week later
i went to the petsmart near my house and found the exact same thing. I have 3 goldies i got there tankfully they are healthy and happy. I asked the guy about ti and the response i got was "we dont care about these goldfish, they are primarily used as food" he almost broke out laughing when i said i keep them as pets cuz "noone keeps goldfish as pets" there was upwards to 60 fish in a 60 gallon tank, 1/3 of which were dead or near death. He said they are used as live food so its not important
@HospitalWaste Ive encountered the exact opposite. When I was little I was with my dad at petsmart and we were getting some cheap feeder goldfish for the pond and the lady didnt want to sell them to us because she thought it would be cruel to put them in a pond. But it makes perfect sense to put them in a tiny 1/4 gallon bowl. Oh well, I buy feeder goldies every now and then for my oscar
@Fx4Ranger2002 yeah the guy said he didnt care about the fish but told me it would be cruel to keep 2 in a 36 gallon tank. because they would "die a painful death" my response was "the difference is in 3 days they wont be floating dead in your stores tank" anyways they are doing great nearly 6 months old and healthy and happy. feels good to have given them a new lease on life instead of being in an overcrowded tank destined to die of disease or neglect or become food.
@HospitalWaste It seems more humane for them to be fish food for the big Oscars and Pacu's, they just get swallowed whole, no pain. The local pet shop I go to is family owned(I try to support my local stores as much as I can) I buy feeder goldies for 13 cents out of a 20 gallon long. They look healthy when I buy them and there are no dead ones in the tank. Small local petshops take care of their fish much better than any franchise such as petsmart or petco. If you want fish with ich go to petco
I WORK AT WALMART . . . NO JOKE BUT THEY HAVE ME TAKE CARE OF THE FISH :d LUCKY FOR MY WALMART I ACTUALLY TAKE CARE OF THE FISH HAHA . . . but the walmart a store down has a bigger aquatics place and that fag over their doesnt clean or feed them :'(
Go to their website and complain. I did that about my local one after having complained to a few workers and they actually got their act together and cleaned it up and trained people to take care of the fish.
Walmarts are usually located in the south and most red necks and hicks do not know how to care for fish. So all of those dead fish in the tank are considered beautiful if your from the south.
my corydora is like an inch, the snail half an inch, the one fry is 1/4, the other is a little smaller then that, and the platy is 1 and a half inch. So is that good then? so if 1 inch per gallon then i have a total of about 3 and a half inches.
My local petsmart is like this, as is my walmart as well. I get my fish from my petco, I know people complain about it, but in my area, the people at petco are people who are actually knowledgeable on the topic of fish(a few of the guys are actually studying to be marine biologists) and the fish I bought there are all super healthy. However, please answer me this. I have a 5 gallon fish tank with 1 adult platy, 2 juvenile platy, a mystery snail, and an albino pygmy corydora. Am i overstocked?
I've only got a oscar at walmart and it was in bad shape but I got it back to heath and its one hell of a monster fish so I guess me getting it saved its life.
@warriorscatsrule805 Whenever you buy a fish from walmart you enable them to simply stock several more. It can be hard, but the best course of action is to simply not buy from them.
what the hell is wrong with walmart people!!?? how would they like it if they were in a tank that was never cleaned and with dead fish in it! and not being fed. this is just cruel . like if you agree!!!
I went in to a walmart near me 6 months ago, and out of 30+ tanks, literally EIGHT TANKS had fish that were NOT dead. 15 tanks had ALL DEAD fish. The rest of the tanks were empty. How fucking pathetic is this company.
No store should sell fish if they think they can give the tanks the least care possible.I know my local petstore has sick and dying fish ALL of the time,so it's not just wal-mart.I've learned that when you're buying fish you have to be really specific with what fish you pick out.I've made a worker put some fish back when I found ich on one of them. They tried to tell me it didn't have ich, even though at least four of their tanks were quarantined with it.I mean, come on...
ppl u retarded dont buy fish 4m wal m. 'cause u feel sad 4 them cause thatll only make them biy more cause theyre in demand and more fish will perish cause u feel bad dont b ignorant
@xwaffleninja So true a few years ago my local walmart was like that but thay were forced to get rid of the fish part of the store cuz thay dident take care of the fish
you should not buy fish from a tank in any shop that a one dead fish in it.
in england we have the rspca animal protection if i see that in any shop i would call them in and they would take the company to court and get them find.
Walmart needs to start taking care of fish, and also cleaning out the dead ones. Sometimes when I see dead fish in the tanks, they are like, hella old, you can tel they are molding and it is just gross.
Are the fish there still treated like this? I live in a country without Walmart but I feel like I need to start a protest or something... They must receive a million complaints a day! At least, I hope they do =/
i bought four goldfish and a fantail goldfish from walmart and they all had swim bladder- i didnt know the signs of it at first but within four days, they all started swimming upside down and doing what looked like gasping for air. all of them have died bacause walmart is a bunch of assholes
walmart needs to stop selling fish or dedicate more time to providing the right care for the fish they sell. their in it for the money. this ticks me off so much and i have seen conditions in other walmart stores just like this.
No, because they will simply buy more to replace them. PLUS, you'd be showing them your support of their horrible underkept fish department by giving them money for their half-sick-and-dying-pets. Although it can be hard not to, the best thing to do is not to buy - it shows stockers that you do not approve as a customer and will take your business elsewhere to where they actually care about their fish.
@Hope4Olives NO, because no matter what you do, no matter what fish medicine you give them they just die anyways..... i have had so many fish die that i got from wal-mart, no matter what i do they would always die. i havent bought any fish from there in years, i wont ever buy any again.
I will never buy fish there. I knew someone who reported some guy dumping a chemical in (not an employee) and all the tanks had dead fish after that. He finally got caught after 4 different occasions that he came in and needlessly destroyed their fish. I will only buy from shops that specialize in fish, or I know the employees and see that the fish are well taken care of and medicated when needed. Some do come in from the distributors sickly.- Thanks for sharing.- GrayBeard
Fuck Walmart. About 4 or 3 years ago I wanted this cute thick fishy I begged and begged my dad for waiting HOURS about 3 hours we waited total waiting for the people then my dad got extremely angry and walked out and I didn't get a fishy! =^= SOME BS!
I remember a bought a number of neon tetras and guppies from a walmart. All the guppies were dead within an hour. I never bought another fish from them ever again. Anyway, the worst part about walmart selling fish is they don't even bother cleaning up the dead fish. they just leave them there.
3 days ago i went to walmart with my mom and i was looking at the bettas and found 2 MALE BETTAS IN THE SAME CUP AND PIECES OF THEIR FINS WERE ALL OVER THE BOTTOM OF THE CUP AND MAKING THE WATER DIRTY!!! i mean does walmart even care about fish that will kill each other every chance they get? i wanted to get one of them so they wouldn't fight anymore but my mom said no because we can't afford it. i garuntee that one of them is dead right now and that walmart did the same thing with 2 other betta
the walmart where i got fish had horriable conditions!!! when i was going to get a black mystery snail i saw that most of them were dead in piles and some of them were sick. i found one and it lasted only 3 days.then when i got some rose feeders they lasted the day after i got them.
I do agree though that they are terrible there here in minnesota every tank is 10-15 gallon and the golfish get a 50gallon and they all have rocks for the bottom and live plants (some fake) in hibbing
i Beg to differ i baught 2 comets 1 goldfish (38cents) and a bunch of other fish they all have lived for more then 3 years some more then 5 some more then 7!
i was at my local walmart and the goldfish were terribly disease ridden and they replaced the fish and the same disease(i dont know which) is showin up again. i feel so bad for fish who are mistreated like those and so many others
@NatashaIllusia in the same tank there was a fish from the neighboring tank in it swimming into the wall, trying to get back to its original tank. since there was no one there i took the net and put the fish back in its original tank
That is unreal....I have been fish keeping for over 15 years and Walmart should be fined and have their certs pulled and shoot the guy responsible for the care of these tanks
I hope you complained and reported this. Fish will sometimes die within pet stores (it's just one of those things), but NOT to this extent. This is cruel.
I would buy live fish from there just to save them

This is why I get my fish at petsmart and petssupermartket..
MineetheUmbreon 1 month ago
Yeah, I've seen that personally as well. It's really disturbing. :/ One time the other fish were even eating a fish's dead body. It was nasty.

Walmart is NOT a pet store. This was a bad idea on their part.
largeaquaticmammal 1 month ago
D: That's so horrible! I think wal-mart needs to focus more on groceries than pet care..:C
Aquadawn1999 1 month ago
I bought some fish at walmart and thankfully they are still living but It took a lot of special care to get them healthy again.

This shows how much walmart really cares about giving people the best for less
ICEtheTIGER 1 month ago
walmart needs to stop selling fish or dedicate more time to providing the right care for the fish they sell. their in it for the money. this ticks me off so much and i have seen conditions in other walmart stores just like this.
lama1202 1 month ago 24
Wait, shouldn't this be a reason TO buy fish there? To save them from this horrible treatment?
Hope4Olives 1 month ago
@Hope4Olives
FlowingDepths 1 month ago
@Hope4Olives NO, because no matter what you do, no matter what fish medicine you give them they just die anyways..... i have had so many fish die that i got from wal-mart, no matter what i do they would always die. i havent bought any fish from there in years, i wont ever buy any again.
VanessaSky25 1 month ago
I will never buy fish there. I knew someone who reported some guy dumping a chemical in (not an employee) and all the tanks had dead fish after that. He finally got caught after 4 different occasions that he came in and needlessly destroyed their fish. I will only buy from shops that specialize in fish, or I know the employees and see that the fish are well taken care of and medicated when needed. Some do come in from the distributors sickly.- Thanks for sharing.- GrayBeard

I remember a bought a number of neon tetras and guppies from a walmart. All the guppies were dead within an hour. I never bought another fish from them ever again. Anyway, the worst part about walmart selling fish is they don't even bother cleaning up the dead fish. they just leave them there.
gravekeeper101 2 months ago
no wonder my goldfish die so easily when i take them home.
FishLover1781 2 months ago
I bought a Shubunkin fish and a fantail goldfish there... they all died within a few weeks. Goldfish are supposed to live a long time...

@mechanicx610 there is no guy that takes care of it as you can see

I hope you complained and reported this. Fish will sometimes die within pet stores (it's just one of those things), but NOT to this extent. This is cruel.
